Confusing name.
What ever...
Strategaly they did not mention the 3 big questions:
1: Used games?
2: Always online DRM? Doesn't matter much asa my internet is now stable.
3: DLC only games? it has Bluray drive but... ?
Don't care about backwards combatibility for obvious resons.
-
Yeah they didn't tell the important things... At this pace I'd pick up a new computer before a Wii U, PS4 or XBox One.

Yep just what I was thinking.
Quick we need a Xbox One Covers Section. ::)

Wired got to look at the Xbox one before the conference.
Games install to the HDD meaning that games are restricted to Xbox Live accounts. This means you can't used used games without paying a "fee" that pops up when you don't own the game and try to install it.
What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.
Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.
But what if a second person simply wanted to put the disc in and play the game without installing – and without paying extra? In other words, what happens to our traditional concept of a “used game”? This is a question for which Microsoft did not yet have an answer, and is surely something that game buyers (as well as renters and lenders) will want to know.

So, Xbox 1 should always be called "Original Xbox" to keep from being confused I guess. The funny thing is when 360 was announced I saw something that said they didn't want to sound inferior to PS3 by calling their machine Xbox 2 but now Xbox One doesn't sound inferior to Playstation 4? They did say launch is later this year and seems like systems always launch in November so that's a pretty good bet.

I think Germans will save us Europeans at least:
http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/02/01/valve-sued-by-german-consumer-group-because-steam-users-cant-resell-games/
Hopefully The Federation of German Consumer Organizations (VZVB) wins as that would most likely prevent the fee as well.

Ya, this is getting rediculous...
old school gaming... Here I come.
-
I don't care about online, I don't want to watch sports on my console, I don't care about Kinect, I don't need to record my gameplay and post it to facebook and twitter ...
I just want the thing to play good games.
Good thing is there's enough in the pipeline for PS3 and lots of older games I still don't have that I could put off getting an Xbox One or a PS4 until they are very cheap and have built up some decent libraries.
Only thing that could get me to get one would be if FF vs. XIII is renamed XV and available at launch.
-
At this point I'm much more interested in the RetroN5 then either the PS4 or Xbox One.
-
Yep still many great SNES and NES RPGs to go thru.
And still many ones waiting translation.
-
The voice commands and hand waving are neat and I'm sure the new games will look good, but if I can't play the xbox360 and xboxlivearcade games I've already paid for then forget it. The fact that 360s have such a short lifespan irritates me when I think that someday I won't be able to play my xbox360 library of over 40 games. What the hell am I going to do with my red ringed 360 and all my games in 2020? I want to be able to play my old games until I'm dead.
-
Short life span? I think not. It's been over 7 years since it was released, that's well over the average console lifespan.
Back on topic. Yes, fuck the Xbox, fuck Microsoft. I'm not going to pay twice for used games. Halo and Gears of War are not enough to justify buying a new console worth 500-700 euro.

By lifespan I mean how long the xbox360 lasts before it red rings and dies.
-
Fair enough. I bought my Xbox back in 2007, it's still running fine. Probably could do with a clean, but its in fine working order.
-
I bought at launch and I've had a couple die on me. The SNES and PS2 are still going strong though.
-
I have had 3 PS2's in my lifetime, and 2 PS3's, though in fairness I got the second for free!

I need to ask you something anyway! PM will be sent.

Ok, I'm officially confused.
I will be required to install games to the hard drive and thus marry the games to my machine? The only way the "disc" could know that it was married is by having the machine check against a database via the web. So it sounds to me like you MUST have a live account in order to play games at all and that it very likely needs to be connected at least a portion of the time to check for such things ???
Is there no option to stick game in, turn on machine, play game at all anyomore?
I'm going to order my Ouya now...

They might keep things similar to how it is now with gold and silver memberships...just as long as even being silver you have it connected to the net.
Also...MS is giving out a $10 voucher on their online store. If you go to microsoft.com go to "shop" and click on Xbox One you should get a screen where it asks to register your email address to receive a notification to preorder the console. If you register your email they'll send a voucher code to that email to be used in the store.
I got my code already but due to the huge amount of traffic a lot of people are saying that orders are getting cancelled or aren't going through...so i'm giving it a day or 2 before I try it myself
--edit--
found this also
http://majornelson.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-and-used-games/
keywords though... " there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile." So there might be issues playing "your" game on someone elses profile
As for the always online, It doesn't really concern me since I have both my xbox and ps3 hardwired to the net so i'm "always connected" already but I did not like the whole "need to sign in an hr a day" thing...if I'm already connected at all times to allow the xbox to do everything while the system is "off" then I just don't understand the need to turn it on and sign on every day. But I guess this is their way of "forcing" the multimedia aspect of the system and having you connect whatever tv service you have directly to the xbox instead of directly to the tv.

So if there is a fee for used games, what will this do to the game renting market?
Unlike DVDs and Blu-Ray movies that make a "rent" version, currently companies that rent game are in fact renting a retail disc. So if MS is going to charge a "fee" it is likely that this will be the case with rental games too. This means that people that rent a game will have to pay twice, once to the renter and again to MS.
I know that most of us here are collectors and the chances of renting a video game are low, but that is not the case with the general population, like many families out there.
Also this will kill the age old tradition of kids inviting friends over to play video games and having the friend bring some of their games.
BTW.... unrelated to my comment.... Sony stock jumped 10% the moment the MS press conference ended... WHAT DOSE THAT TELL YOU????

I personally hate buying anything used. Gamestop charges $55 for a $60 game, I'll pay the extra $5. Plus I almost always know what I want before they come out so most games I will get the day they release. No one mentions anything about the NFL, well for Americans this could be huge considering for the past decade satellite company DirecTV has had a monopoly on the NFL and charges a ridiculous amount to watch games and a 2 year contract. Blu-ray is amazing and now I no longer need an Xbox and a 3D blu-ray player. I think you guys are just old guys and can't embrace change! Did you not see the comparison video of detail from MW3 and COD Ghost? Huge I mean HUGE difference! I personally will get it on launch!

Nope not any more dear friend. Microsoft wants to force its collective dick down your throat and then thank them for doing so. Plus you must pay a fee to play used games, so after a forced blow job, you must turn around, bend over, and let their drinking buddies (specifically Bungie and Epic) take their turn on you. Man if you think that's bad, wait until Apple stick their ugly fucking nose into the gaming market.

I said this in another post when there were rumors about it being always online and people were saying they weren't gonna get it: overreaction to something we don't know everything about. I probably won't be getting this day one only because I think it will be very expensive but I am excited to see what else is in store. When the Dreamcast came out almost 15 years ago I didn't pay attention/didn't want it until I played it at Target the day it came out and had to have one. If it has amazing games on it that are better than the versions on PS4/Wii U or even exclusive people will buy it even if it has some stupid DRM like features.

I'm all for better graphics and improvements in technology. That's change I can embrace. Paying a fee for used games and being required to register them online? No thanks. I'll probably pass on this system.

Okay I'll give you the registering online is bogus but how is paying a fee for used games any different than what EA does with sports titles or Battlefield or what WB does with Mortal Kombat? They all require an online pass so if you buy a used version of any of those games you have to buy the pass, same thing. Of course I am referring to online multiplayer games.
-
EA (I think?) just recently said they were gonna stop doing the online pass. Either they are admitting it was a bad idea, or they knew Microsoft was gonna do it and decided not to completely gouge it's customers.
-

But we know about it now. Something's aren't as bad as expected, and some other things are a hell of a lot worse. I'm still not getting it. I have no plans to buy an on-line subscription, and considering you need to be on-line to register the game, that's 50 odd euro that I'm tied down to spend every 14 months. Kinect is also mandatory, something I have no interest in, so that's another extra expense their bundling with the console that I don't need/want. No used game (now days) are worth their retail price, plus an addition fee, which will likely be 10-20 dollars.
Where is the overreaction in comment? Who are you to tell people their overreacting?
If I'm honest, I'm happy that their doing this. I'm saving 500 - 700 euro by not buying it!
-

Well they have just been voted the worst company for two consecutive years.
-
Well I don't play games online, almost without exception. The only game I've played online in the last 5+ years was Journey, and that was because it simply did it on its own ???
I'm sure GameStop is gonna be happy about this. Sell new for $60, used game comes in, but will require new owner to pay $10 (or whatever it ends up being), now GameStop can't charge $50-55 used becaus the would inflate the price to over new retail for the customer. So, the pay less for used games, turning off potential sellers (which is where they make their money, as we all know), and end up selling the used games that they take in at lower prices.
Basically, Microsoft wants to sell the games new AND used. Crafty fuckers. The only upshot I can potentially see is that used game prices may end up on the really low side just because of the hassle involved with making them work. On the other hand, people are sorta stupid, and used Xbox1 games might sell for what ends up being new retail prices or more on eBay.
As I've said before regarding this subject, I won't buy anything like this, be it PS4 or Xbox1, until its been hacked so that I do NOT need to register my life away online to play a fucking video game offline. I sincerely feel that this is a terribly poor (and greedy) business model.

I don't buy EA games for this reason. I did hear that they recently dropped the whole online pass thing, but I'm still iffy about their products and business practice in general. I can definitely do without microtransactions..

Glad I am not a big xbox fanboy but I did watch the conference today.
Overall, I am not impressed. It totes some neat things but ultimately they are trying to take on too much and overlooking the main reason they sell systems. The system looks completely large, so long gone are the days of carrying your system over to a buddy's for game night.
It will be a good system in the technical sense but to me they are taking away the appeal to gaming consoles
-
While the press conference was kind of a failure with the extreme lack of games, I'm sure that the console will have all the multi-console titles and at least one exclusive. But I'm just not excited for either console right now, maybe when a God of War, Halo, or some other exclusive license is announced I might have some enthusiasm.

