Title: Nintendo N64 cover project UPDATE
Post by: TheValeman on January 13, 2008, 01:42:09 AM
Hi everyone,

We are now waiting on the last cover, [Buck Bumble] puchased recently by wshbrngr, to finally complete the USA N64 cover collection.

Upon completion of the USA N64 cover side of things hopefully we can get the USA N64 labels completed too so if you have N64 carts with nice clean labels please help us out by scanning them at 300dpi and submit them to the site. Dont worry about trimming them etc as I can sort that out  ;D

And maybe our users in Europe and Australia/New Zealand can take up the challenge to obtain all the missing N64 PAL covers?

Only six covers missing? Wow that means the N64 US section could be the first part of our project to be finished.... ;D

Very very nice work valeman and everyone who contributed!!!!

I just tried to ebay a complete Scooby Doo game but you won't believe it htere is not a single complete Scooby Doo 64 for sale now....

Is this game soooo rare?

These are certainly great news! This means that getting all JP and PAL N64 covers will be the next priority right?

I moved this topic to the News & Announcements, I hope you don't mind. I thought it would raise the odds in our favour if people see your post and the last six games we need right away.

Really ... what are the chances someone will buy Elmo's Letter Adventure? ROFLMAO

Still .... we are so close now that hopefully we'll get the traction necessary to complete the US covers.

Gary_Oak asked about PAL & JPN covers? Unfortunately I was the only one submitting PAL covers for a long time there .... hell .... I think that gave the site the initial big push from 6% up to 30% of total completed covers. Since then we have seen covers submitted but they have been small in number compared to the US submissions.

Still .... I will revisit the N64 list to see where we are at with regard to PAL at least!

i'd buy the elmo game, if i could find it with the box for under 20. i found it on ebay, but it was like 50 bucks, and as much as i like contributing, thats a little much, for a game that i will never touch.  i found nhl breakaway and fifa for under 20, and if no one else jumps in and says they have them already then i'll probably buy them by tomorrow.

edit: actually found elmo for about 30, so if no one else offers to get it, or gets it, i'll probably end up buying that too, just not right now.

Sosafan has NHL Breakaway here for $13 in near mint ....

http://stores.ebay.com/Complete-NES-Games-Unlimited_N64_Completes_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ8QQftidZ2QQpZ3QQtZkm

and Power Puff Girls as well .... okay condition .... $16

Thats the problem though .... the harder games to find always have a price attached to them. Supply and demand I guess  ???

Wow!! You grabbed Scooby Doo? That is fantastic news.

In regards to the remaining covers I would like to point out ...

1. I used 4tygames original list as the reference
2. I cross referenced it to the US N64 list pdf released by Nintendo
3. Any ambiguities I checked against EBAY to see if a game was available in NTSC vs PAL

So as far as I can tell the list is accurate. E.&.O.E  ;D

As we are all aware we do have several covers of a somewhat "problematic" nature with sticker damage and Valeman hack jobs done to make them usable. But that is the reality of working with 10 year old material. I'm sure at some point someone will pick up a clean box of such a cover and hopefully they will submit a replacement cover but it shouldn't detract from what amounts to have been a major achievement in completing the USA cover set.

Thank goodness the N64 game list amounted to little over 300 games. Spare a thought for the PSX/PS2...even NES/SNES guys who have in some cases trillions of covers to collect
Title: Re: Major news regarding the Nintendo N64 cover project status
Post by: nate1749 on January 13, 2008, 11:01:23 PM
I believe the 4ty list was initially from a spreadsheet that I made (over 2 years ago geez), which I took from digitpress thru their search engine so I'm sure that list is accurate.

As for the 5 boxes that are left, I msg'ed the guy I used before to see if he had any of those in good condition and hopefully he does and he'll be able to scan em.

Nate

Post by: TheValeman on January 14, 2008, 03:48:20 AM
That's cool stuff Nate.  If he has that's fine and dandy ... especially if they are in good condition. Unfortunately he left stickers on his boxes in some cases so they have needed a lot of work hence the slow going. Still ... beggars cant be choosy eh  ;D

And honestly, I'll be glad to have a rest from all this. It's been something like 2 years of scanning and cover work and continual purchases off EBAY etc. Can't say it's been fun 100% of the time. Still ... someone will ask about working on PAL covers so maybe I'll never get done!!!

BTW ... to everyone out there ..... if you have a scanner please, please consider scanning your labels at 300dpi and submitting them also ... especially nice clean labels ... as we are nowhere near finishing those either. Just scan the cart and submit it and I'll straighten and crop them etc. Cheers !!!!

ok, just bought powerpuff girls, nhl breakaway 99, and fifa 99 off of ebay. i should have them within the month.  that leaves nhl blades of steel 2000 and elmo.  i found elmo, but someone else bought it before i could, and i have not been able to find blades of steel at all. i found it for gameboy color, but thats it, and i found the other years, but not 2000. if someone can find it, let me know.

