Title: Mel's request topic
Post by: wingzrow on October 29, 2012, 07:25:16 AM
I have loose carts for all of these sega genesis games, and was wondering if anyone could make some case art for UGC boxes for me. The funny thing is wolf child has every version of it for download, EXCEPT the sega genesis version. The same goes for all the other titles. Think anyone would be up to the challenge?

And while on that note, Genesis carts seem just a bit smaller than the tabs in a universal game case. Any ideas on how to make them fit better?

A shame the source image is so sun faded (mickey's suppose to be wearing GREEN, not blue!) but I've got no right to complain since it's free.

Job looks great, can't wait to see if someone can do the others.

Hey Sega,
I don't suppose you have one for Demolition Man on the Genesis, do ya?  I saw there was one for SegaCD but didn't see one for genesis.

Here's a quick and dirty fix I did for the sunfading on Mikey's Ultimate Challenge (https://www.box.com/s/puc9pjh21hsvwkf355re)

I used a lower-res pic that didn't have the sun fading and some photoshop trickery to copy its coloring over. The result is, admittedly, a bit murky... But it's a start?

@wingzrow
Is the Flintstones game cover you want, for the Genesis, the game by Ocean or TAITO? The Taito game is based on the Hanna Barbara Cartoon Series. The OCEAN game is based on the movie. I can't find high resolution images of the game cover but I can do a custom cover if you'd like. As for Wolfchild, I think I could do a nice cover if I could get a nice scan of the SNES instruction manual. The image used for the SNES would better complement the UGC cover style.

@Zalovar
You're welcome. It's easy to pump out a quick game cover if there's High Resolution source material. There so happen to be a lot on Demolition Man. So I was able to put it together in a few minutes.

The Flintstones game is the Taito Platformer, sorry for the confusion. I've edited the first post to reflect this.

I will say this. About 50% of the time, one can find high resolution box scans online. Half the work of making custom covers is obtaining good scans. To anyone that wants custom box art, find scans, post links and then ask for custom box art. There's a better change of someone doing the work for you. I would say that the average box takes one to two hours to make. Sometimes longer.

Oh wow, that looks amazing.

You should submit all the box art you made in this topic for the main web site, the quality is outstanding.

If I want to make another request, what are some good sites I should be looking up box art on?

There's a few websites that have scans. When requests are made, I usually check a pool about 3 sites but... There really isn't a great place for scans. This is the best site but it doesn't have everything. Sometimes if one surfs google or bing, a nice scan can be found. Sometimes, it's taken me hours to find a good scan but they are out there. I only joined this site about two months ago. However, I've been making custom box art for years... for myself. Since I've joined, I try and do one custom box a day. I look for requests and see which is reasonable.

Why not flintstones too?

It was made by taito, and aside from one BS jump with a leva level, it's a really solid platformer.

Is there a way for you to make it more closely match the original case? I don't know if I'm asking too much. The work you did on this one case alone would take me all day. I understand if you don't feel like doing it.

Here's a picture of what the original case looks like. Taito pretty much used the art you found, and added a bunch of logos. No idea what the back looks like though.

PS: where in the world did you find the original artwork unaltered? I would love to have that.

Example Front of Flintstones case

Retooling or recrafting the original cover is easy if you have a good scan. I think I spent days looking for an image of the cover that I could use. I ended up using part of a Mega Drive Cover, and part of a low resolution image, and lots of ugly tricks to hind pixels. It isn't an unaltered cover. The Megadrive cover has the logo's at the top, the genesis has them at the bottom, It's a fustion of both covers. I did a lot of painstaking photoshop to erase and clean it up.  It amounted to hours of work to get something that semi-acceptable. If I have time, I'll try and make it look like the original cover. I have a poor image of the back.

I found a good scan for the Mega Drive version of Gain Ground. It has completely different artwork from the Domestic release. I can make you a Genesis cover from that.

How does the Revenge of Shinobi on this site differ from the cover you want? It looks like the first print to me.

I'm not the right person to do your horizontal SNES covers. I can give you the raw cover image for Operation Europe (Which was from the SEGA GENESIS box) if you'd like.  :D and maybe someone else could try to make it for you.  A friend of mine has Gain Ground for Genesis. So I'm going to try and get it from him this weekend and scan it.

Oh my god, is that the actual original art? Did you find a scan?

Here's another project, should be easy. I want a case for earthworm jim on sega genesis using this scan. I wanted to use the one on the main site, but it has an ugly circular shaped hair on Jim's teeth (yuck)!

The scan is huge, and I think it's actually better color & contrast wise than the one officially listed on the site. So if all goes well, you could even submit this as the official case for the cover project.

If you can't use it, then just take the original earthworm jim case and find a way to remove the circle on it.

No no no, MUSHA. It's a vertical scrolling arcade shooter.

Wow, do you actually own a copy? A boxed copy of that game is so expensive.

Here's another one I'm not in a hurry to have done.

Streets of Rage (the original) with the japanese artwork, but english back and front.

Which style of Genesis box do you want? Black with grid or Red spine?

Black with grid. I haven't seen the japanese box for Bare Knuckle 2 either, but the american box arts just got progressively worse as they went on.

Found a scan of the Japanese Mischief Makers Box. Can you make a vertical N64 Case out of it? Unfortunately I couldn't find any decent pictures of the back of the japanese box, but I would basically just want the japanese box art front and back, with everything made into english. Same with Landstalker if possible. The american box art was straight out of Pirates of Dark Water.

You mean something like this (this is just low quality mock up), click to download.

Or do you want Black PAL version or the purple JAP version, or something else?

I would actually rather have the entire case be white to match the japanese version as much as possible, so it wouldn't have the red stripes like a normal vertical case does.