I just think people saying they won't (or will for that matter) buy this or PS4 based on the teasers we've seen are overreacting. We still have not seen any gameplay or played the games for ourselves. I did say in that post that I probably won't buy it because I'm sure it will be very expensive. I want to see more and play it myself before I make a decision and think some people who are saying they won't get it now are being hard headed and should wait until it's out to make a final decision.
-
I wont buy ... I dont need another entertainment center my tv already does most of the stuff i need, i dont need skype either or to surf the net when im watching a movie, i like buying used games because of the deals u can find on them on ebay & craigs ... What happens when this xbox RED RINGS on my ass do i have to pay again to play all my games again.? This sucks, this xbox if not gear towards a real time gamer but a new or occasional gamer that probably will be using the gaming aspect less that any one he would....

Pfft Xbox One, PS4 its all about the Retron 5!!!
http://hyperkin.com/blog/2013/03/retron-5-details-revealed-from-the-midwest-gaming-classic/
-
Personally the XboxOne is kind of a "meh" for me at the moment. I feel like i should be in the honeymoon faze where my excitement is blinding me of the flaws the system has (what usually happens). I've felt it with every console announced since the beginning but this one isn't really generating a whole lot of personal excitement ... AND i actually played my 360 most out of this past generation.
We shall see what E3 can do to try and sway me to pick one up at launch.
I think you guys are just old guys and can't embrace change! Did you not see the comparison video of detail from MW3 and COD Ghost? Huge I mean HUGE difference! I personally will get it on launch!
Umm ... are you trolling us?
Its not that no one wants to embrace change, its that the change is going to cost the consumer much more in the long run per game. Just an educated guess but i would say half of the games people buy are pre-owned. With a fee associated with a pre-owned product arises then gamers will in turn end up simply spending more money. This whole 'extra fee for used games' thing is convoluting things so badly its quite a turn off. Personally i probably buy 5 new games a year and the rest are all pre-owned. I like the feeling of getting a good deal every once and a while plus some games i do have the desire to play but i simply don't think they are worth the premium they cost new (ie: most fighting games ... I'm not paying $60 for one, no way!).
Cod of Duty comparisons. Uh yeah a game that was made two years ago should look terrible in comparison to a brand new game. Especially when its on new hardware and the company who makes the games has more money to pour into R & D than they know what to do with. ;)
EDIT: Spelling/autocorrect errors

"Just to confuse matters even more, Microsoft's Phil Harrison has suggested that if you 'loan' a game to a friend they'll have to pay effectively the full price of the game to unlock it on thier console.
Basically when you buy an Xbox One game, you'll get a unique code that you enter when you install that game. You'll have to connect to the Internet in order to authorize that code, and the code can only be used once. Once you use it, that game will then be linked to your Xbox Live account.
"It sits on your hard drive and you have permission to play that game as long as you'd like," Phil Harrison told Kotaku."
Presumably this means that those of us who have a games room, and a current gen set up in the lounge would need 2 licenses for any game we want to play on 2 machines? If they are trying to market this as an all in one entertainment system, then I would assume they would like people to have more than one console in the house. Plenty of people these days have a man cave, home cinema room, games room, etc. I really don't think they have thought this through logically. Someone in their r&d department needs to be fired.
As a side note, I think the hardware looks gorgeous. And seems they fixed the d-pad too
-

This for sure. ;D
-
i keep saying to myself, "im not gonna get one"
but then halo 5 will come out and so i'll have to have one!
also, isnt a lot of the stuff there trying to do similar to what they tried with the 360?
-
I know i will end up getting one, as i'm like a magpie to shiny things when it comes to electronics. But it wont be at launch, and it wont be until they stop contradicting themselves in interviews. lol.
-
Looks like I'll wait until there is an exclusive that I can't go without playing before buying any of these 3 newer systems.
Wii U = Zelda
PS4 = maybe a GoW game
360 = possibly a Fable game.
I haven't been wanting to play ANY games lately.....not sure why.
-
The last Fable game sucked something hard...

Based on what I've been reading it sounds like the game is more so tied to your live account than your actual hardware. Meaning that playing the same game on multiple machines in one house is possible.
I may be wrong, but that's what I got out of it.
-
I've never been an X-Box fan, and seeing all these newfangled systems with ultra-high prices tags is sickening. I already have a Blu-Ray player, so HD isn't something I need in a console. Plus, downloadbale exclusives like restored arcade classics tick me off. Bill Gates should've left gaming alone. :(
-

That's actually way bigger problem thwen, the fuck I'm letting my siblings or nephews use my account. ;)
-
It IS account based. That means anyone with multiple account on their X-Box will NOT be able to play games between accounts without paying the fee. This new X-Box is a load of crap. I don't care what it does or what games it has. I won't be buying it out of principal. They are taking away control from the consumer little by little. It's going to hurt the rental industry and the used game sellers. I think everyone should boycott this damn thing and I feel that anyone that buys it is a fool.
-

It's a pretty nice looking box, but the dust collector at the top (giant mess of slats/vents), ugh, that'll be fun to blow out with canned air every 3 days :(

That's cool. Your entitled to your opinion brother. I shall not be getting it.

i loved the press conference. everything was just as bad as you'd expect. way things are looking, we're now getting one entry this gen that will just be a lightning rod for everything and everyone i don't want to be associated with. hopefully that just leaves more room for sony and nintendo to step it up.
if that came across as fanboyish, i apoligize. i just don't like what the industry has become and this new device can potentially channel a lot of that away from my favorite hobby. since all the hardware players are trying to break out of the console gen cycle to stay relevant in the face of new tech, hopefully they'll all have their own sort of crowd and it'll be much easier to decide which platform is relevant for your product.
-
I think you guys are just old guys and can't embrace change! Did you not see the comparison video of detail from MW3 and COD Ghost? Huge I mean HUGE difference! I personally will get it on launch!
Umm ... are you trolling us?
EDIT: Spelling/autocorrect errors
LOL! Embracing change since the 4th generation personally.

I was really high on this thing when they said my 84k gamerscore would carry over...and that high really crashed when all the reports came out about not allowing used games. Or allowing them, but charging a hefty fee to play them.
I have been 360 all the way this gen, but if PS4 allows used games with no bullshit (as they have hinted at, but may change), then I am headed back to Sony.
Personally, the 2 machines are going to be so on par with each other, the used game thing will make or break for me. I don't give two shits about any other features besides games. TV? No thanks. Blu ray? Got one. Porn aps? You know they'll be there.
*sigh* I remember when game systems played games. That's it. Good times.
-
I just found out that fee, will be the same cost as the damn game would cost you new. I just keeps getting better and better. Phil Harrison and Microsoft can piss right off.

If the PS4 allows used games with little to no restrictions, it will win.
I also remember when Game Consoles played games. My PS3 is a great media center, and it plays some great games as well. Games first, media second.

Playing Games do come first, I just watched about half of the unvailing of the xbox one and quite frankly it just made me want to punch everyone that was talking about it on the tv.
I don't give one shit about watching tv and flipping through channels or espn. I mean seriously?! Why?!
Games then dvd's/Blu rays. That's all that most people want and all that I want and need.
Even with all the claims of piracy, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo still make so much money off of thier products there shouldn't even be any worry. They don't need all the extra money from "used" games on top of what they've already sold.
I mean sure it's cool that all these features are crammed into a pretty sweet looking machine, but the cons are bad enough that this system is going to be a pile of shit and I really hope that they have many problems and lack of sales.
I don't care if there is a "good" game coming out for this system, It does not justify buying the system if there is no resale market.
I will NOT buy this and support them UNTIL they decide to step back to the way it should be.
Truth be told, I have no interest in any of the new systems.
There I feel better now.

So... no backwards compatibility, my digital xboxlivearcade content will NOT carry over (I've spent a few hundred on this shit; I feel like such a sucker now), no used games, and always online. It makes sense now seeing how EA is all buddy buddy with MS and passing the microphone to one another at the presentation. Fuckers.

Remember when Sony hinted that they would be doing this on the PS3, and everyone threw a fit? Was Microsoft paying attention? Did they not get the memo?
I for one will be saving my money. I may or may not get a PS4, but I definitely won't get a One.

It's 100% accurate. As a gamer the whole event was like watching paint dry.
-
I honestly was sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out who at Microsoft thought the whole online requirement and used game fee/tying games to one account thing was a good idea and something gamers should be excited about... Did no one in the various meetings that were held to design this thing not see how that could seriously alienated a HUGE portion of their target audience? It's kinda of baffling really.
I'm gonna try not to judge too swiftly. At least not until we have all the facts about the XBoxOne (and PlayStation 4, for that matter). However, one thing I can say for certain is that at this point, I'm finding it hard to get real excited for either of the next generation systems. Time shall tell...

They don't seem to realise that people who buy used games generally will not, or cannot afford to buy new. And a lot of people who do buy new, buy it with the option of reselling it. People will be way more hesitant to drop 40-60 on something that has little to no resale value the moment they leave the store. Game sales will fall through the floor.
I truly believe they are going to launch a digital distribution channel that gives you a temporary licence for a cheaper fee. The connecting once a day thing just seems too odd. Trying to finally give people the push away from physical media, and take out a massive amount of jobs, businesses and enjoyment from the gaming industry, for a larger slice of the pie! No physical media, no used sales for people to cry about. Play the game cheaper on Xbox than ps4, fanboys praise them. If this is their intention I hope it falls on its ass. However I am reserving judgment (and as said above, I will probably end up with one), it's a powerful bit of hardware, and I am sure they will have the option of changing most of these things with firmware updates if they see sense. And if they don't, I'm sure someone will hack it - although I am guessing once that happens it will lose all the tv bullshit that nobody really wants anyway.

Yeah, that makes sense that there's going to be some angle behind it. They'll find some way to spin it to make it sound like it's really a better deal all around. I don't like what I'm seeing so far one bit, but I'm curious to see what kind of spin they put on this to make it sound like the future of gaming and acceptable.

