Title: BitBox SNES Cover Art Bounty Board
Post by: StoneAgeGamer on July 06, 2014, 11:19:04 AM
Our BitBox SNES / SFC Game Cases are have arrived. Like our NES game cases we would like to offer cover art printing for our customers. We need help converting the SNES cover art from UGC specifications to BitBox SNES / SFC case specifications.

Shenske did all of our NES cover art conversion. I doubt he wants that burden himself this time around. Plus we would like to get the cover art conversion done as quickly as possible. To help this we are offering a $1.50 store credit bounty for every conversion. For example, that would be $150.00 in store credit for 100 conversions. Or in merchandise terms that’s an EverDrive-N8 Deluxe Edition.

We can only offer the bounty the cover art that has not been completed, so first come, first serve. We are willing to pay a bounty on both 1 horizontal and 1 vertical per game. Of course there may be some exceptions in the case of games that may have alternate versions. Are main target is North American art to start.

FAQs -

Q. Will the art converted be publically available to download for free?
A. Yes. The art will be made available free on our DropBox.com account and we also have no issue with it being distributed on TCP or any other site.

Q. I don’t want store credit, can I just get $1.50 cash instead?
A. No. If you are absolutely against store credit, we may be able to offer a cash alternative, but it will be significantly less than the store credit option. At least 50% less.

Q. How can I trust you?
A. The retro gaming community is pretty close nit, scamming people wouldn’t be good for business. If you are concerned I am sure Shenske would be happy to answer questions about his experience with us.

Q. How much money will you make off these prints?
A. Directly we do not make any money. We only charge the customer for the cost of paper, ink, and labor. Stone Age Gamer LLC is not just 1 person, we employ both salaried, hourly and contract employees. Our hourly employees are paid well above minimum wage. We also donate a percentage of our cover art sales back into this site. We have already donated hundreds of dollars to this site. Indirectly we do make money from the prints. Obviously offering printing increases BitBox sales and also having cover art available for customers to print themselves also increases sales. If you do not feel comfortable about us making money directly or indirectly off the availability of this art work that is fine, this project is obviously completely voluntary.

Quick vertical conversion -

STEP 1:
This is the current template I have done so far.

STEP 2:
Cut out logo from either vertical or horizontal for spine.

STEP 2a:
Paste logo in center of spine area. A resize maybe required to fit in usable spine area.

STEP 3:
Cut out back of vertical back.

STEP 3a:
Paste vertical back to center of BitBox back.

STEP 4:
Cut out front art from horizontal, if available. May nee dot use up-scaled vertical front art if horizontal is not available.

STEP 4a:
Rotate and paste into correct layer of template. Some resize may be required. Also in the case of art with stuff that pops out will obviously require additional editing.

STEP 5:
Enabled company logos and ESRB where necessary.

StoneageGamer is trustworthy and this is a good deal to you cover makers out there.

As suggested, it would be best if we had a "dibs" program to determine which covers each person is working on. I will start things off by calling dibs on all my vertical covers. I still have all the PSDs for each one so it should make for a quicker conversion.

Count me in for helping with converting verticals. Sounds like a good deal and I'm more than happy to help (and I have plenty of time to work on these). If I can use your template I could start with all the #, and A - H's that have verticals up on the site, except the one's Shenske is doing. In addition, I'd like to claim Mario's Time Machine, Mario is Missing, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Fighting Edition, and the Super Star Wars Trilogy.

