I didn't get any feedback on my WIP on a Super Famicom template, so I'll take it no-one had any complaints about it then. ;D Anyway, I put some finishing touches on the template, and then used the SFC scans available on the site and made a few UGC covers with them. Not all the scans were the highest quality (300dpi scans meant I had to upscale a few slightly, and there are some raster artifacts), but I think they should all look at least decent printed out. I'm having a friend scan a whole bunch of SFC boxes for me to make UGC covers out of, so you should see more stuff in the coming weeks. Of course, if anyone has any SFC boxes to scan I'd be happy to do those as well. ;) Most games don't require a whole lot of work - it's not as straightforward as Megadrive or NES covers, but easier than converting CD covers to DVD cases, I think. Anyway, here's the first batch of covers.
Akumajou Dracula (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_akumajou-dracula_jp.jpg)
This game originally used a horizontal-style cover, so it required a lot of custom work. The front cover is a piece of art from an official guidebook for the game, I think it worked pretty well. :) The back uses art from the original back cover, but almost completely redrawn, with new screenshots and retyped text.
Rockman X (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_rockman-x_jp.jpg)
This was a little difficult to fit without cropping the artwork in a bad way (it'd be really bad to lose more of Chill Penguin or more of Rockman's legs), but I think it ended up looking OK. The back was straightforward, I just replaced the turqoise border with black since without the turqoise trim around the whole case it just looked out of place.
Rockman & Forte (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_rockman&forte_jp.jpg)
Pretty straightforward altogether, just "zoomed in" more on the artwork and pasted the logo on top of it.
Star Ocean (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_star-ocean_jp.jpg)
Like Akumajou Dracula, this was originally a horizontally oriented cover. I couldn't use the front cover illustration, so I recreated the logo from scratch and pasted it top of a stock space background. The back uses elements from the original back cover, but rearranged (there was no room for the screenshot captions, but I think it still looks good).
Super E.D.F. (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_super-edf_jp.jpg)
Same as Rockman & Forte pretty much, a very simple cover to put together.
I don't think a lot of people are really itching for Japanese Super Famicom covers here, but I hope at least someone will get use out of these! If nothing else I enjoy making them, so I'm happy all the same. ;D
-
They look pretty awesome especially the Star Ocean cover. I don't suppose you can make covers for Do-Re-Mi Fantasy and Hamelin no Violen Hiki? ;D
-
Its all good...nicely done :)
-
I thought i commented on your template in the template discussion thread, it must not have went through.
anyways ...
I think the covers look really good and the template meakes it look nice and uniform. :)
-
Personally, I like vertial cases much more than horizontal. It works for evrything. I'd like to see an effort made to make all the SNES covers we have made vertical.
It's because of the nature of the overwhelming majoirty of covers that I've custom and Japanaese games to conform to the horizontal standards set here. I'm in full support of vertical cases, but only if there's major efforts to convert the horizontal ones we currently have to the new standard.
-
MasterJSP: If I get raw scans, I would be happy to make them. I know I can get scans of Hameln no Violinhiki, but someone else would have to provide scans of Do Re Mi Fantasy.
satoshi_matrix: Yeah, I agree completely. The rotated SNES covers just look weird to me, and the fact that the spine ends up being on the "bottom" of the box feels odd to me as well. Unfortunately, I don't think converting western-style covers to a vertical template (well, this one anyway) would be very easy. I think very few games would have art on their US or PAL boxes that would be easily used on this template; even when the art could be cropped and resized I think logos and stuff would be tricky. Obviously, for many games you could just use the Japanese cover (which 9 times out of 10 looks infinitely better than the US one anyway), but there are many US games that don't have JP releases, and I'm sure others where the cover art just wouldn't work all too well. If there is interest though, I could easily make NTSC-U and PAL versions of this template.

How about doing it yourself....? Ever thought about this...? If you want all the covers vertical so desperately why not do it yourself?
I personally think a cover should be a as close as possible resemblance of the original box as it can be in sleeve form... Which means vertical for vertical covers and horizontal for horizontal covers....

i have a few ideas for a vertical template, i'm working on it right now.
i don't have the time to convert all the SNES covers though.
i'll just have to see if the template i'm making is even worth it anyway.
-
I can understand that. If you come up with a good template, I'll be sure to use it to convert as many covers as I can.

like this ?
(iposted it in the template discussion thread)
here is my idea for a Vertical SNES Template.
It turned out better than i had originally planned.
It has the three regions (NTSC-U, NTSC-J, PAL)
The front "canvas area" is still horizantal so most of the original artwork can be used in a conversion to the vertical template.
i used the konami logo to show where the developer's logo goes.
NTSC-U
(http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/627/snvprevo6.jpg)
NTSC-J (wip, need to change legal info and ratings logos)
PAL (wip, need to change legal info and ratings logos)
Feedback is deffinately appreciated for this one so please tell me your opinion!

Well, I think vertical cases work better, personally. Horizontal is all well and good for a cardboard box, but I think it is kinda awkward for a plastic case. And quite honestly, converting that many cases to vertical is too big a job for one person to do by him/herself. So I'm willing to help out the cause as much as possible. :)

When i get the template prepared and all ready i'll let you as well as everyone else.
I will announce it in the Template Discussion thread when i do.
I'm also going to attach a readme file to the template with suggestions, guidelines and reminders (not exactly a tutorial but this should be sufficient)
That way all the covers are consistant no matter which artist decides to use the tempate.
-
I noticed there were a bunch of SFC covers already on the site, but without much of a coherent design. I started adapting them to my template, cleaning stuff up and changing a thing or two along the way.
Super Mario World (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_super-mario-world_jp.jpg)
Cleaned up a lot of small details, mainly tweaking the outlines of the main illustrations. I also retyped most of the text on the back as it was a bit blurry. Finally I fiddled around a bit with the logo to make it fit the spine better.
Pilotwings (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_pilotwings_jp.jpg)
Tried something new with the spine this time around, I think it works pretty well for this cover. Other than that there was a lot of cleaning up, just getting rid of dust and spots, and making the blue backdrop look smooth and uniform.
-
Here's the next one.
Dragon Quest V (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_dragon-quest-v_jp.jpg)
-
Really digging your template Jigsaw, it's simple and not too busy.
I really like the Pilotwings cover and my small suggestion would be to continue the front cover color to the spine on your other covers like you did here. Really makes it stand out.
Kudos on a job well done!