I hope you don't get in trouble making volume purchases like this. Then again, my wifey never did like my gaming habit so I guess I always was going to struggle after the 100th game or so  :-\

ummm....can anyone confirm that this game was on N64? i just did a google search for it, and it came up with the gamespot site, and according to gamespot, it was only released for playstation and gameboy color.

http://www.gamespot.com/n64/sports/nhlbladesofsteel2000/similar.html?mode=universe (http://www.gamespot.com/n64/sports/nhlbladesofsteel2000/similar.html?mode=universe)

just scroll to the bottom of the page

and according to gamefaqs, it was supposed to be released, but was cancelled. i have found it someplaces, but never with an actual picture of the game.

Blades of Steel '99 was released for N64 and we do not have a cover for that one. I am pretty sure the 2000 edition was only released for PS1.

Complete in box for $9.99 + shipping:

That's cool. It was on the original list so I had no idea it was cancelled. I've removed it from the list. That makes it one to go .... yippee .... probably one less I'd have to convert into a cover anyways  :D

UPDATE: Polaris SnoCross  & Ken Griffey Jr's Slugfest  now uploaded. 4 left to convert apart from the ones we are waiting on....

It isn't on the official Nintendo list of n64 games either.

Looks like they took those PDFs down from their site, glad I saved a copy.

That's great to hear that all the box purchases are finally finished!

Nate

Well .... for the USA games anyway  :D

Actually ... there are a few covers that could do with replacing .... stickers/sticker damage and all that .... but by and large all is well in NTSC land. On the subject of PAL ..... I just converted and uploaded Nevi-G's HSV Adventure Racing .... one of those PAL only games from the land of Oz!!!

Well since the US N64 box collection is almost complete, I got around to scanning in a bunch of Cart Labels that weren't uploaded yet.  Almost all of them are mint and just need cropping.  The Duke Nukem 64 is pretty craptacular and will probably need quite a bit of cleaning up, but it's better than nothing I guess.  I've uploaded so far:

Brunswick Pro Bowling - US
Conker’s Bad Fur Day - US
Dr. Mario - US
Duke Nukem 64 – US
Golden Nugget 64 – US
Hey You Pikachu - US
Hybrid Heaven – US
Iggy’s Reckin Balls – US
Jeopardy – US
Knockout Kings 2000 – US
Lode Runner 3D – US

I also uploaded the rear cart labels for both the US and JPN N64 carts in case anybody needs to make a repo for a damaged label.  I did accidentially identify the JPN label as US when I uploaded it though.

I've got a bunch more scanned, I'll get them uploaded in the next couple of days.

I also noticed that the NASCAR 2000 "PAL" cart label on file is actually the US version.

Yep .... we are waiting on Buck Bumble  and Fifa '99 we will have every single cover for N64 games released in the USA.

What we still do need though is .....

1. Cart labels for USA games.
2. Covers and cart labels for missing PAL games [ Europe/Australia/New Zealand ] etc
3. Ditto for Japan releases.

Now I'm not counting on seeing 2 and 3 completed in any great hurry ... if ever ... but if we can get cart labels for all the USA games so we have a complete artwork collection for USA releases I'll be a very happy person  ;D

how do we scan manuals, and then upload them anyway? is there a certain dpi, or what? just wondering cause i've never seen anyone put forth any real standards or instructions for the manuals.  i'll be glad to scan what manuals i have, just need to know how to do it, and what manuals are already done and just waiting to be uploaded, so i dont spend time scanning something that somebody already has, but hasnt uploaded yet. it may take a while though, since i start college again on tuesday.

Fantastic. Thanks muchly .... I'll get them up when I get home.

As far as manuals are concerned .... wait for a bit as I still have 10 manuals scanned but not yet converted and I need to see if Snowcone got all the others I submitted up & online.

However ... the way I create manuals is ..

1. Scan the pages at 300dpi
2. Straighten then crop them
3. Resize to 1024 x .... .... eg, width is what I scale to...
4. Clean images as necessary
5. Create pdf in Acrobat

That way all my pdf's are consistent with eachother in terms of size and quality. Download one and have a look.

Hope that helps.

Title: Re: Nintendo N64 cover project UPDATE

Well .... this was always going to be the easiest of the major consoles to get all the covers for as it only had 300 odd games released for the USA with maybe another 6 games specific to PAL regions ... Rakuga Kids  and HSV Racing being two of them ... both of those already being submitted already.

Earlier consoles like the TG-16 didn't have that many games either although being older I guess getting artwork is probably that much harder.

Still ... I'll be thankful if we can get all the USA labels finished off so we just have a complete USA art set.

Exactly. What's on the radar after N64 eh Valeman?

To be honest I'm not really sure.

I still want to see the PAL N64 game covers finished as well. I sold the N64 to get the Wii so it's hard finding an incentive to buy N64 games only to lose money reselling them again though. I do have a PSX so I might keep my eyes open for cheap games for that to contribute covers towards that project too.

The big thing tugging at my gaming loins at present is the idea of building myself an arcade cabinet .... and that will cost a fair bit both in time and money. I want it to use an arcade LCD monitor and those aren't cheap at all. That way I can rig one side to use original arcade PCB's while on the other side I can rig up a MAME PC .... best of both worlds. I've started down the path by purchasing some original arcade artwork .... marquee's etc ...

