Title: PSP Cover Thread

For Normal PSP games, Greatest Hits, Demos and UMD Movies

I thought i might make a little more in depth and customizable PSP Template.
All text is customizable (including logos) and i will start with the back soon.
(FYI - this thread is not a DVD cover thread but there is not a "other covers" area for me to post this)
Keep in mind that it is a Work In Progress.

My Original intention was to make covers for my PSP Demos.
I didn't want them to look just like my normal full PSP games.
(i have more demos than actual games so i thought that would look very weird)
I also needed to make some UMD Movie covers (like that packed in Spiderman 2 :P)

This uses the same size text and font as the Greatest Hits does on the front extended top banner.
I chose blue because its simple, it stands out and i think its kind of playstation's color.

I am aware that UMD movies don't have the "game controller" at the bottom of the spine, its just there for the preview.

Sorry i don't have any covers made yet to fully preview the template. The simple gray background is just to give you an idea for right now untill i start cranking out some demo covers.

Ehh ... you could always just use them as guidelines ;) . Just to make sure everything is all lined up

My whole intention when making my templates is to make them so customizable that you don't need a cover scan.
Just replace the a few lines of text, the barcode, and add some art. It just makes it a little bit easier when making custom covers when the original cover can't be found (or never exsisted).

Also, if you're compiling a list, there's also that Madden Bundle coming out sometime this August. The UMD video is going to be a video called "In Just One Play" and of course "Madden 2009" -- it's a shame this nice colour is tarnished by such horrible software. I don't have a PSP yet as I'm waiting for that specific bundle, but I do have a few games for PSP already. I'm more excited about the Beats voucher than the game/movie.

The game was bundled in with my PSP, therefore lacking an actual cover, and the inlays on psp games are always a nice touch.

well ... sure :) . If you want me to i can implement it into my PS1 template.
I did not make the PS2 template so i wouldn't feel right about adding the option.

My PS1 template has a few basic PS2 layers in it that could be used for PS2 covers.
So you could just use my PS1 template for PS2 demos if you would like.

My goal is to have the modified PS1 template up by Sunday Night.
i'll post the news and have preview images when it is complete in my "PS1 Cover Thread".

Please no new descriptor!!!! We try to keep the descriptors to a minimum....

I personally would think number 2 is the best BUT still post it in the same place as the normal game... Keep everything as for the retail cover except the (Demo) part in the visible name and the right number in the filename(in this case _2)....

They aren't that good, I've been meaning to redo them for a while. But yes, 2 is good. I think that maybe they should be seperate from the retail cover.

i didn't delete it.

I did notice that it was pretty gainy and had some rough spots.
I'm assuming you cut and pasted from the DVD cover version.
That points to the illegible legal text on the bottom & the company logos are low rez.

Did you upscale the cover image from a lower DPI to 300 DPI? It kind of looks that way in some areas

I personally have used it and have it printed off, its a good cover :)

No American boxart has been revealed yet, only the Japanese and it's... not that great. So this is my version using a render I think reflects the game better, due to the amount of sex appeal present in it. There's no back as there's not much known of the game still, but if people like it I'll gladly connect it with the official US boxart when it comes out. But hopefully the boxart we do get is better.

So I made this real quick earlier, and I only take credit for the editing. The template and other images I used Google to find.

Anyway, it's not perfect, but I had to do something about that red border. Maybe somebody else will get some use out of it. Don't have the program to make the fancy cases, so you get a nice flat image instead.

..... every topic is kind of like that to an extent. People always make requests in cover forums even though they aren't supposed to. We already have a PSP Cover thread that is meant for finished cover so i'm going to merge the two threads.

You've probably already found this one, but Mel made a PAL version for me a while back using Sheep's scan. I've been using this even though mine is the US version.

I noticed the Phantasy Star Portable Covers are super hard to get.
So I found some scans and samples, pieced them together, and made some other minor improvements.

Also, there have been a lot of scans for Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron but they're all really rough looking.
I've touched it up quite a bit, removed scratches, smudges, etc.

Post by: Jl3legend on April 04, 2019, 05:58:45 PM: I rescanned some of my covers into a higher quality, and I've also added several new scans to the folder. Some of the sides show a bit of wear, but are otherwise good scans.

I have a huge PSP lot on the way so if/when it gets here, i'll have a large scan addition. It's about 50/50 that USPS "lost" it in the mail. It has read "in Transit" for 5 days now with an expected delivery of tomorrow. A shame too, the lot is a huge steal for the price. I cringe when I see people ship via USPS.

