It is my understanding that Shadowfox intends to make a Game Gear case, that is the same size as his Genesis cases. So I started to work on modifying a Game Gear template to match the Genesis case dimensions. I completed the first cover today. Unfortunately, I don't have any Genesis cases at the moment to test fit a cover. If there is anyone willing to print and test this cover that would be incredibly helpful. I know it is a lot to ask with the cost of home printing. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

I hope he's not making them the size of Genesis boxes. That would take up entirely too much room for a tiny cartridge. They should be the size of Game Gear or DS boxes. If they're the size of Genesis cases, you can axe me off the list of buyers.
-
For some reason, I thought they were going to be the height and width of a Sega case, but the spine would be the same thickness as a DS case. That way, they would be tall enough to hold the manuals, but not take up as much space as a Genesis case.
-
Looking back through the old posts, I think you are right about that. He mentioned using a format similar to the Master System card cases. It looks like these are the same height and width as a Genesis case, but have a smaller spine. They appear to be about half the thickness of a Genesis case.
-
Still, to have such tall boxes for a tiny cartridge isn't logical to me. If the manuals are the issue, he should just make the cases the same size at the original Game Gear retail boxes. That way, the actual process of making covers is easier. The artwork won't have to be skewed.
-
I agree. Boxes the same size as the original would be nice. That was one of the things I tried to fix with the template. By adjusting the black bottom portion , I was able to get it close enough that I could keep original aspect ratio. I think the reason he wants to use the height and width of the Genesis cases, is to have them match on the shelf.
-
+1 for original size. I think the issue is more to do with cost. Cheaper to retool an existing mold, rather than a completely new one.
-
Yes, cost wise it does not make sense to make a completely different mold. For maintaining original aspect ratio the Genesis width and height actually work out. I did not have to adjust outside a locked aspect ratio for the cover above. Just had to adjust the black border at the bottom a little. So, besides the spine, everything should be pretty close to the original for his Game Gear case.
-
The original boxes were much larger than DS cases. Not as big as Genesis cases, if I remember correctly, but not that much smaller. The cartridges are fatter than GB/C/A games, and they'd need enough width to accommodate the manuals, which are tall too.
-
Personally I wouldnt start resizing anything until he gave the final size.
Also I thought he was going with the Master System card case size, so it would accommodate both Master System cards and Game Gear.
Either way I will probably have to do some heavy modding of the cases to make them fit the clear case that normally came with the games.

This is what I had heard from him as well.
I wouldn't resize anything yet as he was hinting at using the SMS Card cases as a guide, nothing was set in stone yet, as far I know.

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I'd comment on this. Shadowfox can correct me if I'm wrong, but I highly doubt he can simply 'retool' his molds. At best he could have different cavities/cores, but that itself cost nearly as much as the whole mold -- not to mention the fact that then you can only run one at a time.

Hi all, I'll chime in here for a second. ;)
The Game Gear cases will be the same height and depth as the Genesis cases however, NOT the same thickness in the spine. Sorry I haven't been able to update everyone one the exact dems. on this new case, and truthfully, I haven't received the final drawings to sign off yet. (But I haven't been pressing them yet)
If you want a really good idea on the draft layout I am using the older SEGA Card game cases as my base. The left side is pretty much complete with this case. :)

Was there a reason for those cases being that big? Even if they are thinner it seems a little big to have GG cases being as big as genesis cases. I was thinking they would be closer to the GBA cases if only a little larger for manuals.
-
But the manuals are a pretty good size. They need to be more than "a little" bigger than Game Boy cases in order to fit. In fact, are the Game Gear manuals any smaller than a Genesis manual? Off the top of my head, I don't think they are.
-
GG manuals are about 1/2" to 3/4" smaller than a Genesis manual.
-
Agree. Prefer to see a DS sized box for handhelds
Thanks

Disagree. You won't be able to fit the manuals.