So I'll start with:

7th Saga
Act Raiser
Act Raiser 2
Addams Family Values
Adventures of Kid Kleets
Adventures of Batman & Robin
Aero Fighters
Aladdin
Alien 3
Alien vs Predator
Arkanoid Doh It Again
Axelay
Barkley Shut Up and Jam
Batman Returns
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Beavis & Butthead
Big Sky Trooper
Bio Metal
Blackthorne
Brandish
Break Thru
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire 2
Brunswick World Tournament of Champions
Captain America and the Avengers
Captain Commando
Castlevania Dracula X
Choplifter III
Cliffhanger
Congo's Caper
Contra III
Cybernator
Darius Twin
Death and Return of Superman
Demolition Man
Demon's Crest
Desert Strike
Doom
Doomsday Warrior
Double Dragon V The Shadow Falls
Dragon View
Dungeon Master
Earthbound
Earth Defense Force
Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim 2
Equinox
Eye of the Beholder
Family Feud
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Final Fight
Final Fight 2
Final Fight 3
Firemen
First Samurai
Flashback
Great Circus Mystery
Hagane
Harvest Moon
Hook

Mario is Missing
Mario's Time Machine

I have uploaded spread sheet here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aqbad5j2xz5gger/AADpFm7EeX7KNDxCMfPPWKQua/SNES%20Games%20List.xlsx

I marked you guys down for the verticals you listed here.

RED = This person called dibs on this art
YELLOW = Art was completed
GREEN = Store credit payment was sent to contributor (more for me own tracking)

I will try to get templates and stuff up this week.

I will update main thread here as well. I will try to get information up. We should be getting cases in any day. I can send contributors a couple sample cases if that will help. Just PM your address.

Awesome, sounds great! And yes, I could use a sample case if possible, to make sure I make them correctly.

So I ran into a problem. I originally loaded Shenske's PSD file into PaintShop Pro and was manipulating it there and saved it as a PSP file. Apparently PSP can not save groups into PSD. So basically I have to ungroup everything to get it to save with layers. I can do this, but it would probably be better if we used this file to edito the original PSD in PhotoShop to make it a PSD. I would rather the template be in PSD rather than PSP because obviously PhotoShop is way more popular.

Here is PSD: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rqex2cgv7k91kcf/SNES%20Vertical%20Template%20by%20Shenske%20%28Modded%20by%20SAG%29.psd

Like I said this may not be practical for some people to use since I had to remove all groups to save it (see previous post). Maybe Shenske or someone could use this to convert the current UGC PSD into a BitBox one. In the mean time feel free to use this to start converting.

I got all your art from that folder as of July 10 @ 9:45PM EST. You may want to move that art or clear that out so I don't end up downloading it over again. The spread sheet has also been updated.

Alright, will do. If I re-upload any you've already gotten, it's only because I found a mistake and corrected it. Somehow Earth Defense Force got left off both my list of covers I plan to do, and the excel list I gave you, but I went ahead and did that cover, which is in with those that you already got.

EDIT: Okay, I finished all the covers I claimed in my earlier post. So I guess I'll call dibs on my next batch:

Illusion of Gaia

Joe and Mac 2

I can do a template no problem. I have the dimensions. Do you want the covers to be just resized and tweaked retail covers or spines customized with centered logos?

Maybe he can shed some light on if he has template ready or not because we obviously want them to be uniform.

I know there was a template in progress, but since I'm the only one claiming dibs on the horizontals so far, I thought I'd throw something together. It incorporates some of the stuff shenske had in his preview and uses a more retail accurate back than the verticals.

I can run with this or I can wait on shenske if you'd prefer. Thoughts?

I went ahead and made a cover for the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (4) pirate bootleg game for SNES. I know there are some people who may have it, and since there are many different labels for it, I made two options - one that says Sonic the Hedgehog and one that says Sonic the Hedgehog 4. I based the art on one of the "official" boxarts seen here: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_%28SNES%29

@StoneAgeGamer - got my batch's P's, R's and misc. covers done so far. I'll pick up working on them later tonight, if you want to grab what's in there now. You might want to double-check my list in my post as I don't think some of them got marked as called for on the bounty list, particularly around the Stunt Race FX area of the list.

Browsing your list and the covers here, it looks like almost every available cover on TCP has been claimed. I'm in the Gs, and I've found two unclaimed horizontal covers. So it looks like the next step is to turn to the raw scans and start making covers from scratch.

