Title: Game Collecting Software
Post by: csvo2000 on April 04, 2008, 08:46:40 AM
I was wondering as to what game collecting/sorting software you use for keeping track of your mighty game collections?  Do you use a Excell?  What meathod do you use and why?  Thanks

Yep, Game Collectorz is the best commercial software. I used the trial, adding games and info is pretty easy since the program searches for info on amazon and other sites and adds it automatically. The only downside is that you have to add the info for older games (SNES and the like) or games for unpopular systems (3DO, Jaguar, exotic systems like Neo Geo, ...) manually. Which means if you're trying to be as accurate as possible you have to search the net for pictures of your games and info like publisher, release date, upc, etc.

Personally I use a web based solution to keep track of my games. There's a German site called Online Games Datenbank (in English: Online games databank). It basically is like imdb.com just for games. You can add games to your collection, edit the info for a game or add a game to the site which was previously not there. Kinda like Wikipedia. You can generate a link to your collection to show to others which looks like this http://www.onlinegamesdatenbank.de//collection.php?userid=1207.

For the few people on this board who don't speak German ( ;) ) there's a site called http://www.vgrebirth.com which works the same way.

Game Collectorz is a great piece of software and if you use it in conjunction with mobygames abd other sources you've got plenty of stuff to fill in....

For websites I like http://backloggery.com/ . (It's down for maintenance until Monday) Not only can you add anything to your collection, you can keep track of if you have beaten or completed a game (or mark it null if you don't want it taken into your averages for games beaten) and it tells you really clearly how many games you have left on one console or total. Really like it.

I use an online website -- which may not be as detailed as Gamespot, et al., but nonetheless has all the features I need.

http://www.gurulib.com

Its for much more than video games.

Buy a 10 buck cue cat scanner from ebay, and import them all via barcode.

If you have a Mac, there is absolutely NO better program than Delicious Library (http://www.delicious-monster.com/). It's $40, but it's 100% worth it. It has a beautiful interface, and it catalogues not only games, but Movies, Books, and Music as well. It searches Amazon as well, but one awesome feature this program has is that if you have a webcam, you can use it to scan the barcode to enter it in. It works amazingly well, and it has every feature you could possibly imagine wanting. If you can't find your game on Amazon, you can add it in manually, but I haven't had to do that yet.

Plus, the coolest feature (IMO) is the interface. It allows you to view your library in a list form, OR it displays each item's coverart arranged on a shelf.

For your money, this is by far the best program there is. You can check out the free trial on their website, and you won't be dissapointed.

I just want to thank Ketaros and KaiserWAVE for the recommendation of Game Collector. I got it and I absolutely love it. I didn't realize how many games I have......I haven't even entered the vast majority of my retro gaming collection and handheld titles and I'm already at 457 games.

hey!

Nice to hear that, I realize u asked for software not a website, and Game Collectorz is the greatest.. I tryed others.. but none has all functions that GCz has.

Hey, I did by my self a cool skin template for Game Collectorz, want to add on yours?
 - Adds 2 screenshots
 - Adds Box Spines
 - Each console and platform gets a different color style
 - Companies and Websites gets logos
 - Many other features I added by my self...
(The official collector website doesnt acepted cause I made some features by my self..)

A example:

If you want I can send you the files and a explanation to install it.

Looking for another older post I came across this... sorry if its late or whatever... I use Backloggery and FACEBOOK. Yep, there is a nice app on Facebook that lets you add your games to a list and check off 5 things
Collection, playing, favorite, Wishlist, and Finished

as of right now I dont see a TurboGrafx option (but I sent them a message)

The games systems they list to add from are:
Nes, Snes, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Virtual Boy, Wii VC, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, Psx, Ps2, Ps3, PSP, PC, Mac, 3DO, Atari, Sega genesis, Sega 32, Saturn, Dreamcast, Guides, Hardware. and a few that are abbreviated that I don't understand.

I just noticed they already added a TurboGrafx 16 option

I use Delicious Library as well. Again, the entry fee is a bit steep and I originally bought it to catalogue my CDs and DVDs (before they implemented games). But its so nice just to be able to get back from a day second hand shopping and just scan the 10 or so barcodes instead of manually typing everything. Shame its Mac only (I see why as it relies on CoreAnimation and CoreData) but it is pretty cool. I have about 5000 items in at the moment (mostly CDs and DVDs) and its still really responsive. So if you have a Mac I'd give it a look at least.

Oh and being able to export your collection helps with insurance claims. I'd hate if my collection ever got damaged stolen. But at least I know I have a complete list that I could instantly send to my insurance company

I use the backloggery for everything game related, and delicious library when I really feel like micromanaging every detail of my products (and keeping track of manga/comics) The barcode reader sadly isn't as reliable as I'd want, so I have to set aside a whole day that I'm home alone if i ever want to keep track of my comic book collection from years ago (it's in the hundreds D8 )

Yeah, I sometimes find it troublesome to scan in poor light sometimes. However, I found out that Amazon searches all fields including barcode number. So if you add a new item (Cmd+N) and then type in the number under the barcode then it will find it instantly.

For example, if you hit cmd+N and then type 5055060950005 (takes about 2 seconds do read and type once you get fast enough) then it will instantly come up with Resident Evil for the Gamecube.

However, I'm presuming support for comic books is no where near as comprehensive as games, books, dvds and cds.

Hey, does anyone here still use Game Collector Pro? I stopped using it a few months ago because it didn't list the games alphabetically, by system. Does anyone know if this can be done? Maybe I just had an out-of-date version? Any help with this would be nice. Thanks.

I haven't used it some time either. I was never satisfied with searching the net for release dates or publishers/developers. But I know that in the time I used it it listed my games by system and alphabetically. I don't know if it did from the start or if you can adjust it in the program's preferences but it's definitely possible.

Kudos for the heads up about the backloggery. I've been using http://club.ign.com/ (http://club.ign.com/) till now, but I'm switching over to Backloggery now that I know about it.

I had never even considered the concept of commercial game collection software. But since it exists, I may have to look into it. Right now, I'm using an Excel spreadsheet.

How does the Game Collectorz work with older games like Saturn and Sega CD.

Also, what do you do with Gameboy, NES, ect when you don't have the boxes? Can you also access your list online or through PDA?

I use Data Crow, it can goto any one of many (it has scripts that allow you to use various sites) sites like Amazon.com and others for game information.  You can also change anything like the preview pic to your custom lable so you know what to look for.
Also, it is free.

Bump.

I want to update my game collection. My Backloggery has fallen behind. At this point, I've used IGN, CAG, Backloggery, Libra and (IIRC) VGR.

I'm not really tied to any of those, but I want to use the "best" one. The main criteria is it has to track if I have beat a game or not.