Don't underestimate the stupidy of people.
Many already buy retail games from Live at full price.
Same price for DL copy and hard copy.
Can't resell the DL copy. ;D

Yup, same on PSN and Wii store - but i really cant imagine that it's a big slice of the market. I imagine its more kids who get vouchers for their birthday, and just cant wait for the latest COD/FIFA/whatever.
I think it's a shame that future generations of kids might not have the excitement of saving up for a game, and going into a store with wall to wall games, and getting to browse them in person. Hearing what other people are buying, and saying about the games, talking to the staff, seeing the posters, and even playing some. That was part of the fun - looking at the manual and box while waiting to get home and play it. What they are aiming for seems to be see video, click buy, wait 2 hours while it downloads, wait half an hour for install, wait another hour for updates, play game. Oh....it's not as good as the video looked......

To be honest, I've bought a total of three games on the PSN, those being Journey, The Walking Dead, and Dissidia 012. I have bought about 10 games on the Wii's Virtual Console, the vast majority of which I already own the physical game. I think it's a convenient service, but saying that, bar a quick way to buy expansions and having a chance to play some rare games, its a novelty. The one thing that I'm really happy about is the chance to play Hammerin' Hero and Hexyz Force now.
-
I really hope people don't buy this thing.
No used games is terrible and it seems that lending a game will become obsolete as well.
Also on IGN it mentioned that you have to pay the same full fee if you want to install a used game on your xbox.
It makes owning a physical version almost pointless as if it wasn't bought new it's kind of useless.
If people vote with their wallets and don't purchase this crap then the industry will react accordingly.
Unfortunately it's just a matter of time before it goes 100% digital since today's generation of kids are growing up used to buying things digitally.
If they want to go digital and lock things to one account, etc. then they need pass some of the savings on to the customer.
A digital release should never cost the same as a physical copy.
Also I've stopped purchasing digital only games since it seems that they will be useless in 5-6 years as new hardware comes out and they blame it on "a different architecture" but I you can bet the digital games from last gen will show up on the current gen online shop for full price again.
So if you want to keep your old arcade games you can't trade in your old hardware.
I don't think they realize that many rely on reselling things to afford the new stuff.
When Xbox Two comes out people won't be able to sell their Xbox One and software since the software will be useless as the sellers account will be transferred over to Xbox Two

Actually after long thinking I did finally come up with scenario that would get me have the new Xbox as it currently is: If someone gives me the console for free and the games cost less than 10 bucks new.
New unopened games only thank you, I don't want to pay the activation fee.

Foresight: you have it.
With all the news that's been trickling out, I fear for the future of "serious" gaming. I hope Sony makes the most of Microsoft's idiocy and that maybe, just maybe, Nintendo can push their way back to relevancy.
I absolutely will NOT buy this machine. Between the required big brother connection, kinnect connection required (why, seriously?), and ZERO used game market, I am so beyond put off. And, like so many of you, I don't need or want yet another "all in one" entertainment box. My living room isn't "cluttered" with "too many devices" as they suggest. Who's is anymore? This isn't the late 80's when people had their wi-fi, tape deck, turn table, CD players, VCRs, with massive tower speaker setups etc. all stacked up on some massive rack. That shit's all been so consolidated and reduced in physical size at this point.

If they stop focusing on gimmicky shit, and start focus on the spec's of their consoles and quality of their games and licensing, they just might become "relevant" again.

This.
Why they prevented playing NSMBU with Pro Pad?
One stage reguires motion control.
So why did they not add motion controll to Pro Pad then?

Here's what the cases are going to look like if anyones interested. Actually looks pretty nice IMO. Looks like they're taking the Blu-Ray/PS3 sized case route.

Well, they are bluray discs after all. Green bluray cases. Meh. Nothing to get excited about as far as I'm concerned.

Ah, green, the stereotyped color of puke, which is all i want to do when it comes to the XBOX ONE. I'm just going to refer to it as the XBOX DONE (WITH IT).

No, but I'm glad that it's not just another DVD sized case. I'll bet Sony does something similar, like a smoke colored blu-ray case.

Unless they do a 180 with the One's used game policy. I will not be buying that mess of plastic and silicone that could have served a better purpose.
As an after thought on that. So much for Gamefly.

A point I brought up before, and a good point my friend reminded me of. Once the servers for Xbox One go down, does that mean you'll be able to register anymore games? Will you even be able to play games on the fucking machine?
I hope people have enough sense not to buy this awful box trap. I hope Epic and 343 Industries have the sense and loyalty to their fans, to realize that this is an awfully stupid idea, and try to get out of that contract.

Why would they do that?
They can just resell you your Xbox One games on the Xbox Two
The problem with M$ is that although they are a very successful company they only think about the bottom line. I don't blame companies for this as they have to stay in business and hit financial targets to keep investors happy. My issue is this is all they (investors) focus on. It's all quantitative measures such as profit, sales, DLC revenue, etc.
They miss the qualitative measures such as public opinion, customer satisfaction, customer experience, ethics, etc.
Their needs to be a balance, but unfortunately, the qualitative measures usually don't help an executive hit their bonus targets since their bonus is likely tied only to financial performance.
I really hope this system tanks hard so that the negative financial impact shows them that being greedy and trying to "nickle and dime" your customers doesn't pay off in the long run.
I suspect it will sell well though because the majority of the market (the people that buy the annual COD, NHL, Madden, etc.) see gaming as consumptive entertainment much like going to a movie. They don't collect and don't buy games to replay a long time into the future as there will always be the newest installment waiting for them every year.

We're talking about 10 years or so into the future. They would probably just send out a firmware update that would allow you to play games without this process since it would no longer be able to be put online.

If it is not backwards compatible which I assume it won't be then there is no money to be made so yeah I think that is exactly what they would do and people will get upset all over again because ten years after the system came out it would finally be the way it should have been the whole time.

Exactly, there's no reason for them to. There's nothing in it for them. Fully expect that sucker to become a brick.

I'll be honest. Of all the things that bug me about this system, like Used Games, Kinect, the damn TV...backwards compatibility doesn't bother me in the slightest. Does anyone actually use that after a few months? I have a fully backwards compatible PS3, and I think I've played 2 games on it. I always just hook up my PS2 and play with that instead...better controller. Same thing with Xbox 1..I mean Xbox Classic. The damn black and white buttons are different for 360 (which wont even play half the games) so again, I just plug in that old, black, 20lb brick.
Let's think about this...in reality, the only system that was ever truly backwards compatible was the PS2. That's it.
Snes didnt play NES, Genesis/MD didnt play master system, DC didnt play anything else...
The PS2 was it.
And to this day I STILL play my PS1 games predominantly on my PS1

I'm with ya on this one. It's the one serious gamer gripe that I hear all the time and simply don't get. I seriously couldn't care less. Not to mention that transferring save files isn't always an option when there is BC, and the whole new controller thing like you mentioned.
-
I always think of backwards compatibility as a bonus, not a necessity.
-
I also couldn't care less about BC either. I prefer to play on original hardware.
-

This, unless the BC like X360 where they updated the graphics.
-
That's what I like about BC. I play my Gamecube games on my Wii because the component cable is so damn expensive and PS1 games look better on an HD TV upscaled through a PS3. I can't imagine 360 games would look better on Xbox One so it's not needed.
-

Yep, remasters are nice!

I, personally, disagree with this completely. Well, the PS1 part. Some games do look pretty nice upscaled, FMVs especially....but games that are very dated and pixelated, like Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, WWF Warzone...all of these look like crap anyway, and on my LED with 1080p and 240htz, they just look worse. N64 is the same way. That was an awkward era, the birth of real 3D games, and it just doesn't seem to transfer well to HD.
Gamecube does look pretty nice via HD, but I still hate plugging everything into the Wii, basically because I cant stand the menu screen.
-
Numbers don't lie. After Microsoft's unveiling of the seemingly terrible Xbox One, Amazon UK reported that Nintendo Wii U sales jumped 875%. In ONE DAY.
So bravo, all you European shoppers
-
I love Backwards Compatibility, I like having one piece of hardware that can play my games, instead of multiple consoles, and multiple power strips arranged as to not cause a fire. That is why I was pissed when Microsoft stopped doing BC for the 360, so many of my games can't be played, and my Original Xbox (cant call it the Xbox 1 now, can I, Microsoft, f** you and your screwing up my nomenclature for my consoles) is borked (the DVD drive is busted, and cant find a suitable replacement).
I Do honestly think the barring of used games (pretty much did in all reality with that fee) is going to hurt developers that are exclusive to the Xbox. Say for example, there is a game that has a sequel coming out, and you want to try the first game to see what it is like, also since it is older it should cost less, BUT it's OoP..and the only way to get it is used. People do not usually buy a game day one, at full price unless they are fans or know what they are getting into. Nintendo got my money from Fire Emblem because I played the first GBA game used.
-
I really want to claim that I simply won't buy an Xbox One, but as soon as Halo 5 comes out I'll be running to the store and throwing my wallet at the clerk. I'm such a tool.
-
I'm going to honest.
Before disc drives became the norm in gaming consoles, backwards compatibility wasn't generally needed. Cartridge based system had less moving parts, which as a result meant less wear and tear, as we have all seen, with some of us owning working consoles nearly 30 years old. With disc drives, there are more moving and delicate parts, meaning things generally live a short life span. When hard drives where introduced into consoles, there life span was cut even further. Corrupt files systems, bad sectors, the list goes on.
When production stops of these consoles, were royally screwed. It's a matter of time until the games we own are nothing but fancy tea coasters.
How many PS1-2-3's have you gone through? Personally I have been through 7 between the three, yet I still own a Sega Mega Drive that is over 20 years old, and a N64 that is over 15 years old.
I have been lucky with my Xbox 360, but how long can I expect that to last? I can assure you that I'll be buying another one before the Xbox One comes out. I'll keep it sealed and boxed until my first one eventually presents me with the dreaded "yellow light of death".
In the age of disc drives, backwards compatibility has never been so necessary.
Back in the day, cartridges where outshone by discs, due to storage, cost, and the amount of memory a disc can store over a cartridge, now days, there's little to no reason to start using cartridges again, bar the cost factor. Generally a 100gb Sony cartridge would set you back 66 euro, with a game on top of that, that's 100 euro minimum.
By the way I'm not saying we should start using cartridges again. I guess I'm just thinking out loud.
With a Blue Ray discs holding a maximum of 25gb per layer, I would reckon a 10gb cartridge would hold the average game, and leave enough storage to hold a few save files. If you look at The Elders Scrolls V Skyrim, the game as I understand takes up 7gb (with mods) on a hard drive. My save file after 211 hours and completing everything wasn't much more than 15mb. It could work?
You could then argue that hard drives would become redundant, therefore removing them from consoles, and therefore cutting the costs of production, but then again, you have to look at how important digital downloads are, and how much you want to offer your customers, but does a gamer really want to use the PS3 or Xbox 360 as a storage device? A dumping ground to photo's and video's that you'll never likely look at? If your using a computer, you likely have an external hard drive, a hard drive that is likely over a few hundred gig's, if so, you already have a perfectly good dumping ground.
I think digital downloads are important enough to have some sort of method for downloading a game or what not onto a built in storage device, but are they important enough to warrant a hard drive? Would a memory chip or flash drive not be enough, with the ability to copy the files over to an external storage device? Of course you could argue that you would then have to spend money of a FAT32/ NTFS/ EXT3/4 formatted hard drive, but would that cost not be worth it, considering you are less likely to have to buy a new console *IF* there wasn't an internal hard drive, and *IF* the system was cartridge based.
Any of you who have no idea how a hard drive works, probably missed my point there.
As I said before, this isn't something I definitely want. I'm just thinking out loud. The mumbling's of a fool really.
EDIT: I'm well aware that a lot of faults with current gen consoles are due to the heat generated by the CPU and lack a sufficient cooling method, and that the thermal compound Sony and Microsoft use is crap. You can help this by replacing the existing thermal compound with a decent quality paste. You would be surprised by how much this actually helps.

