Title: Cover Project 2.0?
Post by: Hexxxer on December 13, 2008, 09:37:18 PM
Just curious if there are still plans to update the cover project, there have been many ideas thrown around by users over the past while that could really improve the quality of this site.

As far as I know, there have been plans to update the site for ages, it's just that nothing can be done since the only person who actually CAN implement these updates is Snowcone, and he seems to be perpetually and indefinitely busy.

I think TCP2.0 has been LONG overdue.

I agree. And I'm surprised I didn't come across this site sooner.

I swear there's a post from at least a year ago with the same focus... It just boils down to Snowcone's time and willingness to use it towards the project. He's been planning it for a while now, but nothing happened.

Hope nobody minds me posting this. I don't think it's strictly confidential.

I really am working on a new site for us, but I am trying to juggle several projects including paid gigs and my day job so it's taking longer than I wanted.

So yes, it's true that I am brutally busy. I juggle a full time day job, freelance jobs that help pay the bills, my main site (Snackbar Games), 2 blogs, and TCP. Granted my priorities are not in that order, that is what I am juggling pretty much around the clock.

That said, I am attempting to move TCP over to be run on the CakePHP framework. I've not used it in the past and I am hoping that it'll cut development time of changes/upgrades for TCP in the future. That said, I'm awfully close to scrapping that idea and just getting a new site up that addresses all of the issues that have come up over the last 2-3 years.

So yes, while I am WAY behind on my initial desire to relaunch, I've got things well underway and I'll be soliciting beta testers as soon as things are ready. Hang with me as I try to get tools in the hands of people that admin the site as a priority.

Seeing as this last post was at least 9 months ago, why don't you choose something like Drupal - that would quite easily fit all of this site's needs. The only thing you would have to do is set up the Console/Handheld pages, implement a stylesheet and you're all set to go.

Not only a year old thread, but a thread that reminds everyone that the revision to this site is WAY overdue.

I kind of like it the way it is....

A little like an episode of "days of our lives"....you can go to Siberia for a couple of years and return to the story just where you left off :)

Don't give Snowcone too much of a hard time, he's a busy man. And this gig is unpaid. We all have things that
we haven't yet got around to doing.

I like how Lish had a 2 year absence (basically) and comes back to the same old discussions. :) *
*Note: Lish is still busy, but it's great to see him post again.

I don't have any work done on a new layout still, but I went ahead and started rebuilding the site to use custom themes so when the new layout is done it's a cinch to change over. Part of the new update will be a whole new url structure. No more of this /view.php?cover_id=## business. /nintendo_64/mario_kart_64/ is where it's at now.

You can see a preview of what I am doing here: [secret url, kept secret by Doom for some reason] Note: Link is now broken

Keep in mind that this is a work in progress so any errors are assumed to be due to me working on the site. Feel free to take it for a spin at any time though.

Let's keep this url private for now, but you can watch live progress as I am finishing pieces of the new site layout.

The links are funny. I had a v2 in progress and scrapped it. Had a v3 the next year going on the CakePHP framework. I hated the layout and scrapped it. I currently have a v4 in development with a layout I love. I just need some time to add features (ratings, comments, etc) and finish rewriting the code. At that point I'll open it up to beta testing at a temporary url.

I'd show you a preview, but that would just be cruel.

It would be cruel!  :P but it's nice to know some of the features you had in mind for 2.0!

Hey, I don't know if this is a common problem with people but I am from the UK and want to print PAL covers.
There is a lot less PAL covers than there is the American Version.
Is there a way to search for PAL covers only?
If not I think this would be a really handy feature and would save a lot of time and effort.

Nothing here to see...

For real though, you are right that our site search is very poor. I'll see what I can do to rectify that.

Sorry for my bad spelling...
i would love to have a better Raw scan archive.
hard to find scnas, but when i found searching, i need to send PM to the person to get the scan.

Isnt it better to get a upload for those?
I know there is few, but 2010/2011 is the latest one.

The raw section's upload is closed.
We can download from there, but we can't upload or delete from there.
Most people upload to Mediafire or Box and link to the boards.

Some only provide the scans if requested.
There is reason for that and I understand the reasoning.
Not gonna say reason here, so people don't get wrong ideas.

A "like" button on posts would be great. It's a nice way to give recognition to folks that make quality posts without replying.

I hate to say it, but that just sounds to Facebook to me. And that is a place I try to avoid anymore.
If that were to happen, it better have a dislike button too because I don't want to be in a "Thanks for positive reinforcement, but if you disagree or don't like what I have/do, then you're an asshole peice of shit." Type of environment, which again, is what Facebook and other social media sites are all about anymore.