The front and spine have been reconstructed as they were pretty easy but the back is just using the best image I could find online. It's been cleaned up a bit but is still pretty blurry. But, it will do for now and should print out ok.

The cover is Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes. It was requested by EdoTensei. I saw his request in a forum post two months ago when he first signed up. I got a personal message from him asking if I could help him by making the whole Naruto PSP trilogy. I'm so happy he discovered me and chose me to help him. After I finished the Game Boy Color cover WCW Mayhem for Thugsta4Life, I jumped in to help EdoTensei by making the PSP cover for the first Naruto game.

When I started making my first PSP cover, I made a blank sample template with The Cover Project's official PSP UMD case dimensions. The dimensions are 2465 pixels wide x 1980 pixels high. The spine width is 165 pixels. I don't know who came up with these dimensions. Those dimensions are much smaller than the original PSP covers. I made three more sample templates in different sizes. I even measured the original cover to see how tall and wide it is. When I printed the 4th blank sample template, I found the right size at 2478 pixels wide x 1989 pixels high. My spine is 164 pixels wide. 164 pixels is a more proper fit for the spine width. You won't see any of the spine when you look at the front or back directly when the cover is in the case. When I lined up the original cover with the 4th blank sample template, I noticed the template is a hairline bigger. It's supposed to be that way because when you trim off the edges, the cover will be the same size as the original cover. I will be adding more of the different style bars and spines to my PSP UMD case template when I buy more complete in box PSP games for scanning purposes.

I'm now starting to work on the sequel. It will be up soon. Want to know how many Naruto games the PlayStation Portable has? Six. It's a lot of work, but, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Happy gaming!

Post by: rockabilly1983 on September 11, 2023, 05:11:08 PM: Hi, everyone! I'm back again with the sequel Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2: The Phantom Fortress. I had to put this cover on hold for awhile because the first copy I bought had a small area on the front that was wrinkly on Naruto's face. It was too difficult to fix the blemish with all the shadows that appeared on the first scan. Once I received another complete copy of the sequel, it looked like a better print. I had to be very careful to line up the spine perfectly with the font because the front artwork goes onto the spine. The back took a lot more work with the English and French headliners having a gradient and an outer glow. I had to play around with the controls until I got the gradients and outer glows right. The screenshot subtitles also had outer glows. Removing the scanned text in the upper area was pretty challenging.

You may have noticed that I updated my first Naruto cover above. A comma was missing on the last sentence on the cautionary text on the back. I added a comma so the last sentence now has the proper grammar. I also fixed "Game Sharing" by adding a space between the two words. I meant to do this before uploading and approving my Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes cover to the main site last month. The updated cover is now on the main site. I bought two more of the PSP Naruto games for scanning purposes. They are coming soon. EdoTensei will be pleased once he downloads this cover. I feel good helping a Naruto fan here on The Cover Project. Until the next time, take care!

That's a good question. I always do all kinds of replacements because I want the covers to look nice. I care about the quality. I don't cut corners or do half of a job. Taking a scan and just cleaning it is not enough. After the scan is all cleaned up, I apply Auto Levels to the image. This particular control finds the black and white in the image automatically to make the colors pop. This way, the colors don't look washed out. When you scan something, the colors will always look washed out. That's the nature of scanners. After that, I brighten up the image together with a little contrast to get deeper blacks and whiter whites. I never replace the screenshots. I clean and keep the original screenshots intact. I only redraw solid screenshot borders. Retyping the text not only makes the text sharp and crisp, it also allows me to fix any spelling or grammar mistakes I find. I can't tell you how many spelling and grammar mistakes I found in the 10 years I have been making covers. It's also important to retype small text so it's readable. Small text is usually the legal text. The more advanced work I do is manually tracing logos and making them into solid vectors with Vector Magic. I could go on and on with what I do, but that would take me all day.

While I was working on these covers, I added two more bars and spines to my PSP UMD Case template. Why couldn't Sony use the same solid black bar for all their PSP games? Sony started out with a solid black bar on their early PSP games. Then they went with a gradient bar on their later PSP games. This blows my mind. I discovered by accident that there are two versions of the name "PlayStation". The only difference I found between the two versions was the style of the lowercase "a". I made both versions of the name "PlayStation" into vectors. I'm so happy with what I have done so far. I made four Naruto covers. Now there are two left to make. I bought the 5th game five days ago and I'm waiting for it to arrive. Now I need to buy the 6th and final game. I'm determined to finish this trilogy!