Backwards compatibility for me is a non issue. It's everything else that is the deal breaker.
-
talked with some tech-savvy people a few years back how the future would be smart tvs and cloud-computing. still think we were right, but smart tvs are held back for some reason while the cloud, sadly not being a viable solution to anything as of yet, is used more as an excuse to forego bc (ps4) and force always-on under the guise of server processing (sim city, xbone).

I'm with you. I don't dump my consoles when the new hotness comes out, they are kept in my collection just like everything else.

Guess we (I mean all of internet) scared M$:

Read update 2.
It still rumors that the reseller has to be M$ aprroved...

So, Microsoft will be setting the used price values? That's laughable. I can see 1,000 copies of Madden '14 for $55 sitting on Gamestop's shelves from now until eternity if that's the case. Plus, can you imagine retailers getting just 10% of a used sale?! That's less than the margin on new, and new takes ZERO work to sell versus used, making used retail worthless to the likes of GS.
Also, the proposed system means no selling on ebay or amazon, since you won't be going through their fucking bullshit "cloud-enabled Azure pre-owned technology" system. Give me a fucking break. Go Microsoft! Exploit the people who WANT to spend money, not the hackers who you are afraid will steal your money (and they FUCKING will with record speed I bet).
Nothing about this proposal makes me feel ANY better about the X1 >:(
-
Glad that the M$ plan is illwegal in Europe.
M$ cannot dictate who can resell their games.
It against both the monopoly laws and misuse of dominant position on market.
-
Yup. I know Sony's been in litigation regarding the sale of PSN accounts and games purchased via the PSN for a while now in the UK, since they've basically been told that users MUST be able to sell their digital-only games on their own and without interference from Sony.
We have laws that cover that, but Sony and the gang have craftily sidestepped them or simply haven't been called out by a large enough authority (yet). I foresee some new DMCA stuff going into effect at some point soon...

Xbox One? More like Xbox Done. >:(

I doubt it. Court verdicts and Congress have been leaning heavily in favor of manufacturers over consumers these last couple of years. Companies like Microsoft have enough money to toss at lawyers and lobbyist to gain the favor they want. Only in America can you buy something, own it, and still not have the right to do what you want with it.
-
This thread has been a great read, and I agree with what what many of you are saying. I also have no plans on buying this at all. However, I wonder if many being so sure that it will fail is because we are all like minded and agreeing with each other and reading websites that are also of like mind, but are in the minority. Hardly any kind of full evidence, but I work in a big IT office with a lot of average "non-video game nerdy" thirty-something dudes who all own 360s. Every time I have brought this up, every single person I talk to says, "well of course I plan on buying the new one" and when I bring up the concerns that have been beaten to death by the likes of us it is met with confusion. They don't care. I'd like to see this system fail but I don't know if it will and I'm curious to see how it all plays out.
-
Well this sums up the Xbox One for me. HAHA ;D

Apparently region locked too ... Not looking too good and I can't see them securing any exclusives that I'll need to play.
I only bought a 360 because of the Mistwalker games (Blue Dragon / Lost Odyssey) initially and I can't see something like this happening with xbox one. JRPG exclusives will be for the PS4.

I would have to agree with you, except the fact it's been going on a lot longer than a few years now.

So, as I've stated before, I am not in the "I am definitely not getting this" camp just yet. I need to see more before I make a decision (like price and actual gameplay footage). However, I am really getting sick of Microsoft employees saying something is a feature then other employees saying you misunderstood. It's like they are purposely "leaking" information to gauge public reaction then change it if it's not a well liked feature. Just tell what it does and doesn't do already and quit backtracking on everything you say.

SO who has seen the recent storm that Microsoft brought upon themselves. Here is an article to go over. As far as my thoughts go I'm afraid I can't support this kind of system.

Hopefully XB1 has that much sofisticated voice regognision that only the person who plays / switches on the console can turn it off.
Otherwise:

However, anyone can play games using your console. "Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games," Microsoft says. "Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you."
Well thank you! What a nice feature! Thank goodness my friends will be able to come over and play without having to pay a fee.
Oh wait, I'm not going to own one, so it doesn't matter. Good luck, Microsoft. You're gonna need it.

I wonder how attitudes will change this week if it turns out Sony is taking the same stance on used games as Microsoft?

Sony has hinted that THEY will not charge a fee, but will allow publishers to do so. So basically it sounds like it's going to be very similar. Companies that want to push their PS4 versions may avoid this, but companies like EA, Capcom, 2K will probably test the waters.
-
Based on recent Sony ads bashing the One, I would say that Sony is gonna try and do the exact opposite of Microsoft.
-
I know isnt it awful, but has anyone heard the rumors microsoft is paying off devs not to show PS4 games at E3 so Microsofts system has a better confrence

Ea will quickly go out of business if they do this. The biggest cash cow for them is the sports titles, and people who trade in and buy the latest version. If people can't trade in the previous season game I doubt they will be so keen to get the newest one unless its significantly better (which it rarely is). They even got rid of the online pass now, so I doubt it would make much sense for them to go down this route.
-

I hadn't heard that. But Microsoft does have a ton more money to throw at marketing then Sony does. You're going to see XBOne everywhere you look. They are going to have constant commercials, NFL athletes will be raving about how much they love it on Twitter, and Ellen DeGeneres will be doing Kinect dances on her show.
-
They do?! Microsoft and Sony are both giants. They can both throw a LOT of money into marketing, and both have and will continue to, I'm sure.
That said, I severely doubt that either is trying to pay off developers. That's like mob mentality right there, not to mention how much potential that has to hurt the developers and publishers in the long run. Sounds like schoolyard rumor to me.
-

This is coming from Michael Pachter, an industry analyst. Think about it, Sony has struggled as a company this last decade, where as Microsoft could dump billions and not even blink.
-
Sony is getting the best marketing they could ask for and it's totally for free. They have a huge chance right here to show off something good in E3 and reel in a lot of disgruntled people into their corner, that is, if their approach to DRM isn't as overblown as Microsoft's. If it's more or less the same many people will be hugely disappointed.
-
One thing I think is funny though is that Microsoft finally put a Blu-ray drive into their console. So wouldn't Sony make a cut from every XBOne console/game sold?
-
Blu-ray isn't Sony's invention per-se. It was invented by a group of companies called the Blu-ray Disc association which comprises of 19 companies including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, Intel, Sony and Sharp. The association gets the money, and that money is dived up between the 19 companies...so if Sony made money on every Xbox One sold, it would be very small.

IT actually sounds very possible if you ask me devs being payed off to not show there games for one day, that wont come out for a year or So! they will have many chances to show there new games, but that one chance to get payed a lump sum, We already know microsoft is suffering a ton of bad press! and have been muting comments, flaging negitive comments and dissabling comments all together on youtube and other such sites, and one of there latest pr stunts while trying explain the DRM seemed to try and push blame on the devs, and publishers! so we know microsoft is not to good to play dirty! its also been confimed that microsoft has highered people to down vote negitive comments, upvote possitive ones, and post positive ones on sites such as blip! so I dont see how its not believable that microsoft would do this!!!
-
it's not a bad move - they're investing a billion dollars into exclusives for this machine noone wants right now, and they will also be paying for multiplats to be advertised only for their platform. even if they're still multiplats. smart if you ask me, games are what'll be the deciding factor in the end. also keeping my fingers crossed sony doesn't squander this head start by announcing any shit that'll be likened to what microsoft is doing.
-
I can't see too many non sequels doing all that great if they go this used game/DRM route. I personally think about Mass Effect. My favorite game series. Ever. However, I sure as hell didn't buy it in 2007 (a 24 year old with no money) without playing it first. Once I rented it, I was hooked and have spent hundreds of dollars on the franchise since. If the only way to play the game was spend $60 outright, i doubt I'd have played it until it went dirt cheap. hence those hundreds of dollars would have gone somewhere else. And I can't be alone, so those hundreds (across thousands of gamers) could very well turn to millions.
-
Ok, I have this hypothesis. What if Microsoft made the Xbox One to fail. They know gamers won't stand for their douche buggery. What if...Microsoft is banking on the Xbox one to fail, just to reintroduce the Xbox 360 as the "Xbox Classic" as a budget system?
I know its crazy, but Coke did it and it worked.

