Title: File Storage and Sharing
Post by: Doom on June 28, 2008, 06:38:49 PM
I'm working on a MEGA FAQ and this will be part of it. No sticky because it's not that big of a guide. Still, I'm not going to sit on finished content.
I wanted to give some info on it because I see people using less than desirable (to me) web sites to share files on TCP. I dislike MegaUpload and HATE RapidShare. Be aware that every single one of these sites reserve the right to delete your files, and some guarantee they will after a certain amount of time has passed.

What to use depends on the type and size of the file you want to share.

Pictures that can be compressed
Compressed means shrunk down to reduce file size, which usually results in a loss of quality. Files that can be compressed include IMANDIX previews, digital pictures (most of the time the pictures are large enough to keep clarity), but absolutely definitely not include final covers. The loss in quality is something that The Cover Project does not accept. If you want to show a smaller version for a preview, upload that at one of these sites and include a link to the full quality The Cover Project upload.

In most cases, you must register to upload pictures.

Those are just three. These types of sites are plentiful, but be careful, some pictures may be deleted after a certain period of time has passed, especially if you didn't have to register to upload pictures.

Files that cannot be compressed
These files include templates, final covers, raw cover scans, and other files you might want to upload for whatever reason where a loss in quality is unacceptable or impossible because of the file type.
http://lifehacker.com/388284/best-online-file-sharing-services - Lifehacker's list of five file sharing sites. Most of these sites will delete your files after a certain amount of time, so it's best for files that only need to be shared a few times right after you upload them. One of the sites recommended there is
http://box.net/ - best for smaller files. 10 MB per file upload limit, 1 GB total limit for free accounts.
http://www.thecoverproject.net/upload.php - Only for raw cover scans and final, completed covers.
http://www.mediafire.com/ - 100MB per file.
http://www.filedropper.com/ - Rumors of deleted files for paid users... Impressive(5GB) upload limit anyways. Their buisness model is a little screwy too. They gave away a bunch of free paid accounts until 2038. (I got one!) Unless they get ads or have way more paying customers than it looks like, they're going under at some point.

More sites in case you don't want the ones I gave you:

Bigger file sizes are a bigger problem. Sometimes if you can't find a good host for your file size, just split the file into smaller files with a program like WinRar.

I am interested in hosting files for particular projects.
I have printed over 20 covers from this project thus far and so far I am only half finished with one cover so I would like to repay.  Any projects that need hosting for templates, covers, temporary files, etc...  send me a PM and I will see if I can help.  I ask for nothing but to participate.
