Title: WiiWare Cover Project
Post by: Lumberjack42 on May 17, 2008, 11:57:38 PM
Okay, since there seemed to be some interest in making covers for the games released on the WiiWare service, I thought I'd try my hand at making covers for them. So here are a few examples (theses are a work in progress) and the template is almost finished.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

Alternate

Lost Winds

Pop

What do you think?

Not bad, but there's a few typos on the FFCC:MLaaK covers. First off, A word is missing in the quote. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not. Secondly, Architek should have a capital A.

Here's a preview of some of the titles I'm working on. One is already released (Defend) and the other two don't have release dates as of yet. However, I've been extremely unsuccessful in getting any art for the last two of the initial six Wii Ware releases: TV Show King and VIP Casino Blackjack.

Defend Your Castle, Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People and Toki Tori

Wow interest in this died a quicker death than Don Johnson's singing career. Oh, well.

Here's a game that was just released today on the Nintendo Channel.

Besides lumber you know that your covers always look fantastic.... ;)

There's still interest there. Personally all I care about is Lost Winds and Star Soldier R which I'll definitely buy. It's just that tomorrow Rock Band for Xbox360 is released in Europe and after I get that I don't know when I'll be able to turn on my Wii again :D

Your covers are still very much appreciated, even if the oppinions differ widely about covers for WiiWare and VC titles.
But I'll "tell it like it is", I like your covers ;)

Yeah, I think you're doing a great job as well. I don't personally see much use for WiiWare or VC covers, but this stuff is all gorgeous. Don't take a lack of replies as a complete lack of interest - I'm sure some people are interested, whether they're vocal or not, and regardless it'll be good to at least have the covers for posterity.

I'm wondering if you could d/l a game, save it on one SD card, then just load it when you want like a regular game. Then , maybe, this endeavor would be worthwhile.

Officially, no.
But you can with some magic, even official games. This is really sad. People doing it in their spare time can do it, but Nintendo can't? :(

That's exactly what I'd love to do with some WiiWare games.... Especially since you can't buy them in retail form they would look sooooo nice on a small SDCard with a printed manual and nice cover.... This way one could store them on his/her shelf just beside the Wii games....

@ Doom
If you mean a modchip with magic then that's not the kind of magic I'd like to cast.... If it's a neat loader trick or sth. like that than I'd be interested....

@Tik

Star Soldier R is indeed a new game. But it's more for the die hard shmup fan. It has only two levels
and instead of a traditional progressive level structure, the game revolves around time attack-style gameplay. You try to rack up as many points as possible in either two or five minute game modes in one of the game's levels.

But, you know, Ikaruga has only 5 levels and you can play through it in about 10 - 15 minutes and it still is a great game :)

You need a copy of an early run of Twilight Princess, and an SD card, but that's it. No opening cases.
Nope, unmodded Wiis, although Nintendo can pretty easily catch you when their records of downloaded VC games don't match your console. Then they could in theory ban your console from online. To my knowledge, this has never been done. You can also use it to run homebrew and emulators (plus games that aren't on the VC yet)
I don't have TP, so I've been trying to mooch one off of my friends ever since this capability was unlocked. I've never done it before, but this looks like a good guide:

But these are ready and good to go.

I think the only cover (other than these and Dante Ali's VC Covers) is the Tekken game for PS3.

Although I may be mistaken.

A while ago someone was working on a template for XBLA games but it never saw the light of day. A shame really with all the potential big hit arcade games to be released this year.

Malicite, you may try to make a post in the general discussion asking about the possible interest in an XBLA or PSN cover project. Maybe one of our cover artists likes the idea ;)

Some games have WiFi Connection features (i.e. Multiplayer, Score Lists, Message boards) and some don't. It's not just StarSoldier R that has none of these features, but Lost Winds and Pop don't as well.

I really like these covers (as well as the GBA ones that will be going on some DS cases ;D). I like having the hard copies in some way, shape, or form. Just wondering if you (or another admin) would be willing to separate WiiWare (and possible Virtual Console covers) from the rest of the Wii games? No big deal either way, but many sites consider them completely different entities.

When WiiWare stuff first came out we decided that we won't make a seperate section for WiiWare games but just upload them in teh Wii section.... Those games are only playable on the Wii after all aren't they? ;)

In other words the Wii Ware boxes are just there for looks.

If by memory card you mean SD card, miniSD card with a SD adapter, or microSD card with a SD adapter, go to Wii settings->data management->channels, then select one and copy it to SD card.

If space is the issue a DS case woul dbe even worse as it's wider than a DVD case ;) If you want a case and save space at the same time I'd say the best way would be either a slim DVD case or a CD case.

USA style DS cases are the same width as DVD cases, but shorter. EUR style are still short, but are wider than the US ones. I don't own any Japanese DS games, just USA and one EUR (Bomberman Story DS) so I'm not sure what style cases they use. I'm assuming Beastman is talking about saving room height-wise ;)

yep. i have shelves that can stack  two ds cases on top of each other, basically since i have so many dvd sets that arnt standard height . but was also thinking the a full size empty dvd case would be a waist of space better used for  for actual game cases lol slim dvd cases sounds like a good idea as well .

I compared a us ds case to a jpn one and they seem to be the same size, just jpn ones feel more flimsy like they were made cheaper.

Is anyone able to make covers for...

Crystal Defenders R1, R2
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

...?
That would be wonderful. Can't let these super games without a cover.