Coke and consoles are totally different. I don't think they would invest all of this money into a new system, marketing for the new system, and ruin their reputation so they can sell more 360s. People aren't going to fall back to 360 because the XboxOne is bad, they're going to run to Sony, Nintendo, and PC. The reason they're doing what they're doing is greed. Always online and DRM gives them massive control over anyone that buys into this platform. They are making sure they get their cut of the pie every time someone wants to play an XboxOne game by controlling trading, resell, and rental.

also sony was involved in the DVD as well. So its no different than the small share they got off dvd players and regular xbox / xbox360

So yesterday I was thinking about this in a way that's more personal to me. My long time girlfriend's brother has Down Syndrome. He is roughly 30 years old and the absolute sweetest guy I've ever known. He loves video games probably more than anything else. Since I've known him he's gone from playing Wii all the time to the 360 a couple years ago. He has a Game Informer subscription and though he can't read loves looking through the ads every month. So he always knows when a new game comes out and points it out to his mom. He plays all sorts of games, but will definitely want anything that involved Batman or James Bond. Even without reading, his ability to figure out games constantly blows my mind. His parents are getting older and not particularly tech savvy. They absolutely do not want him online in any way and I agree with that. They want him to able to pop a game in and play it. Simple. Eventually we'll be in a situation where the new Batman game (or whatever) he sees an ad for will only be available on this next generation of systems. So yesterday I was reading through this thread and thought of him. I talked to my girlfriend and explained all of these thoughts and concerns about the Xbox One. She instantly said, "Well he's not going to have that. No way." I certainly hope that for his sake, the PS4 is what I hope it will be from a standpoint of being the opposite of all of this Xbox One nonsense. I'd be glad to recommend it to his parents if it is and then hopefully everything will be fine. I suppose that this situation is not dissimilar from a parent who has a very young child who wants the new system. Being an "all one one media system" that over-complicates just playing games may just leave these people behind. I am concerned about the long term future of him being able to enjoy what he loves and that's sad.
-
That's a very legit concern, but it's going to have parental controls, I'm SURE. Setting it to zero web access shouldn't be an issue I'd imagine, save for the updates that the system will run, but require zero interaction to perform.
-
You can set 360 so that a profile can't send/receive messages or do voice chat. No reason he can't enjoy multiplayer if you're worried about jerks. I've got a 4 year old who loves gaming and I don't want him associating with the riffraff online.
-
Perhaps. His parents are not going to know how to set any of that up or administer it. I can do that but I'm over there once every couple weeks at best. He doesn't do multiplayer at all. Single player and offline is really the best option for him. It may all turn out to be fine. We'll see.
Also I'm assuming the voice commands are only going to be optional for the system. He has speech issues and that wouldn't work.

I shed a tear when it was announced that Dead Rising 3 was a Xbone exclusive. :'(
I would be excited for DR3, Killer Instinct (not much to go by yet other than the name and little gameplay we saw), and Crimson Dragon (if it wasn't for stupid Kinect) in terms of exclusives for the Xbone from what I saw, I feel asleep half way through their conference.
Ryse looked interesting at first, but ruined it with the QTE kill sequences. Nothing is really exciting me so far.

I cannot fathom the thought of giving a retailer $500 of my dollars to hold onto for 4 or 5, or 6 months. The Idea of 100% pre-paying for something MONTHS in advance, and at that price, is insane to me. I can't believe retailers get away with that.

Neither can I, I'd rather that cash be sitting in my accounts earning interest than theirs. Which is why I picked it up through Amazon, who doesn't charge until your order actually ships.

Good thinking ;)

I think that yesterday's press conferences confirm that Sony will have a huge running start in the next generation of consoles.
Unless Microsoft makes some huge changes they're going to lose all the hardcore gamers. But maybe they're okay with that. Maybe they can sell enough Xbox One units to soccer moms that they just won't care.

Well this sucks. Looks like Killer Instinct is a digital only free-to-play micro-transaction based game. Hopefully by the time i get a XboxOne (this may be a long time) it'll be available on disc in full. :-\
-
I'll add this note, which is a copy/paste of a few posts I made in regards to the XO (what my friends and I call it) on a private forum, that some might find an interesting read, or mindless drivel. I'm not out to defend any particular company (it's not like we are talking about a Sega console here :), we were just trying to make heads or tales of what Microsoft was thinking (and where they may be going, or at least should):
There is no doubt that Sony and Microsoft have switched positions in this next generation (whereas the 360 was advertised strictly as a gaming device at launch, and the PS3 was marketed by Bishop from Aliens as being everything including a BluRay player and worth the premium because of it, with the Playstation boss even commenting that people would get an extra job to pay for it).
Since the PS4 has been confirmed as having no licensing model for games (though, I still assume some sort of DRM where the disc is required to play even after installed, unlike the XO, in order to prevent people from just simply sharing discs), and Microsoft does, they have to do something at the 3rd party cross platform game level to compete, especially with a higher priced console package (having access to your games and saves from anywhere isn't enough, since most people probably play on the same console).
Game prices listed on Amazon aren't final, that's for sure (unless Thief 4 really is going to be $100). I think their best place to compete is on game price, since they have a system in place to guarantee revenue to publishers on second hand sales, whereas the PS4 does not. It would make sense that they could lower their initial price, since they can recoup any difference on subsequent sales of the same disc. If the priced it at $40 instead of $60 ($10 less than PC versions, banking on the fact they can recoup secondary sales), it would be a buy 2 get 1 free sale every day (and in my proposed digital releases, that are all day and date, at $30, that would be a buy 2 get 1 free sale every day). Publishers already have tiered pricing in that PC releases are generally $10 cheaper across the board, so it's not like there isn't a precedent.
For gamers, 5 game sales in, the package cost would balance out (and with the XO, you'd have the camera already to go with it, which is no longer a PS4 pack in).
That, and pull a Steam from time to time of drastically reduced prices and/or package deals on licenses.
Also, I don't see console specific features for 3rd party games being what they can compete on, as that puts the risk on the 3rd party to invest additional R&D to help console manufacturers sell their hardware (unless there is a financial incentive from a console manufacturer to produce exclusive features for their particular SKU), not necessarily their game (console specific features if anything, I don't see as increasing 3rd party sales overall, just changes the distribution).
Lastly, the 360 and PS3's launched before the iPhone even existed, which I see as the device that brought about the "smartphone" gaming market that is a huge market these days. Entirely digital, and your games are tied to your brand, in that, you can't switch between iOS and Android and expect to keep your games. People seem to be okay with that (I'm sure a big factor is cost, mobile games don't run $60 a piece).
I think Microsoft simply tried to stand back and see where things were going, and up and went there, even if the consumer wasn't ready for it yet, or the infrastructure wasn't all there yet (we don't all have access to Google Fiber, yet). I think because of that infrastructure point is why they are even bothering to release discs in the first place at all.
And with the XO, since discs are now just a distribution method for the install, nothing more (since all releases have been confirmed to have day and date digital versions). What Microsoft should do here as well, is pull a Neo Geo. In that, inside every Neo Geo cart is every region of the game, as well as the home and arcade versions. For the Neo Geo, what plays is dependent upon what it's plugged into. So, every developer had to develop support for arcade and home. Some were lazy, in that, once you hit Start, you got an almost text menu on a background to select modes and whatnot for the home version, and the arcade just skipped that screen and when straight in.
Take that same idea and force all developers to at a minimum build demos versions into their games. So that way, if I was to pass a disc to a friend, they could install it, and it would at least play as a demo (for some, a demo is more than enough), and if they liked it, they could buy/license it directly from their XO (or take a trip to a store if they really wanted a case and a backup install disc). So a game plays based upon how it's licensed, akin to the Neo Geo in how it places based upon the hardware it's plugged into. Could also possibly allow devs to piecemeal games, such as a separate license for single player and/or multiplayer. If you could care less about the single player portion of a game, why pay for it? Maybe it's $30 for COD: Ghosts multiplayer, and if I ever want to play the campaign, I can chalk up an extra $30 (or something like that).
-
I absolutely love playing my 360 way, way more than my PS3 this generation and a few months ago assumed it would be the same with the next gen. However, I'm starting to hate everything I hear about XB1 (including the stupid ass name). Sony is doing everything right: price is cheaper, no DRM, used games etc. I have never been a Playstation guy but unless Microsoft does a complete 180 and says "just kidding" I may have to become one.

Well this sucks. Looks like Killer Instinct is a digital only free-to-play micro-transaction based game. Hopefully by the time i get a XboxOne (this may be a long time) it'll be available on disc in full. :-\
I was a bit taken aback by that as well, until I read this:
http://kotaku.com/killer-instinct-on-xbox-one-is-free-for-your-first-cha-512655221
Ken Lobb is involved, who was on the original KI team (did game design, character design, as well as voice work), and the man after which the Klobb in Goldeneye was named after. So, it sounds like it's getting the attention it needs.
Jago was my main back in arcades on KI2 anyways, so I'm glad he's the main character (and the gameplay video I saw, his sword move animation looks nigh identical to KI2).
I'm not too upset about having to pay for additional characters, as they are right, most people just play a few. KI1, I stuck with Orchid, KI2, Jago, MK1 Sub Zero, MK2 Kitana, MK3 Sindel, etc.
I consider them being true to the arcade, if friends want to play, they can throw down 50 cents to play a round and pick whomever they want. Though, in this instance, buy their character and play as many rounds as they want.
I mean, if Capcom gave me a free copy of say, Street Fighter V, and I could fight every opponent, but could only select Akuma/Gouki, I wouldn't complain too much, other than the fact I'd still like to have a box and manual I could scan :D

I cannot fathom the thought of giving a retailer $500 of my dollars to hold onto for 4 or 5, or 6 months. The Idea of 100% pre-paying for something MONTHS in advance, and at that price, is insane to me. I can't believe retailers get away with that.
While I am not 100% about this with the XB1 and PS4, I preorder things from Best Buy all the time. I don't pay a dime/my card isn't charged until the product is in store. Sometimes there is a $5 fee for reserving a game that is refunded, but not when I order online, just in store.