-
Pilotwings was kind of a happy coincidence, the artwork stretched over the spine... even though it required a little cleaning up it was simple enough to use the sky backdrop for the spine as well. Personally I like the uniform black look, but at the same time it's cool if some covers have more unique spines that break up the monotomy. I always figured I would judge on a case-by-case basis whether it'd be a good idea to do a non-black spine, and Pilotwings just proved to be the first cover I made where I think it fit best. I was thinking of making the SMW spine yellow, but I opted for the black one in the end. If there is interest, I could easily make alternate versions with different spines.
-
I threw together alternate versions of Dragon Quest V, Star Ocean and Super Mario World, with different spines. I guess I could make a Pilotwings case with a black spine as well, it just kind of slipped my mind. I also converted the Final Fight cover to my template.
Dragon Quest 5 (Alternate) (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_dragon-quest-v-alternate_jp.jpg)

I really like the colored spine look.
Great job, Jigsaw!

Here's the latest one...
Mortal Kombat (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_mortal-kombat_jp.jpg)
Painstakingly built from scratch, modeled after the retail box. The back looks slightly different, but the layout is mostly the same (I fixed a typo in the copyright information though ;)).
-
Hi there Jigsaw, exciting work on the customs!
I noticed you seem to have covers of certain Super Famicom games (such as Mortal Kombat) that are not already on the site. Could you also provide the raw so someone else can make it into an original cover?
It would be great if for every custom cover there would also be one original cover.
If you don't feel like doing originals, perhaps you could provide the Raw and I'll do them for you.
-
Well, for Mortal Kombat, I didn't have any raw scans! I used graphics from other MK covers, and looked at the copy of the game right here in my shelf for reference on the layout. Every other cover I've posted here are built from raw scans or finished covers from this site. However, I'm waiting for a friend to scan a bunch of covers for me - I intend to convert all of those using my template, but I'll make sure to upload the raw scans as well when I get them.

Long time no post. Here's a new one, and hopefully a few more are on the way...
Street Fighter II Turbo (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_street-fighter-ii-turbo_jp.jpg)

-
I noticed a few small mistakes with the SF2 Turbo cover, so I fixed it and uploaded a new version... Doubt anyone grabbed it yet but I thought I'd mention it.
-
Super Metroid (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_super-metroid_jp.jpg)

One more...
Super Mario Kart (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_super-mario-kart_jp.jpg)

I just got hold of some nice, high quality Rockman artwork, so I decided to go back and revisit some Rockman covers I worked on before... Frankly I was never very happy with them, so I'm glad I got a chance to create better covers.
Rockman X (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_rockman-x_jp.jpg)

And here's one for those who want a more modern look...

Rockman & Forte (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_rockman&forte_jp.jpg)
Rockman 7 is up next.
-
Those look really good Jigsaw....
-
Thanks. :)
Rockman 7 (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_rockman-7_jp.jpg)
That's it for now... There are more covers on the way, but I'm going away for Easter and won't be able to work on anything until next week. Apart from my backlog of stuff I will have access to a scanner, courtesy of my new roommate, so I should be able to prove 100+ raw scans of Japanese Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Saturn, PS, Dreamcast, DS covers and a few other things. SFC and MD has top priority but I will try to get everything scanned.
-
I couldn't help myself... :D
Rockman 7 (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_rockman-7-alternate_jp.jpg) (Alternate)
-
Hey Jigsaw I took a look at your SFC covers today and I'm in the process of uploading them... most of them look really god and I had to do almost nothing to make them perfect... ;D
There is one exception though unfortunately.... On the Rockman & Forte cover the back has many pretty unsharp spots which weren't fixable even by sharpening extensively... You couldn't redo the back with some sharper scans could you?
All others will be on our site soon....
-
These Super Famicom covers are so good. I want to go on eBay and buy cartriges just so I can print these out. Bravo.
-
tiktektak: I did the best I could working from the scans available... but I could actually probably recreate it from scratch instead, it's just a bit more work. I hadn't looked at it too carefully, but on second inspection I definitely agree that parts are a bit on the blurry side. I will rework it and upload a new version some time next week.
-
Finally, after several hours of tedious work, I've finished and uploaded a revised version of the R&F cover. The design is essentially identical, so I didn't bother to create a new preview.
-
Akumajou Dracula XX (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_akumajou-dracula-xx_jp.jpg)
Many thanks to the people at http://npes.free.fr/ for the rear scan!
-
Almost forgot I had this one finished as well...
F-Zero (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_f-zero_jp.jpg)
Once again, thanks to http://npes.free.fr/ for the scans.
-
I have several SFC games that I have the boxes for. After the last couple arrive (currently in transit from HK) I'm going to scan them all and hopefully you fine gentlemen will be willing to make covers for them.
-
Excellent! How many, or rather, which games are we talking about?
-
Bahamut Lagoon *
Front Mission Gun Hazard *
Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu
Romancing SaGa 3
Seiken Densetsu 3 *
Shin Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei 2
Terranigma (Tenchi Souzou)
The *'d ones are the ones that I'm still waiting for the arrival of.
-
Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu (http://img2.kult-mag.com/images/forum/icones/icon40.gif)
-
Alright, cool. Unless I'm mistaken a few of those have horizontally oriented covers which might make them quite tricky to adapt to my template, but I'll be happy to give it a try.
-
Off the top of my head I know that Romancing SaGa and Terranigma both are horizontally oriented, so yeah, I bet they'll be more difficult to adapt to your particular template.
-
If you are able to scan the manuals as well, that might help, as they are generally vertically oriented regardless of the cover design.
In any event, I'm looking forward to the scans. :)
-
Sure, I'll include scans of the manuals as well. I think I'm going to start scanning tonight after work. It's amazing how easy it is to get complete SFC games compared to SNES games.
-
First batch of scans. All are 600 dpi, and I've added manual scans for the horizontal boxes. The vertical ones had the same art on the cover and manual.