DR. MARIO & GERM BUSTER (wiiware)

Ok This is the other Dr.Mario version thats  around with Dr.Mario Online RX...   this is the only version i can get in my country at this stage and its simular i would say but 'Online RX" is not the cover i would really like to use so i have edited the original cover by deleting the Online RX part and re-drawing in the blue and white squares in the background, i then used an online text maker to give me the new "Germ Buster" text that i used which i thought turned out quite well and for those who are like me and would like this cover instead i hope you like it and will use it....

im not after any credit for this as im not the original cover designer/artist i just re-edited the original to suit various other regional versions of this game

enjoy...... hope you like it

Wii Ware Game Cover Samples

Here are some covers i have been working on, these i am using for now but the resolution is very low so once you print it the text is very blurry and the pictures are not 100% clear, but they will do for now until i improve on them later or someone creates better ones........

TV SHOW KING (wiiware)

I made a cover of Final Fantasy IV The After Years for my own uses.

http://i38.tinypic.com/309uey8.jpg

It's quite bad, has less details and so on... but it's enough for me and my collection.

I still need a cover for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles My Life as a Darklord and Contra Rebirth.
Maybe there's someone out there who would like to make some more professionel covers than mine for those games. :)

I found and modified this one.... not sure i like the cover... but it may do... anyone care to try a new cover for it?

I also found this one but the cover looks too empty.....

anyone care to take a stab at it and modify the cover.... (originals from a neogaf poster named celebi23... thanks to him or her.)

Also there is this one on that forum but its a bit small (posted by a DavidDayton)

I like celebi23's better so i modified to have WiiWare symbol... Can anyone top the cover... back seems fine.

here is one I put together for the game my company actually made.
I had designed a different top then what is being used here. I hope that's all right.
My company was planing to actually use these as a promo item but Nintendo told us we couldn't.

Hey fellas..... I have been working on a new cover for you all..

The cover is for the Max & The Magic Marker game which is kinda simular to Drawn To Life :P...

Anyways I hope you like it and use it... I think it is pretty good. Lucky there were some good hi-res picture online for me to use. The front cover was a promo poster thing and i think it is perfect for the cover for the wiiware game... I am not 100% happy how i placed the back screen shots of the game but i can't be bothered changing it haha.....

anyways here is the sample and you can download the full size cover below the picture

These are really awesome guys, but why don't we make these for the DS cases instead?  I mean you could actually put the game on a small SD card and actually store it in the case.  Unlike the Wii cases where you can't fit an SD card.  I think I'm going to make a DS case for World of Goo and I might redo the Lostwinds cases as well.  It just doesn't make sense to me to continue to make covers for a case that can't even hold the content.

And if you think about it the backs of the wii cases are perfect for the DS because half of it is taken up by all the Nintendo legal copy.  The only thing left to modify is the front cover.

Just my 2 cents, let me know how you guys feel about it.
Title: Re: WiiWare Cover Project
Post by: MedaForce on February 09, 2010, 12:35:37 PM
That's actually not a bad idea, I was actually thinking about this the other day.
Small SD cards are pretty cheap and if you install a game per-card you could have an actual copy of the game in each box.
Title: Re: WiiWare Cover Project
Post by: ShaggyB on February 09, 2010, 01:51:01 PM
only problem with that is the DS games would go side by side with a wii case.... Itd look a bit weird... and if you are like me and have the wiiware games with your regular wii games, it would look quite strange.
Title: Re: WiiWare Cover Project
Post by: Mr.Ben on February 09, 2010, 01:52:07 PM
How well do SD cards actually fit into DS cases btw?
Title: Re: WiiWare Cover Project
Post by: ShoothimNow on February 09, 2010, 03:16:14 PM
Just checked and an SD card fits *fine* inside the DS spot in the DS case.  Reason I say *fine* is because there is alot of room for it to bounce about.  BUT, heh, it fits nicer in the DS case than a regular DVD case.
Title: Re: WiiWare Cover Project
Post by: Strong and Nerdy (formerly tmntfreak7) on February 09, 2010, 03:55:48 PM
It's definitely not the best solution, but better than using a Wii case.  I know it would look strange next to wii cases, but I personally would just put it with my hand held cases.

I would personally prefer it, but either way it's not a big deal, I can always customize the cover to fit for my ds cases.

I actually prefer to use black dvd cases which with the Wii-Ware logo down the spine of the case mixes with original wii covers just perfectly...

Here is a photo i took of an example of what i have done. this is a photo of the second shelf which is where ther wiiware games begin and continues on the 3rd shelf..

Every Wiiware game i have is on it's own SD card with game saves if need be, i bought like 50x 32GB and 50x 64GB SD cards on ebay for an awesome price and each SD card comes with a plastic case which fits nicely in the DVD case where Discs normally go......... i still have heaps of SD cards left ready for future games lol..

That must have cost an absolute fortune!
i've just had the luck of purchasing 170 32mb cards for £140 on ebay, so i think i'm going to put a few snes roms on some of them (for the games with translation patches, but no english release, i can just slip them into the jap box) but that's still going to leave me with loads left over, even after wii-ware! lol  :)

I assume zrodfects meant MB, not GB. As far as I know, 64GB SDXC cards haven't quite hit the market yet. The closest we've had are Toshiba samples which were sent out last November, but there's still a couple of months until they get a proper release.

I have had the same idea for a while in my mind, but space is an issue, so I won't be doing this until some time in the future. I like the idea though and would love to do this for my WiiWare and PSN games.

The back wouldnt be too much work. Shenke did a good job on the cover for Megaman 9 and he could pretty much use the same back and just re-write the game description.

For downloadable games, I've always favored printing out trading card style cards. So you could keep a little binder of them. Maybe that's weird but I think it's a cool idea.