Ah, all the more reason I'm ok with never owning it. Sounds like they're going the iOS game route. I.e. most everything is "free", but ends up costing an arm and a leg if you really want the most from the game via a zillion micro-transactions. I'm sure there will be charges for characters, costumes, levels, extra moves, the ability to pause the game, use of the X button, ability to customize the controller setup, removal of super annoying ads, etc. No thanks.

Your hypothesis may not be that crazy.
-
I just realized something.
The xbox 360 is going to be largely unsupported by developers soon, no new games coming out means used games will be the only way to get games for the system.
Oh
Oh God
The stupidity of Microsock is hurting my brain.
Are Rock band tracks still available for download? I want to get all The Beatles RB DLC.
And does the Xsock One have a internal wi-fi adapter?
I have no live on my Xbox 360 because I do not have one.

I've read somewhere that it does come with a built in wifi, it'd be a stupid move not do do so...well...another stupid move. But then again, the 360 slims already come with built in wifi.
And honestly I believe that MS themselves will drop support for the 360 before the developers do lol. All to push people to the One.

anyone getting some ken kutaragi vibes from don mattrick's statements lately? "people who want backwards compatibility are backwards", "tough shit; get a 360 lol"...
-
I for one will not be affected at all by the limitation of the xbox one.
1 I have a 10mb connection
2 I am a hardware whore so backwards compatibility is moot for me. I'll still have my 360.
3 I don't sell my games.
4 My XBLA account is pretty much online anyway. When I turn on my 360 it connects and that's it.
That said
Screw the Xbox One!
I love physical media. It looks sweet on a shelf. I do love to play my games after support for a console has died. I do buy lots of used games too. <----- Massive deal breaker.
I fixed it. ;D

Same here, but as for #3: Problem is not the selling for me either as I rarely sell, but I do buy used games

I had Wii, PS3 and XBOX 360 and currently I've sold them all forwards. I don't think I ever bought a game for any of those consoles that was brand new. So yeah buying used games is a big deal for me in general.

I think it's funny:
Xbox (Original): Plays its own games
Xbox 360: Plays its games and Xbox (Original), doing a 360 and going back to its roots.
Xbox One: Plays its own games (derp).
Maybe that is why they never called it Xbox 720, because it never looks back =S
-
Haha, the Xbox one's digital games are permanent? The system has a pre-destined date of death. Once those servers are gone, you have a shiny box and a load of installation discs that will never work again.

Yup. The system is basically counting down to becoming a door stopper as soon as you spend $500.

I can understand the hate, though for me, I'm buying one just for Killer Instinct (well, and the Panzer Dragoon game and the new Remedy title, I loved me some Alan Wake). The same way I'm sure many people bought a 360 just for Halo or a PS3 just for Metal Gear.
That may sound stupid to some, but I've got a garage full of arcade cabinets, both Killer Instincts included (actually 2 KI1's, doesn't hurt to have a backup :) If there was any game that could get me to buy a console for it alone, Killer Instinct is one of those few games (Panzer Dragoon just happens to be another).
And articles like this makes it sound even more awesome (in that they've got the right people on the bus making the game):
http://www.polygon.com/e3-2013/2013/6/14/4420310/defending-killer-instinct
They can also go ahead and sign me up for that special edition season pass they mention in the article.
With that said, I'll be the first to agree that if the licensing server ever goes away and the game dies, that would suck. But, the same could be said about anything such as a KI machine's hard drive going toast, or any number of MMORPGs that people have paid monthly fees on getting discontinued. Heck, I still wish AOL had Neverwinter Nights up and running and I didn't lose everything I had invested in that game (Forgotten World is a fun way to reminisce, but just doesn't feel the same not having to pay per hour) :P
If I had to trust any company to keep a licensing server online for years to come, it would be Microsoft. If they ever decide to take it down years from now, one would think they could push out an OS update for "offline" mode, but again, there's no guarantees. Guess at that point, they'll just have forced my hand to spend more time with the kids :D
-
Also, cool to here some of the guys behind the original Weaponlord are working on the game as well, I really enjoyed that game as well (had a parry system, one of the first games I remember with one, weapon based fighting with breakable weapons, and who can forget the "fatality" combo system, similar to what Mortal Kombat: Armageddon used). I remember you could even play it online with the X-Band modem, though, I never had one of those to ever try it out.
The only thing that could make it even better in my mind is if they announced that there are some members of the One Must Fall dev team helping out with the game. I recall burning up so much time on that game on my, bleeding edge at the time, Pentium 75mhz machine (which was an epic Packard Bell bought at a Service Merchandise :)
-
recall reading something about the xbone eula having a clause where they reserved the rights to take it all down eventually and you wouldn't sue them for losing access. but that's prolly just covering their asses, you know how those licenses are.
either way, i'd never dispute someone picking a system for that one title. got my ps2 for ffx and my ps3 for mgs4, even if both those titles turned out to be the worst i've played in their franchises (just my opinion). peace walker was great tho, and i can't help getting hyped again for mgs5.

This is such a massive deterrent for me.
That said, if they DID ever take it down without offering some sort of release from server verification, then they'd be facing a pretty big class action lawsuit, regardless of any ass-covering that they're doing right now (not that there are any winners besides lawyers in such cases).

Yea, this is standard operating procedure for most any company. Here's Sony's version of it for the PS3 EULA:
We give no warranty about the quality, functionality, availability, completeness, accuracy or performance of Sony Entertainment Network or any Services available via Sony Entertainment Network. We do not guarantee Sony Entertainment Network will always be available or error free and we assume no liability for your inability to purchase or use any Services.

Again, I can see how it is for some people. The way I see it, that's Microsoft's decision, and they have to convince their target audience (be it gamers or not) that it's worth buying into, from either a software or service standpoint. They did it for me with a Killer Instinct sequel.
I'd say it's similar, but not necessarily congruent, with something like Ultima Online (is that even around anymore?) or World of Warcraft. They have to convince their target audience that's there's enough value there while they have access to it that if it was to ever go away, they won't pull out the pitchforks and torches.
I'll admit, the idea of everything digital and discs just a distribution method sounds cool, in that if the world was filled of XOs, I could go anywhere, login, and there's all of my stuff (games and saves). Though, I primarily game from home (but my 3DS does go with me on business trips), so that's not a huge factor for me.
-

Though not really related to the topic, I'll answer this. It is. Most of the same production servers still exist but you would hardly recognize the game from its heyday. Many old time UO players like myself still play on free servers that have been emulated and customized to have certain features or replicate certain eras. A few have been around for a while and the one I play on has been going for over 5 years now. Still... it is always understood that it could end at any time.
-
last paragraph there: that's steam today. i log in and play my games at different places all the time. difference is steam runs on an wide open platform - the pc, and there are multiple alternatives when you're shopping for something. there are so many ways of fucking over the customer on closed hardware with that kind of monopoly - planned obsolesence, scrapped backwards compatibility etc. for instance - http://www.gamespot.com/news/xbla-games-wont-carry-over-to-xbox-one-6408732
nyway yeah, it's fun when you grow up and finally learn that these eulas, video & dvd disclaimers, and more recently: no-sue clauses actually don't amount to shit. you can do most of those things, lend, copy etc. and most certainly sue and none of it holds up. did a great job indoctrinating a lot of consumers tho, people online will fight you over the difference between ownership and licenses.
i guess reason we hear about that sketchy clause for xbone is because everyone IS singling them out right now. i'm loving it, but a lot of journos/youtubers are just trying to score some easy points.
-

That's awesome, I had no idea this was still around. I only dabbled in it when it first launched, after coming off of AOL's Neverwinter Nights, which to me was epic, having grown up on the AD&D SSI Goldbox games on my Commodore 64.

How dare they?!? That's it, no Xbone or PS4 for me. :)

Or you could go anywhere, log in, wait an hour or so for your game to download, and then, there's your stuff.
Until internet speeds are 100x the speed they currently are, cloud gaming isnt worth a shit. (and i still want a tangible product)

Yup. Very well written.
I don't want the xone to fail, I want ms to change their tactics.
I have a feeling that things are going to get very messy. This thing will be hacked really quickly, piracy is going to be rife, and there is a danger of it going down down the drain for no other reason than a few stupid decisions regarding drm. Get ready for the shit storm when games start appearing on line. Rather than spending money on development, ms are going to be taking the world and his wife to court.
If a car manufacturer told me I wasn't allowed to sell my car, other than through their own channels, and they would be keeping most of the money from said sale, I'd tell them to stick it. I think the gaming community should be doing the same with this. If we speak out with hardware sales, they will be forced to rethink early on, rather than the inevitable low software sales for some of the smaller developers, putting them out of business. Leaving us with not much more than COD/halo games on the market.
I never resell games, but my collection is something I may wish to sell in the future. Why would I lay down thousands of dollars/pounds/euros for a collection that may have no resale value if/when I decide to get rid of it.
I am torn though, because as a piece of tech kit, it does interest me. It's a powerful little box, and I like how it looks. I guess we all just need to sit tight and see how it pans out.
-
i didn't even care about xbone being demoed on pcs with windows 7 because that's fairly standard procedure, but it's interestng to note that ps4 demos at e3 were actually running on ps4s. http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Xbox-One-Games-E3-Were-Running-Windows-7-With-Nvidia-GTX-Cards-56737.html
because it's saying something about their engineers, along with the facts that the xbone is bigger yet less powerful and apparently having overheating issues. i hear they may need to downclock them too, but it's hard to know for sure with all the schadenfreude in the news right now.
-