Shin Megami Tensei (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_shin-megami-tensei_jp.jpg)

Had to do some creative cropping and extending the background to get the cover illustration to fit in a decent way... I think it turned out OK in the end.
-
Looks really nice....
-
I like it!

Doukas: Please keep them coming, if you have more. I'm a sucker for Super Famicom boxart.
I'm going to be turning out a few covers over the coming days based on these scans - they are going to be as close to the original as possible - I leave the customs (horizontal ones) to the other guys.
-
I've only got one more coming, Seiken Densetsu 3, which is still in the mail. But as soon as it arrives I'll add the scans.

Doukas: Kevin's foot is spaced between the front and the spine - a part of it is missing from the scans. If there's any way you scan that final bit for me, it'd look perfect! If not, then we just have to make do with the one below.
Seiken Densetsu 3 (SFC | JP)

Ah ha, I see what you're talking about. Here's a second scan of the front from a different angle:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Doukas.retail.raw_snes_seiken_densetsu_3_front2.jpg
-
Alright Doukas - with that new scan of yours I can rebuild the front somewhat better, so I'm going to restart from scratch. The next version should look significantly better.
-
Seiken Densetsu 3 (SFC | JP)
The front now looks a lot better - more authentic - that cloud in the top lefthand corner of the front was looking badly edited before, and Kevin's foot was missing.

So awesome... 8)
-
Glad you like it! I started working on Fire Emblem last night.
-
Good to hear! Again, thanks, I really like your template/covers/work, and I appreciate any help you can provide. :)
-
I really like how official it looks. I'm definately looking forward to Fire Emblem.
-
I'm really glad to see Super Famicom covers here. I would love to case several games (Star Ocean, Rockman & Fortre,
Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger) but to be honest I don't like the way this template nearly as much as the vertical uniform look that shenske's NTSC-J template would provide. If anyone is willing, could I get at the very least, Star Ocean and Rockman & Fortre in shenske's NTSC-J template please?
Other than that, keep up the great work. I adore seeing these.

... And here's Fire Emblem. I kinda rushed parts of it, so I might look it over once more with a fresh, well-rested pair of eyes in the morning and make any fixes if necessary, but enjoy this for now:
Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_fire-emblem-seisen-no-keifu_jp.jpg)
-
Sweet! It looks really nice!
-
For a not finished cover it looks pretty perfect to me.... ;D
-
Couldn't be bothered to go over Fire Emblem again... but if you guys like it, hey, that's good enough for me. ;)
Here's the next one...
Front Mission Gun Hazard (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_front-mission-gun-hazard_jp.jpg)
This one took a lot of work. I had a few ideas for the front, but eventually I ended up just cropping part of the original cover illustration, and I think it works out OK. The back was trickier, and I'm not sure if I'm that happy with it... but I've certainly spent enough time with this cover as is. :P Between the box and the manual there was at least some artwork I could use, so considering it comes from a horizontal cover I think it could've been a lot worse. Ultimately though, I think the end result looks decent, and I suppose that's what matters. ;)
-
Honestly, that looks great! Thank you, I really like it! 8)
-
Yeah, that's a really nice job taking the original cover and making it fit your style. I personally think the back looks just fine.
-
Hey Jigsaw.... I did look at your covers yesterday....
Front Mission and Fire Emblem look very very good.... Very good work....
On Seiken Densetsu 3 though the back looks kinda blurred on some text and screens as well... We allready have Dante Alis version were unfortunately the back isn't too sharp too so I would be really happy to get a second version which is perfect.... If that would be possible Jig I would be very happy.... :)
-
Presumably we both worked from the same raw scans, which were unfortunately blurry in parts. I can see if I can try to improve it, but don't expect miracles.
-
I rescanned the back, and the images and text look much clearer and closer to the actual box.
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Doukas.retail.raw_snes_seiken_densetsu_3_back2.jpg
-
Great! I'll put together a new version when I have time.
-
The new raw looks much better though if someone makes a new version the dust and scratches have to be cleaned again which will be a lot of work.... I hope jigsaw has the time.... :)
-
I will eventually - however right now I'm in the middle of packing up all my stuff and getting ready to move, and then I'll be gone for about a week. I should have more time to work on covers and stuff in about two weeks, though.
-
hello guys, i would like to know if the box universale game case is compatible with snes japanese and euro cartridges?
-
hello guys, i would like to know if the box universale game case is compatible with snes japanese and euro cartridges?
Yeah the Euro & Japanese game carts fit in the Universal Game Cases too. :)
-
haa great thank you shenske, now i have to found a seller who can to delivery in France hehe
-
Sorry to bump this but I thought I'd add this link since it has great art & wallpapers that could help in the creation of the Treasure of the Rudras cover that I've requested: http://www.fantasyanime.com/valhalla/rudra_wallpapers.htm
-
That's a great resource, thanks!
Unfortunately I've been super swamped the last couple of months, and on top of that my computer is in a dire need of a total overhaul... I did try to work on some covers a while back, but Photoshop damn near grinds to a halt whenever I try to do much of anything, hence my lack of output recently. Rest assured I still haven't forgotten about the requests though, and if nothing else I'd still like to do them, just for my own sake... but we'll see when I have the time and chance to do it. These pictures should definitely help, anyway!
-
No problem, I know how life gets. Thanks again for sticking with it! I just happened to be perusing that site and noticed how nice those wallpapers were and how they could be used for this project, so I figured I'd add the link. :)