'ello, just poping in and putting this here.
A while ago I was cleaning up or remaking a bunch of covers of horizontal SNES covers for UGC cases. Not all of them are on the site.
Many of them are popular titles, I got most of the main Mario titles (SMW, YI, RPG, SMK, MP, SMAS) Zelda, MegaMan X, Gaia, DKC2, and more! I'm soon going to make DKC 1 and 3.
Some are in full retail, some have my custom spine, some are both.
Feel free to convert them. Not sure what this claim thing is, but it seems SeventhSon has mot of this.

I put you down for everything you requested from AMCE Animation Factory to Prince of Persia. I would like to spread out the load a bit since we need these done as quickly as possible. if you get done or close to done with those I marked you down for on the spreadsheet you can request more.

Some say it does, some say it doesn't. The issue with this converter was that it wasn't made actually for the Famicom systems. It was made for the original Yobo FC Game Console which was originally for the Famicom only. Instead of originally making an NTSC version (which they eventually did) they made this converter. The think the main problem with the converter is that the PCB is slightly thinner than a normal Famicom PCB. We have had customers say they got it to work with the Famciom by adding a pad to it to slightly tilting it to make a better connection. We just had too many returns early on, so we had to put up that disclaimer.

went through and crossed out the ones calmed. Some games are missing from the list.

If whoever calmed it does not mind, can I have Horizontal DKC 1? I'm going to remake it with better scans soon, The one on the site is not very good.

To whoever calmed the others, My updated covers are in the link above.

Glad to see some other people joining in! I'll probably be sticking strictly to continuing verticals for as long as I am converting these for StoneAgeGamer, but there's still plenty left to be made for both.

@StoneAgeGamer - Realistically, unless I'm mistaken, there aren't covers on this site for every single SNES game, but there are for most of them. At what point cover-wise do you think the cases will be ready to go on sale? I think obviously you'd want to have the big name Nintendo titles done, most of which Shenske is covering.

I am hoping to start taking pre-orders early this week. I already have cases in stock, but I am still waiting on documentation straps to arrive. I will at least want probably 300 - 400 games done before I request customers to choose art. I hope that's at least enough for them to select game to cover for their first order of cases.

Here's a link to my first batch:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bwthp5b5711cr7i/AAA7EkoJ62J9mZhrq0T3Y9Gxa/covers/bitbox

I've been following the template very closely and creating new backs and spines for (almost) all of the games I did. Adding in new screens, formatting text, adjusting levels on barcodes, etc. If you're just as happy with simply resizing the retail backs, I'll switch to doing it that way, it's quicker and easier (though not as nice in the end).

@charlesp1138
Nice work so far, Though you are removing a lot of the art on the backs of covers, like on Animaniacs or Double Dragon V.
The only real problem is on Alfred chicken, the spine logo for Mindscape has a white line and dark grey box around it.
I have covers with better scans of Aero the Acrobat and Double Dragon V if you want to use them.

Also, to remove moire patters on scans:
Filters > Noise > Despeckle

And for black or white levels:
Image > Adjustments > Exposure or Brightness/Contrast

Exactly why I asked about the style of backs that StoneAgeGamer which way he wants them. They can all be uniform like I've been doing, or just copies of the retail versions.

I want the Horizontals as close to retail as possible, obviously because of ratio difference there may be some sacrifices, but anything to keep them as close looking to retail as possible without very noticeable stretching.

Well, don't bother downloading mine yet. I'll replace the backs with retail backs.

They rest should be super quick if that's all I'm doing.

Yeah don't kill yourself over it, but if you could at least do the easier ones that would be good.

It's a good start, except you aren't supposed to stretch the back cover to fit the template, just center it. See one of my vertical covers: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aqbad5j2xz5gger/AAB0TYKFDVPKoXfjdUf7p-eca/E#lh:null-snes_earthbound.png

Also be sure to save it as a high-res png file.