They have to convince their target audience that's there's enough value there while they have access to it that if it was to ever go away, they won't pull out the pitchforks and torches.
The difference here being that Ultima, WoW, FFXI/XIV, etc., are online centric games. My complaint is that, barring some kind of update disabling the check-in, every single game released for the system will stop working. I play mostly single player games, barring a random Borderlands 2 event with my two friends, or another random game with those same two friends. However, with Xbox One, in ten, eleven years barring that update, I'm not going to be able to play anything I buy for it, even Arcade mode or 1P VS CPU for that Killer Instinct. And yet, I can load up any old Atari or NES cartridge I want thirty years from now (barring TVs having some kind of super awesome new inputs and all old TVs being destroyed) and play them just fine. It's really hilarious how much technological "progress" Microsoft is making with these decisions.
That said, yes, I do plan on getting one at some point. I'm not concerned about when though, because even the games I want are nothing new, and the downsides heavily outweigh them. Ryse is basically a slower God of War, right down to the QTEs. Titanfall is another FPS, now with jumping (Metroid Prime) and Mechs (Mechwarrior). Killer Instinct is a fighting game that will prolly have some kind of brutal winning sequence (Mortal Kombat). Crimson Dragon is Panzer Dragoon + Lair. Dead Rising 3 is Dead Rising 2 with a mall instead of a city, but at least I don't have to go to a damn bench to make my weapons. Now, also note, I'm not saying PS4 has any spectacular new ideas either; the games are still more or less the same we've been seeing, which makes perfect sense. This is a new generation of consoles, but at the same time, it's still coming out alongside games this generation. Also, pretty much every imaginable combination has been done at this point; the main thing is not "does this game have anything new" but rather "is this game fun and enjoyable?" But the PS4 has all of the features I like (no used restrictions on at least 1st party titles, huge indie support, region free, upgrade-able hard drive, no camera required to watch me (sure, you can cut it off, but how do I know it's REALLY off?), with relatively few downsides, the only two coming to mind being the redesigned controller (I love me some Dual Shocks, and use them on everything possible) and the PS+ requirement for multiplayer, which still is not a major downside considering I've wanted at least one of the many free games they offer monthly. Compared to Xbox Live's Assassin's Creed II and Halo 3 start-up, games I'm sure everybody that has ever wanted to try has bought, owned, beaten, and quite possibly sold by now...

There's only one thing that would tempt me to go for the Xbox One, and that's if Microsoft got exclusive rights to all of Valves games. Hell Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Metal Gear could be all exclusives to the Xbox One, but to be honest, the recent efforts of both Konami and Square Enix, make them no big loss. Valve games bring me back to a time where games were absolutely awesome, new, and quirky. Konami and Square Enix just *CAN'T* bring that to the table anymore.

No Japanese company would go with the Xbox One exclusively as the Xbox has yet to break into the Japanese market, its too big a risk. The only reason Square-Enix started making games for the 360 this gen is because of the Xbox 360's market share in North America and Europe as opposed to the PS3s.

just read they'll still be at tokyo game show in september for some reason.

of course they will. They are still gonna want to promote it.

There are initial reports that MS is flipping on the DRM and used game policy...
It's official:
http://majornelson.com/2013/06/19/your-feedback-matters-update-on-xbox-one/?utm_source=MBC
Though, an interesting concept that was a result of the DRM check-ins was the ability to define a group of 10 "friends/family" that could access your game library, though, only one person could be playing any one specific game at a time (so a friend could be playing my license of Forza, and I could be playing my license of Killer Instinct, all at the same time, though, we both couldn't play my license of Forza at the same time). Basically, a built in way to "borrow/lend" digital copies.
I kind of thought that was cool, as I had planned on picking up an XO, as were a few friends, and we could each pick up the games that interest each of us the most, and simply ensure we were in each other's pool of 10 "family" members (almost reminds me of T-Mobile's old Fav-5 plan), and we'd have one big pool of games. Actually, that was the plan (one person was going to pick up Forza, another Dead Rising 3, and I was going to pick up Crimson Dragon, and of course, Killer Instinct).
I wonder if that now goes away.
-
WOW! :o
Good for them.
-
WOW! :o
Good for them.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm not a fan of the switch, because of this:
These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.
So, my game sharing example in my post above (being able to define a friends/family group of 10 and having an online pool of games to pull from), that my friends and I were excited about and looking forward to now goes away. Downloadable copies can no longer be shared, and disc based games (where in the DRM model, they were simply a means to getting the installation files and for all intensive purposes were downloadable copies), now require the disc, just like the 360 and PS3 (and PS4 I assume). Granted, we could technically still share games by mailing a disc it seems, though, again, I was willing to trade the DRM for the convenience, especially since we are scattered across the country. I mean, if my friend that's a 27 hour drive away just wanted to play some Crimson Dragon for a few hours, he could, and wouldn't have to wait for me to mail him my disc, and for him to mail it back when he was done borrowing it, and for me, the same, if I wanted to play some Forza.
Lame.
Again, I can understand why some people might be excited about this (those that flip their games, and don't have a reliable Internet connection), though, for my circle of friends, where we typically hold on to our games, and we all have broadband connections, the new DRM model offered up some cool game sharing possibilities (open access to your digital game library to your circle of friends) that are now lost.
And again, lame.
-
Win for gamers. :D
Still hesitant to buy BXO, they still might come up with something to screw us over. :-\
-
DRM policies were a damning blow to anyone that collects games. Right now, if you buy a disc based game, you have equity in that game. With DRM, it's inevitable that one day, Microsoft would close down the servers used to activate Xbox One games, making games worthless.
An example of this is Phantasy Star Online for the original Xbox. The game played offline fine but required an Xbox Live account to use. Now that servers are closed for the original Xbox, there's no way to play the game even though it has an offline mode. It's worthless. This is only a good thing. I intended to buy both Xbox One and PS4. However, I'm still putting 95% of my support behind Sony as they did the right thing to begin with.
-
What irks me is the way they made this announcement. They make it sound as if they're concerned for gamers. Bullshit, the only concern they had was with their bottom line. They looked at the disappointing number of presales and started to freak. What happened to "this is a marathon, not a sprint".
The remarks made about the 360 being the right console for deployed military members also pissed me off (I'm active duty myself). As far as I'm concerned they hurt the brand big time.
-
Good news for me. Actually giving me itchy fingers to preorder.
Just can't help thinking that if they can Backtrack on some of these big issues so quickly, what else might change before, or after launch. it's not just the firmware change, but it's more the discussions they must have had with preferred resellers of used games, and contract negotiations that they have dropped so readily. I don't care about the game sharing stuff they've dropped. it is nice to see they actually listened to public opinion, whether that's because of low preorders or not, they listened.
I think I might get in trouble with the other half if I order another console this month, especially as ive already said the next iPad is being bought on launch, ordered an ouya, and preordered a ps4. ;D

WOW!
Or that buy games used, or like to take them to a friend's house without having to go through all the bullshit that is installing them on their machine, or don't want draconian DRM forcing them to install every fucking game onto a hard drive, or don't want to be forced to keep their machines online so that Microsoft can keep tabs on you, or...
I couldn't care less about "sharing" downloaded games. It wasn't an option before, and it doesn't offend me that it still isn't. I'd rather NOT lose existing features/options than gain new ones.

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
Even though it says: An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games, this: After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox Onemight mean that games are still console locked with manditory one-time online check when installing games, which in future might lead to the shit that M$ now tried, as they reserve the right to change unilaterally change the contract.
-
Well, if you don't ever take it online, then they can't actually change anything on your machine.
-
well, this was expected. would've been fun to see them try to actual keep at it, but everyone agreed it was doomed from the start.
still seems sketchy to me. and their "no" towards drm is really forced and insincere so i don't trust them not to bring it back later now that they have all the systems in place. but for what it's worth, the kinect is now the only thing preventing me from picking one of these up somewhere along the line, eventually. and if they're gonna keep caving then removing that would knock the price down in the process...

That it is when you set up your Xbox, not the first time you play each game. It is because of a day one patch that needs to take the 24 hour check off of the system.

Hopefully is not a 2-3 hour long update like they had with the Wii U lol

I hold onto my games as well. I just have more than what was going to be allowed to "lend" games to. I for one am glad the only 10 thing is dead, or dying rather.