I use to have this case, but for the life of me I don't know what ever happened to it. :(

SNIF! Those are bad news =(
Well I hope someone gets to do this cover, such a cool game, and so little love to it =(
Plus, is the only one I needed to be stored!
BTW, can you search for it? I dindt even find the sleeve image for that cover, it can be custom also :s

right, i've been taking a crack at it for you (custom art i'm afraid) nearly finished the front, but i'll need somebody to translate the back into hirigana for me as my japanese is far from good enough to read the text. (with hirigana/katakana, i can just retype it in, including the kanji)
-
wow that's GREAT! I'll see how can I help with that! i'll be posting the news
-
I'd be happy to help but it's damn near impossible to make out the text from those pictures.
-
that's true, but i don't know if theres a website with the info on anywhere? or if not, if you provide me with alternative text, i can write that.
-
I'd be happy to help but it's damn near impossible to make out the text from those pictures.
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/S_25570_1144237096_ShootingMacross-RS.jpg
This any better... It's still pretty damn low res but maybe the text is readable?
-
thats brilliant, i can actually make out most of the furigana there. I'll shout if i get stuck on anything!
(i'll try and have a rough draft up by tonight btw)
*edit - Don't go getting your hopes up for this by the way, i'm not renowned for making paticularly good covers! :)
**edit - Ended up using this one. http://www.anime-games.co.uk/images/screenshots/m/macross/scram-valk/covers/back.jpg (http://www.anime-games.co.uk/images/screenshots/m/macross/scram-valk/covers/back.jpg) There was still a few kanji i couldn't make out, and the only text translated is that in blue (the rest doesnt have furigana :() slightly higher res though, so for whomever can translate the legal text we need, should be a lil easier

A uhh... 'preview' haha. I know, the text isn't right/complete, the font is Horrific, and it all looks very 'made in paint' (it's not of course).
...but..... A. it's not finished! and B, i did tell you not to get your hopes up! lol
suggestions welcome though
-
Actually is pretty good, it looks pretty! But the Style of the cover (front) is kinda "TOO NEW" for it. I mean the anime style is not like the old Macross... I'll be more than glad to help you out with that, but could you send me yor sorce file? (PSD I suppouse?).
Like something like this:
http://crash.inweb.dk/wallpapers/anime/Macross/Macross1DP_1600.jpg
I couldnt do much about the kanji translation tho :(
-
Well, the Japanese nerd in me couldn't let your - admittedly ambitious, but ultimately failed - attempt att transcribing the text pass, so I bit the bullet and strained my eyes for a while in order to read the text. :P Here's the full transcript:
(Actually those exclamation marks at the end is supposed to be one character with two of them - I just don't know how to type it)
The second part isn't about the game, merely instructions about how to get in touch with Bandai if there are any problems with the game. The very last part (starting with the header バンダイグループお客様相談センター) is just the address and phone number for getting in touch with them. I didn't bother transcribing it as it would be a huge pain, and can probably be copied from any other Bandai game from around the same era anyway.
Comments about the actual cover:
What struck me first was the misspelling of the title; what you've got there reads something like "Scramfle Hulkysaw" - it should be "スクランブルバルキリー". I also couldn't help notice that the subtitle is placed differently relative to the Macross logo in all three instances - I reckon the one on the spine looks the best, so it would probably be a good idea to adjust the logos on the front and back to match. The logo itself is clearly a bit different (and plainer) too, but I assume you're simply working with what you have, and since I don't have any other Macross logos on hand I can't really help you there.
I have a few issues with the fonts, too. First off I couldn't help notice that the font on the code on the spine is different than in my template - are you missing the font? I can't recall off the top of my head which font I used, but I thought it was a standard one. If not I should probably upload it so it can be included with the template. As for the Japanese text I'm assuming that you're simply going with Windows' default Japanese font. It can work but it looks incredibly plain - I'd recommend you go searching around for some other Japanese fonts. Actually, let me save you some trouble and upload the ones I have, that should save you a lot of trouble and give you a lot more options. I'm also a little unsure of the colours chosen for the text, for the "Scramble Valkyrie" logo in particular, but to the text on the back as well, to some extent. The blue on the back is quite hard to read (though I guess the busy background is mostly to blame), and the red-on-blue for the logo simply looks a little awkward. On a final note, the publisher's logo should go on the spine, under the product code.
It may sound like I have nothing but complaints, but I think you're off to a good start, and eventually I think you'll be able to put together a pretty nice custom cover. :)
-
WOW...
Thats really helpfull! IM trying to customize it too so I can show you how am I going, but I need some Hi-Res pics from Macross Saga (not Frontier) like this one... but without the ugly DVD scheme...