Much better. My only suggestions, just to keep uniformity with the other verticals: On Nintendo-made games like this, I usually turn off the "Sold By" layer and the small Nintendo logo next to it, as it's redundant.

Also turn on the "Only For" layers on the front that go above the Super Game Boy artwork, since the back had the "Only For" as well. Otherwise you're good to go!

@sheep2001 & Arseen:

I think part of the confusion is that StoneAgeGamer meant to point out that Mel called Magic Sword (Vertical), not Magic Boy. I've been watching the thread closely to try to not call something someone else called dibs on, including recently announced lists that may not have been added to the Bounty Board yet - I was attempting to double-check the posts here vs the bounty board since there was the Ken Griffey mix up. But my confusion was that I didn't initially see Mel call Magic Sword (Vertical), or any vertical cover for that matter as I browsed through the previous posts.

However, looking over the list of what Mel has called according to the Bounty Board, I do now remember Mel calling Bubsy 1 & 2 and several others in one post - it's just that that post seems to have disappeared, unless I've just gone blind. Maybe Mel deleted or removed/edited it?

So my bad, I've removed Magic Sword (Vertical) from my latest to-do list.

I will probably be slow to update for the next 4 or 5 days. We are preparing for Cleveland's Classic Console & Arcade Gaming Show (CCAG) (http://www.ccagshow.com/). If you live in the area I highly suggest you come check it out. We will be there with large display with everything from EverDrives, used games, accessories, we will have a GDEMU on display, as well as BitBoxes.

SNES cases will be going up for sale soon, no pressure, but if any of you have time to do some of your prints it would be great. I think right now we have at least one print available for about half of the games.

So StoneAgeGamer, just out of curiosity - I know you guys were planning to do an N64 BitBox case at some point, but I wonder would an N64 cartridge fit in the SNES case in the space for a Super Famicom cart?

I assume if they are smaller than SFC carts, but wider than a SNES NA shell is tall then they should fit.

N64 cases should be out this fall.

Eyeballing the size difference I'd say the SFC cart is exactly 1cm wider and taller than N64 cart and 1mm thicker.

I was answering your question about if the bounties would still be up after release.

Personally I would prefer we concentrate on SNES games more at this time.

Sorry I haven't been around this community that long. SNES was a very popular system, why is there so many missing cover art?

My guesses are that there are a lot of pricey games that some boxes go for too much, and there seems to be more complete collectors for the NES than SNES.

Any covers in particular? I can probably whip up a good placeholder from lower quality scans.
Just post some game names and I'll see what I can do.

Also are you going to get any Kirby plushes back in stock any time soon?
Also, how would I redeem the credit I so far have? I kinda want to get my NES 2 AV modded. Would you be able to repair a SNES power jack as well?

I am more looking for ones that were claimed, but still unfinished. If anyone claimed art and no longer have the time to do it please let me know so we can open them up for others to claim.

You can just PM me and I will give you GC code for current finished art.

There are several that are claimed that I've been waiting for (mainly vertical versions of several common titles). I may end up doing them myself so I can finish off my collection. If I do and they open up again later, then I'll submit them here.

Are reports of 'issues' with covers welcome? In the latest batch I ordered prints of, I noticed at least one or two that had some minor mistakes like the incorrect ESRB rating or missing logos next to 'Sold By'. I'm fine with the ones that do not have the 'Sold By' text or logo at all, but having just 'Sold By' there sticks out like a sore thumb. Unfortunately, I didn't notice before purchasing.

They still look great on the shelf and appreciate all the work everyone has put into these :)

NBA All Star Challenge
Starfox
Starfox 2

Street Fighter II Turbo
Super Bases Loaded
Super Battletank 2
Super Mario Allstars

Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Street Fighter II
Tecmo Super NBA Basketball
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Tournament Fighters
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time
Terminator

Wild Snake

EDIT: I'll try to have these done this weekend, once Christmas festivities with family die down.

@StoneAgeGamer - I've completed those verticals above, plus I updated my previous Super Mario World: Return to Dinosaur Land to better match Super Mario World.