I'll admit, I've bought used games for current generation systems from time to time when there was a deal. Though, it's not as if both Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo don't already offer up sales on digital downloads (I picked up the digital download of Little Inferno for my Wii U after it had 2 price drops). Heck, I already own Guardian Heroes on the Saturn and played it to death, but I just bought it again this week because it's only $2 on Xbox Live. Maybe it's simply my age showing, though, I can't recall the last time I took a game to a friend's house. Most of my friends that are still into gaming that I grew up with live all across the country, and again, I'll admit, I've actually mailed out discs before to some of them to borrow. As for installing games, don't current PS3 owners do this already (I don't personally have one, though, I recall reading that don't most games have an install)?
Trust me, these days, Microsoft possibly keeping tabs on you is the least of your worries, when your friend the NSA is already everywhere with gag orders (previously) in place to where even when asked directly, companies like Google, Apple, Yahoo and Microsoft included had to up and bold face lie about if they had handed over or given access to any information.
I couldn't care less about "sharing" downloaded games. It wasn't an option before, and it doesn't offend me that it still isn't. I'd rather NOT lose existing features/options than gain new ones.
Again, I don't doubt I'm in the minority here, though, I was fully prepared to jump headfirst into going all digital for the next console generation, not owning a single disc (probably where most PC gamers already are). Their game sharing plan reminded me of when iTunes 1.0 launched. Everyone in the company I worked at at the time went insane over it, in a fun way. Now, I haven't used iTunes in probably 10 years, so these features may be long gone, but when it launched, your iTunes library doubled as a radio station. Everyone in the company had iTunes installed, and had what they purchased in their iTunes library (and I went the extra mile and took lugged my work PC home to rip every CD in my substantial collection over the course of a weekend) So, when everyone booted up iTunes, you could see everyone else on the network that had their iTunes open, and you could listen to their entire iTunes library across the network. I always left my work computer on, so people could basically pull anything I owned and listen to it while in the office or away from the office (we had our network setup for remote access).
Yea, Apple had DRM all over everything you bought from iTunes, and even at the time, it could only be played on an iPod, but it was an innovative way to look at how to distribute and experience music, and quite a few people ditched their Sony Walkman's for an Apple iPod.
For me, I saw this as being the exact same thing, and that's why I was excited, with all of my friends, with all of us having our always online and available game libraries for lending. In my opinion, Microsoft was attempting to pull an Apple iTunes 1.0-esque business model for games, with Internet sharing and all, and again, Sony was simply promoting business as usual, pumping out discs, the same way they wanted you to stick to CD's to sell you Walkmans, I'm sure they want you to continue buying BluRays, as they do own many of the manufacturing facilities, here in the US and abroad, simply Google "Sony DADC".
Maybe it's agan just me showing my age and being a crotchety old man, though, I'm willing to give up "options" to gain new ones. As the Dead Kennedys put it, give me convenience or give me death :) I mean, my MP3s arguably didn't sound anywhere as nice as my vinyl, though, it's much easier for me to lug around my music collection on my phone than it is to break my back trying to haul record crates around, and I couldn't imagine trying to play a vinyl in my car, that would downright be horrid :D
Though, maybe Microsoft will find a happy medium like the music industry eventually did. These days, many labels throw in a MP3 download code with my vinyl. Heck, the Epitaph label throws in an emailed MP3 download code, along with a CD in a paper sleeve packaged inside the vinyl itself. The movie industry seems to be doing these days as well, throwing in a BluRay, DVD and a UltraViolet download code. So, maybe eventually they'll give those of us that want to go all digital with lending options in place the option of doing so.
Now, what I find humorous at the end of the day when it's all said and done is this:
http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/19/4444450/steam-could-allow-for-game-sharing-between-friends-in-the-future
Basically, Steam looks to be heading down the same game sharing path that the XO was pushing as one of its features. I'll be curious to see what the response is to that when it launches.

At the moment neither do I, nor about PS4.
I'm happy with my WiiU, and should be recieving 10+ new SNES repros soon.

yeah the first link was faulty so I fixed it.
nice looking ones but pretty pointless as underwear.

Only reason I'd buy an Xbox One would be for Killer Instinct.
-
as much as i dont like the Xbox One. at the end of the day i am a gamer i game across all systems. i will wait like a year or so before i pick up the xbox one or if a title i cant get on PC that i want to play

Not having an Xbone is going to hurt when new Halo comes out :(
-
Though I'm a serious Forza fanatic, I will still NOT be picking this lump of fail any time in the near future and most definitely not new. No desire to support Microsoft in any capacity at this point.
-
I've never been a huge Xbox fan, I don't hate it but it really never caught my eye either. I seriously just got a Xbox 360 last year (if that tells you anything) so I think I can wait for the Xbox One when it goes on sale or I can just live without it, either way works :D

Not even for a Rose Colored Gaming special edition dedicated Killer Instinct cabinet? ;)

i'm getting both systems on the 5th because walmart is giving me a 25% discount off of 1 whole purchase.

^^^ Does Amazon charge tax in your state yet? If not, it may be more advantageous to buy them both online, depending on the tax rate in your state/county. Sales tax is 8% in my county, so it would be worth it for me if Amazon didn't charge sales tax here (they do).

I cannot support Microsoft's moronic attempt to thwart the used game market (which helps them far more than it hinders them), their draconian DRM, and their mind bogglingly invasive hardware. Sure, they reeled a lot of that back in after massive backlash from the community, but there's no reason on Earth that they can't re-implement any of that whenever they want, and I can't imagine that they won't. Sony has done a lot of what they were trying to do, just without a big announcement and in little chunks here and there (which somehow makes it more palatable for me).
All that said, I would still love to build something like that. I know I'll end up with it in my collection at some point, it just won't be any time soon, and I sure as hell won't be purchasing a download-only game to build a cabinet around if it's gonna require that I connect to the internet every XX amount of hours. Hopefully Dark Alex will be working hard on the One...

I've been an xbox fan since the xbox one.. uh, I mean the first, original xbox before the 360. I'm 8 years going on 9 on my xbox live account.
I was done with the x one after the always online, no used games announcement. Even though they took it back after the negative backlash, the trust is gone. I don't think I'll be going with a ps4 either. I think its dumb that Sony and Mshaft do not allow you to bring any of your digital content purchases over to the next gen, even though much of the same content will still be available for purchase on the new platforms. One of these days I'll upgrade to a current gen gaming system in the form of a gaming pc. It will be my first pc to play games on, but I look forward to trying the next level.
I'm also baffled by MS marketing for the xbone. What is with all of the super old corporate execs talking about the system in the presentations? Now personally, I'm more concerned with the system specs and games than a presentation or ad, sure, but they should have intelligent, attractive people talking about the system, not corporate dinosaurs. Major Nelson's ok, but the rest stink.
Also, as everyone else has said there's way too much talk about tv and sports. In spite of all of that, it's still going to hurt a little not playing new Halo when it comes out

Ugghhh I know what you mean bro, after gamecube I left nintendo for a while. What made me get the xbox original was halo 2 and what made me go buy a 360 was halo reach and i already know halo 5 will be a ONE exclusive so I will be super sad that I cant play it when it comes out. Hell the only exclusive I can really say im dying to play is Bayonetta 2, so after 2 generations I might be going back to nintendo. With the assassins creed 3 and arkham release on the wii u Im thinking that minus halo Nintendo has got all all the franchises I love all on one platform (hopefully they keep going).
Microsoft has lost all my turned me away they just reminded me that they really only care about profits rather than the gamer (but thats capitalism i guess). The only reason they removed all the restrictions is they knew Sony was riding them by using their mess up to its advantage. So this means that the second microsoft feels they can get away with they are going to bring back restrictions. Maybe ill get a one if it comeswith out the kinect and halo 5 is already out

25% discount is too good to pass up. Saving about $230

I've been watching this, VideoGameAwesome's XBone day 1 experience!
It takes them up to part 6 to get the Kenect working.

I've been thoroughly enjoying mine, though, this is the only game I have (and planned on having short term at least):
I threw it on top of one of my spare KI boards (one must have backups) for scale purposes. I expected a Blu-ray size game case like the rest, but it's massive.
Thus far, my only complaint with the new KI is the clipping. You don't notice it during matches, though, in training mode, if you walk right up to your opponent, instead of overlapping like the original sprite based KI games, the models totally intersect (as in, Sabrewulf's head goes straight through Jago's chest and out his back).
Oh, and I do have a second complaint, and that is, Jago no longer has his slide from KI2. Though, I'll admit, having a character with two ways to completely clear the screen, one that went over low attacks (his standard Wind Kick) and one that went under high attacks and most projectiles (his slide) was a bit unfair (and one of the reasons why Jago was my main in KI2).
Oh, and also, learn from my mistake. Turn off Game Resume if you sunk a ton of time into the free version while you waited on your Pin Ultimate edition to arrive in the mail. Game Resume is awesome in that it throws all games into a suspend state and they instantly resume (and I can go from my XO off to a KI match in about 3 seconds-5 seconds), though, it wouldn't recognize that I had put in my code, since the game wouldn't restart, only resume. I had to turn off Game Resume temporarily and restart my XO so when I launched KI it would actually restart and not just resume and during a restart it rechecks DLC, and then everything was good.
This weekend, with the holidays, family and friends are all piling over here on the 30th for a "next-gen" gathering, and my brother is bringing his PS4, a cousin is bringing his, and a friend is bringing his XO, and I also have my Wii U, so we'll have my XO and my brother's PS4 A/B'd into my receiver, and the other PS4 and XO on the table in our media room hooked up to side by side 24" 1080P monitors (between friends and family, we have copies of most cross platform games to compare for ourselves) and of course, the Wii U is for 4 player Super Mario 3D World.
Long story short, we're all just going to crash and play games and be ignorant of any "console wars", other than to amuse ourselves with our side-by-side Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed 4.
Hopefully everyone else is enjoying whatever "next-gen" system they picked up, if any.

Oh, and in before someone knocks the pins :)
That's a scan I made from an old Nintendo Power.
I actually bought both of those hats back in the day (the hat actually has the awesome "Ultra 64" logo embroidered in the back, which made it doubly awesome), and still have both :D
So, I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff. I even wrote down the address of the Mortal Kombat II ads on the arcade game's attract mode and mailed everything off, and I still have my Mortal Kombat II soundtrack and my Mortal Kombat I and II comics direct from Midway.
I couldn't find my other KI catalog, but I recall that even had a KI denim jacket and a KI leather jacket (at least I'm pretty sure there was a leather jacket). I'm still kicking myself for never picking up the KI Gold soundtrack CD they offered back then to go along with my Killer Cuts (and it seems nigh impossible to find the KI Gold CD these days, or, at least the last time I looked for it a couple of years ago).
-

I know a guy who I think still has the CD. Want me to see if he'd be willing to sell it?
-
I will certainly not knock the KI pins, I'm addicted to Pinny Arcade and almost bought the KI Pin Ultimate edition for the pins alone.
BTW, I still have the Killer Kuts album in original shrink wrap. I've been wanting to rip the album to my PC, but I'm afraid to break it open at the same time.
-
I still have those POGs. :)