I did a little googling and found some Macross stuff that may or may not be helpful. Konachan.com (http://konachan.com/post?tags=macross) has a couple of Macross wallpapers that may be useable, and there's also this cover for a Macross game for some 80's computer (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://amigan.yatho.com/MacrossBoxFront.png&imgrefurl=http://amigan.yatho.com/&usg=__kYJbynbkzyf4NYppSKEEOhHIJog=&h=2500&w=2000&sz=10385&hl=en&start=12&itbs=1&tbnid=onnzOhCREMtQGM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmacross%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26tbo%3D1%26imgtbs%3Dz%26imgsz%3D4mp%26tbs%3Disch:1), though I figure that's maybe a little too oldschool.
-
ah yes, the ten-tens were missing i appologise. as for the font on the side, i'm using gimp, and it actually came up as an image layer, which is why it's different. (i'm not sure why though?) i'll up my psd, but i'm away from home at the moment, so it'll be monday before i get it up.
and as i said, i know it's not perfect, it was just a 'demo' if you will, so i can gather all the feedback you've managed to give, which has all been hugely useful. I think one of my biggest problems here is i don't really know the sources i'm working with very well (and i can't design that well either :/) but we WILL get it done! lol :D

@Akumu: I guess one post is enough, but thats pretty sweet...
NOw, getting back to the Macross issue, men, that scan is pretty neat, hope can do something with that...!
-
Here's my atempt of doing the cover using all of your comments, advices, and help, what do you think?
I modify a little one of the templates posted here.
Im having issues with the back, the background image, any help would be great.
Also, the cover one, is the raw scan, I dont know how to fix it (copy/pasted from the link with the big computer cover one).
And dont know hjoy to use the software you use to "put it in the case" lol.
I can send the sorce file (PSD) to anone who wants to fix it :)
since I used some materials for the first one posted (like the Samuse logo, and the ingame pictures)
(http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/7101/famicomcustompamacross.th.jpg) (http://img294.imageshack.us/i/famicomcustompamacross.jpg/)
What Akumu made with his template is awesome, specially the back and the labels in front!

He made two posts because he uses two different styles for his cover! This is legit!

Based on Akumu's work I made another one, of course, based on your advices and materials :)
PLEASE, take a look at it and if someone knows how to clean raw scans gimme a link or a hint :P I can send the source file (PSD to whoever thinks it can fix it, since Im not a talented designer and clean the actual raw scans that the cover has). And if he/she is in the mood, feel free to "3d-it" with that preview software that makes cover look awesome =)
I tried to match the back of the cover as close as the original showed in the previos pictures of the box.
here it is:

btw: Akumu, can you send me the first Taekwondo game template? that looks more close to a sfc box and the one with the donald game :)

I didn't use a template, but I made you one really quick. Every part is editable.

I uploaded a new version of my Front Mission Gun Hazard cover (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_front-mission-gun-hazard_jp.jpg), as I noticed a rather embarrassing typo on the back of the box... apologies to anyone who already printed out the first version!
-
Got a whole slew of covers for various formats scanned recently (raws and more finished covers will be posted eventually - stay tuned), and I just couldn't resist converting this cover to my template.
Starfox (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Jigsaw.custom.snes_starfox_jp.jpg)
It was really fun to finally get around to making this cover - I actually used a low res scan of the front cover of this game to make the first mockup of this SFC template, so I'm really pleased to be able to make it into a proper cover. I'm pretty happy with how it came out too; like many other covers from Nintendo it was really easy to work with since the dimensions already fit this layout even better than the original SFC boxes. :)
PS. I am still working on the Bahamut Lagoon cover... the front is finished, but since the original is a horizontal cover I have to make the back from scratch which is quite a bit of work. I'll get it done eventually, but in the meantime I might work on a few more covers that are easier to convert and/or more interesting to me personally so I can maintain motivation to work on them. Rest assured it's coming eventually though! Rudra no Hihou, Romancing Saga 3, Shin Megami Tensei II, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma and a few others are in the pipeline as well, but who knows when I'll be able to get all those finished... @_@

That's odd. Well, I reuploaded it, so it should work now.

When it comes to Jigsaw's work I can't help it! :D

Haha, oh OK, I didn't expect it to go so quickly, I had just assumed there had been some sort of slip-up on my end. My bad.
-
I read in "Home" that admins can modify the covers, how can I send the one I made for Macross so they can fix it? I mean, the one I showed you only has a "RAW Cover" bcuz i dont know how to clean it up xD
btw, Thank u Akumu for the template!

cesar, if you send me the scans, I can do it.

Will do, i'll send you the link through PM.
but anyways, here it is:

review it please :)
-
The overall layout looks nice, but there's still a few lingering issues.
-The "Scramble Valkyrie" text on the logo is still somewhat difficult to read, and the purpleish hue kind of sticks out without any other design elements using the same colour. Using a light steel blue similar to the colours already found in the Macross logo may work better.
-The spine is still missing the Zamuse logo as well as the correct product code.
-The back looks a little incomplete without the publisher address/information. I'm also wondering about the screenshots... are they the correction dimensions? The Super Famicom generally outputs graphics in a 256x240 or 256x256 resolution, meaning emulator screenshots and the like will be square (or near-square). However, the games were of course meant to be played on a 4:3 display, meaning any such screenshots should be stretched out to a 4:3 ratio for them to look correct. It's a little difficult to tell from the preview but it looks to me like the screenshots are too narrow.
edit: oh, and I forgot to mention, the way the text below the Zamuse logo is cut off on the front is not very attractive...
-
HERE (http://www.mediafire.com/?tz5zkwnhcnm) is a package I put together with (most of) the Japanese fonts I've got installed. I tried to remove a couple of doubles and mostly worthless fonts, but I couldn't be bothered to double check exactly what was included and what was left out. In any event, it should give anyone working with Japanese text a lot more options than simply using the fonts that come with Windows.
-
thats really helpful Jigsaw, thanks!
Umh, the logos and screenshots...were taken from this one previewsly posted here:
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/7391/macrosssnes.jpg
I dont know where to find a better pic of the game, and the Samuse Logo....
Im gonna leave you here the PSD file, which contains the raw scans in it, I also handed it to Akumu to see if he can make something better, and make it look more "SuperFamicom" style:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1J84QWCZ
Also ripped the adress that contains a pic of the whole box of the game, I manage to find a raw scan of the picture from the back, and finally know how's the spine for this box:
http://www.anime-games.co.uk/images/screenshots/m/macross/scram-valk/covers/cover.php
I wish I could find a better image for the front cover tho :(
please, feel free to modify it!

