Title: BitBox N64 Cover Art Bounty Board
Post by: StoneAgeGamer on October 14, 2014, 02:45:45 PM
Our BitBox N64 Game Cases are ordered. Like our SNES game cases we would like to offer cover art printing for our customers. We need help converting the N64 cover art from UGC specifications to BitBox N64 case specifications.

We want to get the cover art conversion done as quickly as possible. To help this we are offering a $1.50 $3.00 store credit bounty for every conversion. For example, that would be $150.00 $300.00 in store credit for 100 conversions. Or in merchandise terms that’s an EverDrive-N8 Deluxe Edition.

We can only offer the bounty the cover art that has not been completed, so first come, first serve. We are willing to pay a bounty on both 1 horizontal and 1 vertical per game. Of course there may be some exceptions in the case of games that may have alternate versions. Are main target is North American art to start.

FAQs -

Q. Will the art converted be publically available to download for free?
A. Yes. The art will be made available free on our DropBox.com account and we also have no issue with it being distributed on TCP or any other site.

Q. I don’t want store credit, can I just get $1.50 $3.00 cash instead?
A. No. If you are absolutely against store credit, we may be able to offer a cash alternative, but it will be significantly less than the store credit option. At least 50% less.

Q. How can I trust you?
A. The retro gaming community is pretty close nit, scamming people wouldn't be good for business. If you are concerned I am sure Shenske, TyranicalFascist and others would be happy to answer questions about his experience with us.

When are the cases going to be made, I might be able to help with a template, I'm working on a updated UGC/CGC template.

We hope by the end of the year, maybe January. They are engineered already and they are going to be prototyping soon. The insert is exactly the same as SNES/SFC case so you can use that for template.

I've been toying around with the Horizontal template.
Here is the size of actual N64 boxes and UGCs (Faded bottom layer) in the cover size:
Here is it stretched to fit, I think it requires to much stretching to make it fit, the front art looks off, it will be worse with other covers:
Messing around with different bars:
I would like to see how these look in cases. If we go with a boarder, I think the larger green one would work best.

A few more claims
Horizontal:
Paper Mario
Super Mash Bros
Star Fox 64
Conkers BFD
Donkey Kong 64
Wave Race 64

Here is a Vertical template. Based on the existing UGC one and the SNES template. I updated many of the logos.
I also made 3 covers, mostly from scratch. SM64 was based on my better scans, and the other two used the PAL covers for the front. They show more of the right side. I made them very close to retail on the back and spine, using mostly the same art.
Download the template and covers HERE (https://app.box.com/s/lqj8hebsac5ec6jb6x8j)
I'll work on the other one after we reach an agreement on the format (See past post)

I finally received prototype. So far so good, everything seems to fit well. I will soon be updating this post so we can start the bounty board similar to the SNES. I will try to get it up before the end of the year. Template looks good, I will print off some art and try it out.

I'm still working that out. The cases are wider than N64 boxes and UGS, so stretching the art distorts it to much.

Since the ratios are so off like the NES cases, wonder if we should consider a bar on the sides or not to prevent any stretching?

And like I said earlier, I wouldn't mind some advice for the vertical covers. I think I've got an idea of how to do the spines and the retouching on the front art but I would like to be sure so that we have as much consistency as possible.

Hey guys to give this project a little kick in the butt I am upping bounty to $2/ea., but ONLY for the first 100 I receive. I know one or two of you already have some done so those would count. I am going to start working on the N64 selection software for the site. I hope to have the N64 cases listed no later than the end of May.

I get out of school on Thursday, I'll get the templates done then. I'm still trying to figure out a effective way to make the spines as well, I'll elaborate with pictures later in the week. I got a 5 page essay to write due Wednesday and some stories to read for Tuesday.

I'm toying with ether having just a green filler part, or each spine will have to have the spine recreated so the Logo is visible.

@SAG, Can I get a shot of a couple N64 cases on a shelf?

The green dead zones between the visible spine and front, where the Logo can't bee.

I converted some of my Vertical covers.

Batch 2:
Harvest Moon 64
Knife Edge Nose Gunner
The Legend Of Zelda: OOT (Gold BG and Collectors Edition versions)
Yoshi Story
Shadow Man
War Gods

Batch 1:
Mario Kart 64
Paper Mario
Super Mario 64

Calling:
Banjo Kazzoie and Tooie
007 Goldeneye
Conkers BFD
DK64
Mario Party 1-2-3

I need to convert some of these to UGC, I fixed up or remade most of them.

@SAG - if you can show me with a few of my covers, I want to see where the no see zone is.