So something like these but N64 with screenshots and text on the back from the mock up but with white background (or with some simplistic faint grayscale image):
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=11540.0

Or just the red and green partas replaced with the SNES style N64 parts (leaving the back as is  (red part replaced of course))?

As long as the original image I posted covers the entire front cover, then I would be fine with that.

Like I said, I'm trying to match the japanese case almost one for one here. I just want the japanese made to be english. I feel like if we used any bars at the top or bottom of the cover, we would be stretching out the image.

Kind of like how this case looks. See how the cover doesn't have any bars?

OK, I got it.

But for that we would need higher DPI image otherwise it will look pixelated.

I can try to make one with the image provided but it will probably look bad.

Feel free to do so, my "covers" were just quick mock ups to test will the front be high enough quality when streched.

To make the front good we would need 450-600DPI image in size size of JAP box.
I mean no 600DPI stamp sized image ;D.

If you are satisfied with the quality of the front, rest of the cover can be easily be made perfect as it's anyway going to be custom made.

Don't worry about it,  that second one is actually so well done that I'm happy with it. I'm afraid that without having higher DPI scans of the cover, the game case would look really pixelated if the art I provided covered the entire front of the case.

I take what I can get, thanks guys!

I always liked the original U.S. retail cover for Street of Rage because it prominently features the "1 or 2 players at once" wording.  This game was released during the height of the Genesis vs. SNES console war, and the SNES had recently seen an exclusive port of Final Fight - however, that port allowed only one player at a time.  Sega delivered Streets of Rage with multiplayer capability, and SOR turned out to be the better game - and a true classic of the 16 bit era.

The color dream cartridges have pretty big images on them. I think I can use them to make covers. Can you scan the cartridges at 600 dpi for me? None the less, I will try to get these done. It boils down to finding good scans.

I'm not really a fan of the cover but here's a raw. It's probably printable.

I keep on thinking that there is something that looks off with the spine on the cover.

Awe, that sucks. The game is actually VERY rare, so having a box for it would have been great.

It was a blockbuster rental exclusive, so you couldn't own the game unless you got lucky enough to buy one from blockbuster video.

Actually, I believe that EA offered it through mail order too.  I recently found a complete boxed copy at Savers (for $2), and I noticed that the "rental store exclusive" logo on the insert and on the instruction manual were covered by a "if it's in the game, it's in the game" sticker.  It still says "rental store exclusive" on the cartridge.  My guess is that the mail order copies had the new stickers, because if a person orders it through the mail, then it's not a rental store exclusive.

I've searched Ebay listings, and I don't see a premium for either version.  I've looked for information regarding how many copies of each version were sold, but I can't seem to find that info.  Now that the game is 20 years old, I doubt any new data will surface.  The best condition copies seem to be the mail order ones, because rental stores usually wrote or stuck stickers on the carts, books, and boxes.

Well, it's going to be a lot of work to fix that Madden cover. I'd pulled that scan into photoshop to see if how difficult it would be to correct it and it turned out to be hours worth of work. So, if no one does it, I'll do it on a day I'm bored or  on a day I am without a cover project. However, I have a lot of requests that I want to do first.

Ok, I see. Since Flink was only released in the United States as a SEGA CD game, why would you want a Genesis box? As for the soccer game I don't really do sports games. However, here's a 3 minute job.

Perfect work,the corrections are
eliminate "only for use with pal and french secam mega drive systems" in the back and the "elspa" rating
for the text the english in the back i think is good,if you find the way to fit in the entire back cover ;)
Like i said, very good work also!

I can do that. However, as for the text. I would have to re-type that out. I'm too lazy. So, you can help by typing all that stuff.

I was gonna be nice and type it, but then I got lazy and copied it from GameFaqs (He only wanted the English part right?):

Disaster strikes Imagica Island! Wicked Wainwright has taken over. Only apprentice wizard Flink can save the day. Challenge fearsome bad guys and mix awesome spells in Flink's crazy cauldron as you race to free the Island! With the grooviest graphics and gameplay ever seen on the Genesis, Flink is pure magic!

It even had Mega Drive already changed to Genesis.

If he wants I can type the Finnish part too, maybe the Swedish as well.

Was a case ever made for John Madden Football '93 Championship Edition from that raw that was posted earlier?

I don't do covers for sports games. I passionately hate sports games. I feel that gamers should unite and destroy them... burn them...

No, don't do that!  Make repros from them ;)

I can't find a scan clean enough to make a cover for Grind Stormer. I've been searching. The best I've found is a scan of an ad but there's so much text on it... It would be a hell of a lot of work. And it's really the same story with the Punisher. However, I can come up with something based on the USA box work. So, I'll do the Punisher next week.

I've been exploring making repros. I know I need an eprom programmer and an eprom eraser, correct? Is there a good site with instructions?

EDIT: Disregard. Looks like someone from the topic I linked is going to help out.

MY 3DS cases finally came in from Nintendo. I used one of the Resized DS arts posted here & it works perfectly for gameboy games.

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=11735.0

I'm planning to case my whole collection now this way.

Now i Need 3DS art for these 5 games. Can anyone here help?

Why do people pay so much for storm grinder? I didn't even know it existed before I looked up what the most expensive games for the genesis were on gamepricecharts.

Is it just an absurdly rare collector's piece, or is it actually a really good game?

I'm still looking for a good T2: The Arcade Game cover scan.  I've seen front and back scans, but never with the spine.

Silent Assault from Colour games

Ive been looking for this one awhile.. and waiting for a pro to do it.. When nothing happend, i tried myself. Should be original, but i couldnt find what the spine should look like so thats custom.

If you have any use for it go ahead and use it as is, or make it better..