So I guess were waiting a bit longer as your still pumping out covers. Any idea when you plan on releasing them?
-
Real soon, basically I just feel like doing alot of covers, then I get a little bored with it, release them, then repeat the cycle a few weeks later.
Wait for what btw?
-
Great job on those Fire Pro covers! I had wanted to convert them to my template myself but was a little unsure of how to go about it since their layouts didn't necessarily lend themselves to a very straightforward conversion.
I have a few slight issues with the covers made with my template however... I'm not sure if they are simply creative decisions on your part or if you're misunderstanding anything about the template, but I want to mention it anyway. First off, both Mario games as well as SFPWS are missing the product code on the bottom of the spine - the Mario games have them around the logo obviously, but when creating the template I would intentionally put them at the bottom for any game, for a consistent, uniform look. Secondly I don't think there's any need for the solid black behind the Super Famicom logo on the top of the spine, I think it really sticks out on the Mario Collection cover, and even worse on the Yoshi's Island one as it obscures part of the spine design. Many of my covers use a solid black background for the entire spine, but for any of them that don't I simple let the background graphics extend throughout the whole spine, and if the "Super Famicom" text under the logo gets obscured or hard to read I'd make it black instead of light grey. You can take a look at my Dragon Quest V and Pilotwings covers for reference, in case anything is unclear.
As for more cover-specific criticism, I'm not thrilled with how the "YOSSY ISLAND" design on the Yoshi's Island cover looks - it's cropped rather awkwardly, with most of the Y missing and plenty of space below the D. I would suggest removing it altogether and recreating it from scratch to fit the proportions of the cover.
Outside of those issues I think you've done a great job, and I'm always happy to see other people using my cover template. :)
-
great job Akumu!
btw, any news on my Macross cover? :)

Good news for you Cesar! like i've just said in this topic http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=3494.0
I managed to swap a boxed front mission for a boxed Chojiku Yousai Macross - Scramble Valkyrie!! So Good quality scans for this game should become available soon enough. I'll follow the steps on the Scanning guide to get the best quality possible.

Anyone got the URL for the Rockman & Forte cover ? Seems like a dead link.
-
Wow, nice job on getting the originally horizontal cover to look good vertical, Jigsaw.
-
Thanks, it did take quite a bit of work though! (which is part of the reason it took forever)
The front cover is mostly based on the manual (thankfully vertically oriented), but with the exception of the Bahamut Lagoon logo, screenshots, barcode and copyright info, the back was redone completely from scratch. Now to see if there's another hellish project to tackle next... ;D
-
Here's one I've needed for a while. I used the retailish cover already on the site for most of it.

The bottom screenshot I got from here - http://www.romulation.net/Retro/SNES/Torneko_no_Daibouken_-_Fushigi_no_Dungeon.7z.html (http://www.romulation.net/Retro/SNES/Torneko_no_Daibouken_-_Fushigi_no_Dungeon.7z.html) and I had to enlarge it quite a bit, so it's probably too pixelated for the site.
If anyone has a better screenshot, please let me know.
For the text on the back, I just copied it from the other cover, so hopefully there were no errors there.
Any comments/suggestions?

They have a bunch of screenshits at moby games. You could always grab some screens from there.
http://www.mobygames.com/game/snes/torneko-no-daibouken-fushigi-no-dungeon/screenshots
And the Chun Soft logo should be on the front and back of the template too.

Updated the preview.

Yes definitely, no one having complaints because your "WIP on a Super Famicom template" is best. I have seen other also but this one is too good.
-
Would there be any chance for Englisified cover with back text in English.
Name of the game could be
the Side Story of Dragon Quest IV
Torneko's Mystery Dungeon
Or something like that.
I do only have the Japanese version of the game (CIB), no repro cart, but Japanese text cover among my US SNES covers just would stick out like sore thumb. :D
-
Is there any chance I could get a cover made? I need one for Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden, a game someone gave me like 10 years ago out of the blue. Thanks!

Not too bad.
Front title is bit out of focus on the first charecter.
Some specks of dirt here and there.
Leftmost edge of the cover shows the bend of box.

Fixed what I could.

Better.
Out of focuness is still there, but I quess that would need rescan.
Anyway that should print out just fine. :D

I've just recently joined this website, although I've lurked for about 2 months since I first discovered this website.
I've also just recently purchased about 110 Super Famicom games (about 90 cart-only and about 20 CIB) and I want to get UGC covers for them. I hope that Super Famicom vertical retail covers (or horizontal if that's how the original game came) are still being made.
When I get the chance, I'll try to figure out if I have any boxed copies of SFC games which we don't already have scans for and scan and upload them.
I also hope that the many SFC games which were never released in the U.S. which are now starting to get reproduction carts made can get covers made as well.
Anyway, please keep up the good work with these SFC covers.

Please do, remember scanning instructions 600DPI, descreen on and super flat. Thank you

Covers are made by some individuals but not hosted on the site. Request them and you might get lucky
Anyway, please keep up the good work with these SFC covers.

I think you would benefit from higher quality scans (for these games I don't yet have any to offer).
But all and all quite nice ones designwise.