On Sega Nomadman's covers where he just stretched the spine, parts are not viable. 'The Legend Of' and 'Ocarina Of Time' on his OOT cover, and 'Makers' on his Mischief Makers cover are in the dead zone. Also just stretching the spine looks bad.

The spines are best if recreated, by cutting out the logo, centering it and green-ing the BG. The SNES games did not have this problem because the spine is just black.
This is time consuming, so I'm fooling around with adding a green border, but that may look bad. I want to see how they look lined up to see how much of the dead zone is visible.

The spines are the most important part of the cover in a way, it's what you are going to see the most.

Okay, but that zone is actually shown here:

The N64 Bit boxes are the exact same as the SNES. The only difference is the cart area on the inside. I will see if my manager can print some off and put them on a shelf.

There are blue guidelines on the Photoshop template. The area is basically were the White N64 box is.

Title: Re: BitBox N64 Cover Art Bounty Board
Post by: larryinc64 on June 12, 2015, 02:54:08 AM
all your spines are badly stretched, I'd say remake them or at least scale them up so they maintain their dimensions. Holding shift in Photoshop lets you scale up with keeping the same dimensions. The logo, if posable, should still be kept in that middle range but it does not seem to be a problem if it is not.

I'll get work done on my load soon, I have been swamped with work at my job and I have had little down time.

I remember we never decided on what method to do for the horizontal/retail covers. So lets do that.

1: (My favorite) Green extends on to front.

2. Top bars with images.

3. Solid color bars on top
(http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp280/larryinc64/Bars1_zps0ee38793.png)

4. Just stretch it (Looks bad IMO, it gets stretched too much.)

Is there a master game list yet? I'm going to just spend the rest of tonight plowing out verticals, starting at Z going up.

I was toying around with making the red bar thinner but it makes things complicated and will make converting covers take longer.

They will be in here:

Hey Everyone!

I've taken a crack at a horizontal template because we haven't seen one released yet.  This is slightly different from Larry's Horizontal template but has many of the same elements.  The biggest difference is the spine lays over the red information panel.  The other change is this template has been converted to CMYK, since after all these are designed for print.  When you open the template you may think the colors are off, but that's not really the case.  When you export them back to Jpeg, they'll look just fine.

I'll leave the Photoshop template up here for anyone to play with...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/omhinw7s7fj758i/BitBox%20N64%20Horizontal%20-%20DevTech.psd?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/omhinw7s7fj758i/BitBox%20N64%20Horizontal%20-%20DevTech.psd?dl=0)

For those looking to see what the template looks like without Photoshop, here's a Jpeg.

StoneAgeGamer- Please review this template.  Approve or disapprove it, let's just keep the ball rolling.  I'm just really interested in getting my N64 collection printed.

Also I want to state I have raised the bounty to $3.00 (store credit) per cover art. I will most likely be dropping this after the first 100 art are received. Anyone who has already contributed will get credit at the $3.00 level. If I can get 75 - 100 game art done I will get them listed on the site. I will be updating the the spreadsheet shortly with art already made.

We plan on ordering some GB cases for sale next month when we order more SNES. The main reason they were never listed is because we only ordered 1000 to get Deluxe Edition on site, this wasn't enough to list them otherwise they would have sold out quickly. Luckily when it comes to the GB cases most art can just be up-scaled slightly and fit pretty well. So I am hoping to can at least get most of that art done myself..

Larry is the Vertical template I have posted there finalized? I have it marked as temporary, did you make more changes since that template?

Both templates have the basic design down, the red stripe and such and basic Seals.

The only thing to add to both of them would probably be more icons or something, I think the horizontal one is missing most of the front icons (Players, Rumble Pak Ect). The Vertical one is mostly complete, I might clean up the layers and such but I don't think anything needs to be added to it or modified.

I'll overlook them to double check.

The horizontal template seems to have a bunch of extraneous layers and a SNES template.

Would it be cool to request a few covers in addition? It would be awesome to see some covers done for these quality titles:

Diddy Kong Racing
Gauntlet Legends
Turok 1 & 2

imho it looks pretty good Sega, did you resize the title to make it stand out more on the spine? I really like haveing that nice and big and easy to see.

Ya, originally I had stretched the title but that distorted some of them. Once I get official approval I'll go ahead and do this with the other ones I've submitted.

Probably not because you are using full spine.  You can see in this image:

The usable spine is a portion of the actual spine.

Looks good, though the green color is a bit off. I included (I think) a gradient map color guide for the spine in the template, here it is again.

Also you should add a drop shadow.

I use Gimp so I'm not quite sure how to use this gradient. Can you explain?