Uploaded here: https://app.box.com/s/t91txhom9ox5bvg4buqv

Let me know if there are any others that people are wanting, especially any missing "big name" titles, like Nintendo-made games. I may also be able to help with N64 covers once the template is decided and finalized.  :)
Thanks for this, TF - I think that this may cover the last few covers I need, but I'll double check :)

@StoneAgeGamer - Did everything check out on my last batch? Please add my store credit if it does. I'm looking to finally cash it in for something once you do.  ;)

Just wanted to bump this so SAG sees this. There's some pretty big name verticals in TyrannicalFascist's last batch, would like to have some of those available once the new shipment of boxes come in.

Yeah they checked out, I just need to add to database. I will try to get that done early next week.

I saw you have created the following in Bitbox:

George Foreman's KO Boxing
Adventures of Yogi Bear
3 Ninjas Kick Back

Will these be in UGC?

Whenever I look at the available covers for printing I'm still not seeing them. Did you upload them or is it just me?

They are now up, sorry we were waiting for some of the N64 covers to get done so we could do in a larger batch, but that is taking longer than expected.

Guys we still have a ton of SNES games without prints, some with vertical and nor horizontal, and some with horizontal and no vertical. Bounty is still up for these.

Did a few here. Not sure how many I'll do or when I'll have time to do them, so I'll just do them without claiming them beforehand, post immediately when I'm done. Doesn't seem like too many people are working on these anymore anyway so I doubt I'll step on any toes.

Horizontals:
Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure
Clue
Fatal Fury Special

Sorry, just realized I accidentally did some duplicate work on top of Larry. I have struck out those boxes in my previous posts and removed them from my Dropbox.

Here are the remaining horizontals:
Aerobiz
Musya: The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror
Troddlers
Wayne's World

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3sea0q0fqgnrgol/AACA4TnypR4sifJ9QdoYBSYHa?dl=0

Most of the horizontals remaining do not have UGC covers, are for PAL/JPN only, or are a pain in the butt to convert for one reason or another.

So I've noticed some of the coverart is "custom" or "unofficial" (i.e. Final Fight 2). Is there any chance that someone can make a more "official version of the coverart?

I've made a Toy Story horizontal cover based on the original box art, since there did not appear to be one.  I'm not sure of the best avenue to post these images so I figured I would just link from my personal dropbox account for now.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0quckz5xh7hwdb/SNES-Horizantal-BitBox-ToyStory.jpg (https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0quckz5xh7hwdb/SNES-Horizantal-BitBox-ToyStory.jpg)

I already did a Toy Story cover on the previous page, SAG just hasn't updated the list recently.

Hey i dont know if someone has done this but i have a case that is missing vertical art and i was hoping you could do it cuz your art is what the majority of my boxes are. I'm looking for Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind and i really really want it so unless you someone is doing it can you please do it so i can have an awesome cover :)

I decided to do my own Dragon Quest VI insert. I know there was already one out there to download, but I wanted something a little different.

Here's the one I found online. I thought the characters looked too stretched out, and the title too far to the right:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aqbad5j2xz5gger/AABu44yQcGVYk26gdwgqSw9sa/D?dl=0&preview=BB_DragonQuestVI_V.jpg

Here's the one I made. Check it out, feel free to use it if you want:

Also, here's one I made for Hyper Metroid. I made it because I hadn't yet found one that matched the art on my cartridge's label. It was my first, so I know I need some practice.

Here's another I made, this time for Super Baseball Simulator 1000

Made this one for Rockman and Forte

One for StarFox Legacy collection

Thanks a ton to Stoneagegamer for posting the tools and information for making these.

Where is AeroBiz cover for SNES? I only see AeroBiz supersonic, but the spreadsheet says there should be a vertical AeroBiz cover. Seems like there are way too many covers missing still. Can we divide up the work and flesh out the BitBox covers available for the community?