Hi There,
i have done some covers for me three Super Famicom Games Contra 3, Mega Man Bass and Final Fight 1.
I know they look different than the usual ones, but i have seen the nice template with the black bar on the upper side of the front too late.
Btw. i wonder how you manage it to fit the slim famicom front picture to the wide front of a UGC without stretching or cutting it off too much.
Anyway - here you are:
(http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/826/ek3u.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/826/ek3u.jpg/) (http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/19/3jsr.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/19/3jsr.jpg/) (http://imageshack.us/scaled/thumb/708/c0ze.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/708/c0ze.jpg/)

it's been cleaned pretty well, but there are a few dust spots/blemishes remaining. The spine still shows fold marks. And the Logo's could do with some TLC. Not far from being great IMHO though.
-
oops I thought that I got rid of the mark at the top of the cover before I posted it. What does TLC mean?
-
TLC = 1 Tender Loving Care
2 A female rap group
-
Does the cover for SoulBlader look too stretch?
-
What does TLC mean?
In this case additional cleaning and touch ups.

Does the cover for SoulBlader look too stretch?
If you compare to the original yes, but if you just see the cover it doesn't look too bad.

Can someone makes Skyblazer and Wild Guns in SFC format?
-
Hi,
There are already SFC covers existing for 6 of these 7 games I just got, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to change the spines on those to this vertical SFC style?
2 examples of vertical SFC spine:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/c4yu55vo2gvy8dd/FFGuycoveralternative1.png#
http://www.mediafire.com/view/0ha55kiv5no4d/Mods#8v60cnk9r8c5ouh
I'm not a very computer savvy guy, but I'll try to study photoshop more. If anyone can help I am grateful to you.
These are the 6 games that already have SFC covers, but without the SFC vertical spine format:
Castlevania Dracula X:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=9350
Megaman 7:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=9189
Megaman X:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=9092
Megaman X2:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=11226
Megaman X3:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=11227
Rockman & Forte:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?game_id=6380
Megaman Soccer doesn't have a Super Famicom cover that I could find, but I would be ok with just the regular SNES vertical having a SFC spine if that's ok with somebody.

Thanks

Thank you so much Mel. I'm amazed at how many cool covers you do
@Arseen
I figured you already knew about it... but for a moment I reveled in the idea that I 'discovered' a 'new' classic first. I think with such dedicated retro enthusiasts around TCP it's impossible to rediscover an older game. Everyone is already aware of all the good games. Sometimes I forget that this website has been around for a few years. Oh well, I still look forward to playing :P

I barely knew of the game... and on closer search there are 3 parodiuses, of which yours is the newest one.

Cool, glad I could actually find an old Nintendo game you're less familiar with. I figured you must be like a living, breathing encyclopedia of retro game history and lore on account of how long you've been at TCP, haha.

If it's ok with Mel and Lahsek, I'll post some Super Famicom covers they made with the vertical template. I don't want to post them though unless they're fine with that.

Thank you so much ;D. I actually started making a custom Sonic Wings cover.
No worries, its taking longer than I thought as although its 400dpi, I have had to re-size it a bit (didnt realise how small it was! lol) so am then having to do quite a lot of clean up.
Will hopefully find time to finish it by tomorrow.
-
I used the scans uploaded to Nintandbox to create the following Seiken Densetsu 2 cover. I spent a decent amount of time removing blemishes from the front and back portions. For the alternate version I recreated the spine so I could center the title.

Here is my first custom cover for Sonic Wings. I had to borrow art for various places due to not finding a lot of art for this game. Feed back would be awesome.
-
Really nicely done there Antwon, excellent first cover! For a game that hardly has any decent art that I could find at least, you did a hell of a job finding the images you did.
You got the size and DPI there, so tick!
Two things I would say for constructive feedback =
1 - Post smaller image previews, lol........just go to "share" on mediafire, then select "more options" and then choose something like "huge thumbnail".
I have only recently discovered that, thanks to the Mel on here, and it just makes things a bit easier to navigate and have on a page full of other posts and images. *EDIT* - Ohh, I see youve just done this! so only one piece of feedback then! lol.
2 - Watch out for your deleting/cropping......where you have obviously used the magic wand tool to take out the background of the main front log, it has also cut out chunks of the logo itself - where perhaps the colour of the background was similar to a colour in the logo itself, its just bled into it and deleted it out - same for the one of the back too.
Makes it look a bit rough and I had trouble with this when I started...........best advice, get familiar with the "clone" tool as soon as possible! it is crazy simple to use once you get past the initial small learning curve and once you do, it makes all manner of things easier and BETTER, it has revolutionised my covers.
And also on the subject of a little rough, the text boxes and text on the back is slightly rough there, so watch those colour fills and again, try the clone tool to smooth those edges out and just makes things generally look a bit neater.
Overall though man, that is a FANTASTIC FIRST cover! a million miles better than my first attempts! lol..........hope this feedback is both helpful and taken as intended from one SFC lover to another, the guys heres given me a lot of feedback and encouragement over the last few months, little hints here and there, and it has helped me to improve so much.
But you really do not have as far to go as I did at first. ;D
-
Thanks! I'm glad you like it and really appreciate the feed back. I definitely will learn the clone tool to touch up the logo and for future covers I decide to work on. By chance do you have a scan of Kiki Kaikai for SFC? I would love to have a cover for that game.

