Title: French to English manual translation help wanted
Post by: Arseen on October 30, 2012, 04:43:16 PM
Few days ago I promised to someone that I eventually will have CIB version of PAL Dragon Ball Z: Ultime Menace (Super Botouden 3).
Today is the day I finally won one.
PAL cart in French, box in French, one manual in French and another manual in Spasnish.

That led me to want to try to whip up manual for the game in English, same thing with Dragon Ball Z: la Legende Sayen (Super Botouden 2).
Translation help would be appriciated.

To get things started I have low quality scan of Dragon Ball Z: Ultime Menace manual in French:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?rrd3omp8318i1jk

Dragon Ball Z: la Legende Sayen (Super Botouden 2) manual scans I can do maybe Friday, both French and the Spanish one.

I'll have ago at the French one.  Will be good practice for me, although, not sure how many of the words in a dragon ball manual come into everyday conversation. Lol.  ;)

Edit:  just looked through the attachment, and doesn't look difficult at all.  I'll start translating the text tomorrow, and if you can get me high quality scans I'll put a PDF of the manual together.

Arseen - the "Mode Demonstration" referred to on page 8 - what does it actually do?  I might be missing something, but my understanding of the French description doesn't make sense.

The French sentence is:
Quelque soit la fonction de l'ordinateur, c'est un mode qui permet un combat automatique. Utiliser les commandes I and II pour les choix de parameters.

My translation would be:
Regardless of the computers function, this mode allows automatic battle.  Use controllers I and II to choose the parameters.

This makes no sense to me at all.
A - my translation must be wrong (can anyone with better french help out) and secondly, what do you use the controllers for if it's a Demo Mode?

Other than that it's coming along nicely.  Page 4 was a pig to remove all the text!!!

I'm not home now nor have I played the game yet, but I think it's COM vs COM mode where you just choose the characters and the parameters of the fight and then see how two computer controlled fighters duke it out.

OK - i'll go with that and come up with a description that sounds correct.  Cheers.

Removing the text on page 11 is a pain in the ass!!!

Looks very good.

Maybe the pink parts and sky on Buu image behind the index page need some additional TLC to solidify the colors just a bit.

If you have the pages blanc I can translate the manuasl in to Finnish just for the fuck of it.
Or I can send you the translated text...
I can do the translation after you have translated the manual in to English.

As an Anime nerd I'd like to add my two cents:
P4-5: Sangoku should be Son Goku, Sangohan - Son Gohan, Sangoten - Son Goten, Seignereur Supreme God - Supreme Kai or Kaioshin, Baby D - Babidi or Bobbidi, Majin Bhu - Majin Buu, Supersapien - Super Saiyan,
P9: Attack Force should be Ki

Sorry if it sounds nitpicky...

Not nitpicky at all - i know nothing about DBZ, or this game at all, so if it needs fixing, let me know.

Also - which is more correct....Split Screen or Dual Screen?  The French insists on Dual Screen, but from the pictures it looks like split screen works better.

I'd say split.

I'd go with split screen. Dual screen implies two separate screens while split screen implies one screen split in half.

Yeah i thought split screen - changed on the index, and made the other suggested ammendments - i'll crack on with the 2nd half.

Arseen, I can insert the finninsh for you afterwards if you like, I have all the PSD's so it'll be easy enough to replace the text if you translate it.

OK, if you have the English text ready I can translate it faster than switching between the manual and the wordpad, but I can do it from the manual too.
So if you have the text would you mind PMing or e-mailing it.

Nope, I'm translating it page by page as I go.  I can probably copy/paste the first  15 or so pages into notepad and email it to you if you want to get started

Please do.
That way I can do it at work too.
They keep the computers there so out of date and with bare necesitties as possible to discourage all other than work use. ;D
So no PDF use, but Wordpad works.
And I don't want to takle my laptop there as it's semi-hospital enviroment with older folk who  like to scratch their bottoms but don't remember to wash their hands afterwards, need I say more...

I should probably hold off on doing any more then, as chances are irv's will be better than mine, and no need for 2 English translations.

No toes being stepped on.   I was doing French to English of ultimate menace.  But only just over half way through.  I am sure your photoshop skills are better than mine, so I've stopped to see what yours looks like.