It's going to be a long term project though due to the costs.... mainly the moniter etc...
Title: Re: Nintendo N64 cover project UPDATE
Post by: antony30bc on January 22, 2008, 03:59:47 PM
Why do you want to go LCD? I built a 4 player cabinet two years ago and it was considered blasphemy for anyone to not use an ArcadeVGA card and a Multisync CRT monitor like the Wells Gardner or Betson Imperial.

I sold that cabinet when we purchased the new house and plan on building a 2 player cabinet to replace it. I think the Betson set me back $400 at the time.

I live in New Zealand .... at the edge of the world .... so Wells Gardner isn't a name on our vocabulary here. I had an old Japanese Jamma arcade machine with a 19" vertical monitor but the problem was I could only use in one direction as the screen went funny colours due to the magnetic issues.

As you can now get 19" LCD open frame multisync monitors now I though that would solve that particular problem once and for all. The fact you can plug a Jamma/arcade harness directly into it as well as VGA means I can still use arcade pcbs as well as the PC. If I want to go bigger I guess I'll have to look at a normal LCD monitor although that means dropping arcade pcb support in favor of MAME only ... not something I want to do but pricing may yet become a factor.

I am mulling whether to build a Gauntlet 4 player horizontal cabinet [I have specs for that] or a 2 player vertical cabinet based on the Taito chassis [ I'm trying to get dimensions for that at present] as I have original marquees for Top Gunner and Twin Cobra along with a Top Gunner CPO and PCB. Choices .... choices ....

Wow I have to look into these LCDs, the CRT monitor was awesome for getting the arcade identical graphics on most classics, but I never rotated it for vertical games either, there was a supported resolution which was a good enough compromise.

My first cabinet was a 4 player cabinet designed to support Gauntlet and the 4 player beat em ups such as TMNT, but 4 people rarely played it and I find a certain elegance in a cabinet where the width of the control panel fits within the sides rather than extends out.

Here is an unfinished photo of my old cabinet, I dont have any finished photos anymore but I added a working 4 slot coin door to it.

I was solely interested in MAME/Daphne/Zinc though so didn't have the JAMMA concerns. The monitors I mentioned have a standard VGA attachment.

If I had the space though I'd love to have replicas of the actual arcade machines for a lot of machines, APB, Dragons Lair, etc.

Good luck with your project and have fun.

Posted scans for labels of Ogre battle 64 and Road Rash 64.  Road Rash is a bit rough and would have to be "touched up" significantly.  For Ogre Battle 64 use the one labeled Ogrebattle64_label2.  The other scan did not get sized down.

I just uploaded some scans for :

N64 Cart Labels - U.S.

Fighting Force 64
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine
Mortal Kombat Trilogy

They all seem near perfect and were scanned at 600dpi.  They'll just need a little cropping.

I thought we had the US N64 covers completed?  Where is the cover for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys?

It was thought so, but later it was found that other games existed. We're still so damn close, it may as well be complete. Consider that some of the later games might have had a low print run and we might never find a good enough box to scan.

We're also missing the covers for:

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
NBA Courtside 2 featuring Kobe Bryant

From all the info I have/can find these, and the aforementioned Hercules are the last 3 that we need to finish the US N64 covers.

We have Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

It must have somehow disappeared in the site revamp because I have a copy of the cover on my HDD. Looking at it as I write this  :)

I've just procurred, what looks to be from the pictures, a near mint Hercules: The Legendary Journeys in a lot I just won on the ebay.  I'll get it scanned and uploaded once I receive it.  So with that and the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker that Valeman claims to have on his hdd ;D, the only US cover we'll be missing is NBA Courtside 2 featuring Kobe Bryant.

All right I just won a $6.00 complete "near mint" (according to the description, no pictures) NBA Courtside 2 featuring Kobe Bryant.  So this should be the last one needed for the US N64 covers section in less someone can prove to me that there were other US N64 games actually released that I don't know about.  Fat bloody chance.  >:(

Good stuff Doublebuddy  ;D

I uploaded the Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker cover.

Really weird .... I had to create the title so maybe it never was on here originally as I aren't aware of titles getting dropped off after Snowcone transferred the site. That raises the question ....where did I get it? I honestly haven't got a clue!!!!

Still looking for Hercules The Legendary Journeys. If I can find a complete copy with a good box I will try to buy it and upload the image.

Well I got my N64 NBA Courtside 2 featuring Kobe Bryant which according to the auction was "near mint", but had no pictures.  Surprisingly the complete set is in fact near mint.  I just uploaded the raw scans, so the only game left is Hercules which I already won from ebay on June 2nd and am waiting on the package.  Once I get that, the N64 covers section will be complete.

Done, done, and done.  I just uploaded the raw cover scans of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.  So once these and the scans I uploaded for Courtside 2 featuring Kobe Bryant are magically transformed into completed covers the N64 U.S. covers section will finally be complete.   ;D  Hip, hip, hooray!