Can somebody make a vertical cover for Final Fantasy VI with the art from the one posted earlier in this thread? Thanks.
-
Hey all, just registered to say that I really like your work and I'm quite interested in getting my Super Famicom collection fitted with UGCs and covers from this thread. Gonna borrow a template and give it a try myself (I'm terrible with photo editing, but hopefully there are some high quality scans of some of the box art for games that aren't up yet). Here are a few from my collection that I'll try to make:
The Firemen
Flashback
Kirby's Dreamland 3
Kirby's Super Star
Mother 2
R-Type III
Super Donkey Kong 3

Hey there Ack,
Welcome to the forums and also glad to have another SFC enthusiast around!
Just wanted to let you know that I have already made the two Kirby games you want there, and am currently working on one for The Firemen (I could also knock up Donkey Kong Country and R-Type III pretty easy).
Check out my thread (linked in the signature section below this post but for now, here are the two Kirby games where I adapted the retail covers into UGC covers =

Cool, glad you like them........that wood grain was a real bastard too, so glad that looks good. ;D
As far as raws are concerned, all over really, many come from people here who have scanned them in or do some from responding to requests.
Others and I also use these sites =

Rad, that first site actually has all but a few of the boxes I'm looking for. Seems like covering the rest of my collection will be easier than expected.

Hey Ohnoyounintendidnt or Jigsaw, do either of you guys have a template for these? Now that I've got a few raws to work with, I wanna make sure I get the dimensions and positioning of the box parts correct.

Hi all,
I'm new here and I'm learning to create covers right now.
During my first attempt at photoshop (ever), I've created 2 Super Famicom vertical covers. The source material I could find wasn't that great and there is much I would like to improve in the future, but still.... sharing something is better than sharing nothing I guess :).
Rendering Ranger R2:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/7l144qgadmjercx/Rendering_Ranger_R2.jpg
Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/jait4lcxocogpb6/Macross_Scrambled_Valkyrie.jpg
I definitely seek to improve my photoshop skills so that I can create some more professional looking covers in the future. Once I manage that, I'll share those as well.
-
I counter with Segamer covers that should be easy enough to covert to full Japanese Verticals.

(http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/5872/jait4lcxocogpb64g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/view/?jait4lcxocogpb6)
Updates: Changed the front image, the Zamuse logo, Macross logo on the spine and back, and the screenshots on the back.
The Japanese text on the back was ripped off a scan of the original box. However, I as I do not speak Japanese, I can't tell if the text is correct.
Gonna work on Rendering Ranger R2 some other time and update that one as well.

Hello.... new member needing a bit of help. Rather than bother you guys for cover help right off the bat, thought I would give it a try for myself. Im looking for a Super Famicom Template for Universal Game Cases. I followed a link on the previous page but could not get the link to work. Tried doing a web search for "Super famicom Universal Game Case Template" and no luck. Maybe Im going about this the wrong way. Does anybody have a link to a template they can share?
Thanks.....

Would any of ya'll happen to have a blank SFC template that you used above? If I could get a link to that I think I could actually give making my own covers a shot.

Hi, I own a Super Famicom and 21 games, most of which are in English. I wanted to make some hybrid SFC covers for my collection, so I came up with this new design, inspired by past efforts of other members. Incidentally, I consider my collection to be best SNES/SFC games not available on the Wii U Virtual Console. (Ok, Secret of Mana, Actraiser and R-Type III were on the Wii's Virtual Console, but the inferior PAL conversions are just wrong). Finally, I do own a repro of Star Fox 2, and with the imminent publication of the game on the SNES Mini, that particular cover uses the newly released box art, and it looks fab IMO.
I used Microsoft Paint to make all of these. Please let me know what you think...

That Starfox 2 front image doesn't look bad at all.
So stealing it for "more official" hybrid cover (actually US cover that can easily be modified for semi PAL or semi Japanese cover).
Thank you very many.

Does anyone have SNES vertical covers for Shin Megami Tensei I & II? I need only these, and Romancing Saga 2 to complete by collection! Thanks.
-
I was able to find a hi-res version of Godzilla Kaijuu Daikessen's front cover but unfortunately I can only find the rear cover in low resolution. The rear cover probably wouldn't be too difficult to re-create, but unfortunately I do not know the Japanese language and I certainly can't type a transcription of it from the low res images available.
I'll post the hi-res front cover and low-res rear cover here for the sake of helping out anyone who might be up to the task of re-creating that rear cover. I'd love to have a more authentic looking Japanese Super Famicom cover for this game, so maybe someone out there with really sharp eyes who reads Japanese well can tackle it someday.

I'm not exactly sure where to post these but I guess this is as good a place as any. I've been working on a mini box project for my SNES games and wanted my famicom game boxes to match my NTSC game boxes so I made "NTSC Horizontal Retail" versions of some famicom boxes. These are all UGC size. When possible, I tried to use translated logos / back text but some of the back text was just wrote by me or others I found on the internet. I tried to make them similar to other NTSC releases by the same publisher when I could. I do plan on making at least one more of these (Gokujou Parodius) as soon as Arseen finds his copy to scan :P

I actually made these for my import famicom carts but I just didn't bother changing the for sale location part as I was trying to make them as if they were sold in NA. Although these could be used for repros.
These are actually what I was working on. Covers that fit in cart protectors. Real box in back, my "mini boxes" in front.

Finally tracked down some scans for Gokujou Parodius so I was able to finish the trilogy. Here is a custom "NTSC" horizontal for it.

Normally I don't comment on covers but this one caught my eye and looks great!

Thanks man! It was a fun one to put together. The front cover is crazy already and I was really happy I was able to "fit" it into the US format without losing too much of it. Luckily the manual was scanned too so I was able to pull all of the character art from it for the back.

Looking for the following, prefer non-vertical but will use it if only thing available. For UGC size:
Elfaria
Romancing SaGa
Albert Odyssey
Dragon Knight IV
Aretha II

This is beautiful. Thank you!

Awesome! I'd change the backs to say "For sale in Japan only" though.
English repros...

hi, does anyone have a vertical custom cover for Jaki Crush by chance?
preferrably a little wider to fit BitBox, but i could also just edit a Universal case one