Guys (and ladies) please respond within 3 days of this post if you still want to do the cover art you signed-up for. If not I will be removing everyone who doesn't respond. We are going to be listing the N64 cases for sale on site, even though we barely have any art. We are going to make cover art production open to our customers and FB/Twitter followers as well. So I want to purge the list of any that signed-up, but do not have the time or do not want to do them anymore. We have been sitting on these cases forever now, we feel that maybe opening cover art up to more people and selling them will move cover art production along.

I may whip up a Generic Cover, but I'm too busy with school, work and my YouTube channels for at least a month to do much else. Maybe I can help with "quality control" on the Facebook Covers.

How much have I accumulated of store credit from SNES to N64? I should use some of it . . .

Buying boxes for games that lack the cover is always helpful.
Just ask before you buy in case someone has it though.

Just an update,

I currently have 63/297 covers done in Horizontal and most vertical (Still working through batch 5)
(Ha, 63, so close)

I'm cleaning up all the art, and making sure all have green spines the same shade. Also some games did not have Verticals made, so I'm making covers for them.
Do any N64 games have no covers?

I'm sending them to StoneAgeGamer in bathes of 10 games (both H and V), so all the ones made are not uploaded yet, but will be soon.

I'm working mostly alphabetical, though I'll be going through the requests, and the covers I need, in the next few batches.

Star Wars: Episode I Racer (in Next Batch)
Diddy Kong Racing (in next batch)
Gauntlet Legends
Turok 1
Turok 2
Pilotwings 64

I'm also going to be converting all Horizontals to the Shadowfox cases soon too, UGC size and Verticals someone else can do, I can only go through 300 covers so many times :P (Though any new Vertical covers I make will be in UGC as well)

Just wondering about something. On the Stone Age Gamer site, the horizontal covers have a yellow bit showing the N64 console on either end. Whats the reasoning behind that?

Thanks a lot.

It's to avoid stretching the art to much, BitBoxes are wider than N64 boxes.

Hey guys, I made a few that I didn't see in your collection (or perhaps overlooked?).

Still new to this, so I'm open to constructive criticism and suggestions.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

Starfox 64

I'm also working on one for the Starfox 64 import
Title: Re: BitBox N64 Cover Art Bounty Board

I did do Star Fox 64.

The logo on Shadows and Star Fox is too big, and Rouge has no green background. Part of the old 'Only For' logo is still showing under the new one on all 3.

I'm working with Stone Age Gamer on doing the entire US N64 library in both styles, and cleaning up any covers that need it, Though I did random covers at the start I'm working form A-Z from here on, and I'm currently on M, though if there is any requests I can bump them up. The completed covers should be hosted on Stone Age Gamer's site (Minus the batch I'm currently working on.).

Thanks for the help bur I got the N64 games covered (No pun intended)

I didn't realize you'd done Star Fox. I didn't see it in your uploads link on your signature.

I left the green background off of Rogue because quite honestly I just don't know how to do it. Is there a way to put a background and then put a transparent green layer over that, or is it another method (using Paint.net)?

Title: Re: BitBox N64 Cover Art Bounty Board
Post by: larryinc64 on August 13, 2016, 05:12:36 PM
I don't upload the BitBox covers to my Box/Mediafire. All my covers are hosted by Stone Age Gamer:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fyw48l6opdv0een/AAAUBh_ZpMcGY1Ht2RnCj9Qva?dl=0
(though they don't seem to have uploaded the last 2 batches yet (10 games per batch, both Vertical and Horizontal), Star Fox 64 was in one of them. If you need the cover I can upload it)

I use a gradient map for making the green BGs with a constant shade of green to make sure no green spine stands out and is off tint. I don't know if Paint.net can do that. I use Photoshop CS3.

Do you have any requests? I'm going alphabetically, but I can bump up later covers to the next batch.

I appreciate you asking but no I don't want to throw a wrench in the machine! Sounds like you've got a system going so it's cool, I can wait.

I enjoy doing these so I appreciate the feedback and advice. I'll look into switching to Photoshop. I went with Paint.net because it's free and until now it was fine for the job.

Just checking in to see if this is an ongoing project? I think I've downloaded an printed every cover that's available. Did you get all of the letter "H" done? I did not seem to see Hot Wheels Turbo Racing.

Hey Larry - unfortunately, it still seems that Stone Age Gamer hasn't uploaded your batches that included StarFox 64.  Jet Force Gemini is also a Pre-M title I need an insert for that doesn't have a file posted there yet.

On the requests side, Sin & Punishment didn't get a US release, but it is a popular import title.

Thank you for your excellent work on all of the N64 covers so far!