Agree with Romevi on this

Could go either way. Good arguments for both.
Keep in mind, that if they are made tall enough to hold manuals (probably the same height as UGC), they will most likely not be as wide (probably half as wide). So they probably won't take up as much space as you might think.

SF has said he's aiming for them to be roughly the size of sega card cases. So slimmer spine than retail game gear boxes, but height and depth of sega cases.

Sort of what I was thinking, but that's a better way of describing it. I think my vote would be for this sized case.

I have a couple SEGA card cases that would be alright
The Half height case idea (large enough to hold manuals) makes the "portable" case visually distinctive next to regular cartridge cases

Hmmmm.... that is and interesting take on it. :)

So here is the task at hand! I need to figure out what the larges height Game Gear (And/or Sega Card) booklet is. ;)
Let me play with this idea. 8)
-
So half height but same depth? Are you thinking the cases would look like N-Gage cases then? Those are a pretty cool size and very unique IMO.

I used to work in injection molding, before being laid-off. So I know that the mold design has to be set in stone, because making even minor changes cost time & money.
The best suggestion I can give concerning size of case would be to get access to a GG retail box look at it's dims (the box has to contain the manuals) and go from there.
I have loose games, but I could get a retail box to check out...
Thanks

As I've said before, I feel like Game Gear cases should be about the size of PSP cases but made just big enough to hold the manual and game and be the color purple. If alls I could get was a case to hold just the game then I wouldn't buy cases and just keep them all in a shoebox still. Takes up less room that way.

I have mention this before too. If it isn't possible making them as the original height I prefer them to be as the PSP but big enough to hold manuals
-
I think the cases would look best at the same size as the original cardboard boxes. I have one here and it measures 6 in high x 4 3/8 in wide x 1 inch thick. This way the original oartwork scans wont have to be distorted.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but has anyone ever seen this kind of case for the Game Gear before? http://r.ebay.com/KwZSRf (http://r.ebay.com/KwZSRf)
It's supposedly a clamshell case from Blockbuster back in the day. Here's a pic if the auction ends/gets taken down.

If nothing else, maybe it's food for thought for Shadowfox as he works on his Game Gear case
*Also I vote for a case shaped closer to the original dimensions of Game Gear boxes. That way when the Shadowfox GG cases are next to my original boxed games, they wont look out of place ;D
-
Now that we have a finalized case, I hope we can figure out the dimensions and start working on cover designs. I think that will be the bottleneck here as I'm only seeing 63 covers added to the Game Gear section over the last 8 years! I only have about 8-10 boxes myself as I only collect carts and manuals, so I can only help so much. Does anyone out there know of a good resource for materials to start working on these liner designs?

I fully intend on contributing to this project. I've been planning to make the actual template but I'll wait until I have the cases in hand before starting the project.

I can work on the 2 EU style templates. (Black, and grey grid)
We've got a lot of scans in the boards for the US releases, which I should be able to retool to work in an EU style.
As a side, I already have a template for the US striped style that I worked on a while ago to make replica boxes. Should be convertible once I know exact dimensions. Happy to supply it to Segamer to use as a base if he wants it.

Because of the lack of Game Gear covers here I opted to make my own. I wasn't satisfied with any of the purple options (and I needed covers for a bunch of games which weren't available), so I decided to make my own. It's not a perfect match to the original purple, but I had to tweak it because some of the covers came out too pink or too dull, and my printer at the time wasn't the best, so I saturated the purple and kept it for all of my covers.
Here's an album of the couple of handfuls of covers I did: http://imgur.com/a/trOBs.
Looking through them, they need some updating. I might even change the purple, though they look good on my shelf. I had to search around for the original scans, and didn't really bother cleaning them up. Mind you, this was when I was barely learning Photoshop, so I had to learn all of it on my own. ::)
Some of the scans don't even match regions, and there are some I just couldn't find. I even tried to keep some of the black Game Gear covers, but now I think I'll just make them all the purple style so they match better on my shelf.
