If you guys can do it, its one of the better conditioned boxes ive seen. 600dpi scan.

I gave it a try, the pics on the back need replacing due to the quality. Perhaps some touch up..... but what do you guys think?

I like yours! It inspired me to go into a different direction, though:
I found the original production still that the box art is based on, and went with this:

I slapped it together pretty fast, and there is a LOT of touchup I'd need to do - I just wanted to see if the concept appealed to anyone before I went further.
EDIT: I already replaced all the Rambo logos, and cleaned up the edges on the NES logo on the lower right of the front - the link takes you to the full sized, updated version.

Shaggy? Does what either of us did work for you in any way?
Anyone else, chime in - my eyes are getting sore, and I don't trust them. ;)
-
Yours would definitely be a great custom, BGC! Shaggy, do you have a download link for yours? I'd love to check it out up close. It may need a bit of recolouring but it looks pretty good at a glance for the most part. Do you have photoshop or GIMP? You should be able to adjust the contrast a bit to take out some of the greyish tone.

Thanks! I'll likely submit both after some more feedback. I want to get this right.
EDIT: Craaaaaap... this means I might actually have to buy Rambo now.

Haha! I just picked up Rambo about a month ago because I'd been wanting to play it. I think if I sat down and gave it a longer look I might enjoy it somewhat, but it definitely starts off, well, not too good.

Yeah, the buzz around Rambo on NES doesn't seem particularly favourable. I never thought it looked all that bad though -- sort of Zelda II like. I'm also quite fond of the music, which at times is, dare I say, quite good.
-
Sorry to say but I know they won't pass.
Rambo logo texts have fuzzy edges, and it's not solid red.
Back text needs retyping as it too is unsharp,
Nintendo logo has yellow circle around it.
NES text beölow it same thing.
Licenced thingie upper left of back unsharp.
Barcode unsharp.
Legal text right of it ... unsharp.
Quality seal on front... not too bad but still not good enough.
Front image itself out of focus looking
Cover is usable, but not clean enough for the site.
;)

I had a feeling. ;)

Back text, no problem, but the Rambo logo will probably need rebuilt, and that's not in my skill set at the moment.

Yeah, I was going to redo the logo, but the yellow border on the "entertainment system" is by design. I wanted it to pop.

All those things are workable, if I separate them. I'll work at it. :)

According to internets, RAMBO logo's font is Aachen Bold.

BOOM! Thanks!

I have replaced all Rambo logos with fresh, solid text.
All the back text is fresh.
In fact, the only things I haven't replaced are the UPC & copyright text (although I tried to sharpen both).

Is this a better direction?
NOTE: I caught the typos. ;)
EDIT: Updated with better seal.

Ive been working on it a bit and have a new version that still wont pass but looks better. This is the old one. Ill update later
-
Looks much better. :D
-
here's what ive done so far: replaced the rambo name on the side and back. Re-did the (R) logo on the side. Recolored the Rambo logo on the front, the (R) on front and back... and REV-A has been recolored. Cleaned up the akklaim logos.
Im trying to maintain the black boarder and the original nintendo logo.

Ultimately, it needs new pics in better detail for the back. Perhaps a nintendo entertainment system logo and wording re-do for the front. Cant even read the words above entertainment system.
What do you guys think?
-
What's causing the words to become blurry? Same with the RAMBO on the front, it seems fuzzy. I checked the scans and they seem pretty sharp. What did you use to downscale the image from the original scan before putting it into the template?
-
Alright, so I hope you don't mind but I put together a Rambo cover for you. I don't think it'd make the cut on the site but you can certainly use it if you want, and feel free to edit or play around with it if you want to improve on it.

A couple things: On the one you were working with, I notice that the size is 3366x2196, but bear in mind that the cover template and the UGCs are designed for 3366x2100. Second, do you know what might have caused the little white flecks on the scans? They're only on certain parts of the image, like on Rambo's machinegun, in his hair, at the top of the image, and also on the screenshots in the back, but nowhere else. I'm wondering if this was done in a scanner setting/filter. It's bizarre, because the rest of the scan, like the Rambo logo is nice and sharp. I don't have a box for the game, but I'm guessing the picture that was used was probably shoddy and blurry which could be why the scans come out strange (wouldn't surprise me, given Acclaim's reputation for quality ;) ). The screenshots can be redone, but the image on the front is what concerns me. You might want to play around with the scanner settings a bit and see if you can get one without the white flecks.
-
that would more likely be the quality of the box itself. Its pretty good, but it isnt perfect by any means.
I like yours though as it fixes a few of the issues i had in mine.
Discovered the size thing yesterday evening as well. (But as I said... I like yours better as youve managed to preserve the bottom right corner)

Well I'm glad to hear it'll work for you. Regarding the blur, I checked the manual and the cart yesterday and the picture on the front seems to have the same focus issue. The background I can understand being that way since it's meant to be out-of-focus, but even Rambo himself seems that way so I don't think there's much anyone can do even with a scan of a minty box. That's just the way the cover was designed, so maybe blurry actually IS retail (again, this IS an Acclaim game we're talking about here)! ;D

Exactly. Rambo's original box wont stand up to the tests of this site. I say we amend the rules for this cover as its not exactly of the highest quality to begin with. Even the pics on the box look grainy to begin with. Im sure we could replace them via pics of an emulator or something.... but retail is grainy as can be.

Couldn't we rebuild the original cover with the production stills that are out there? it'd be a real pain, but I am sure it's possible - all the pieces exist.

You already did that according to the post you made after i posted the scans. The original production shot is pretty grainy itself. I think our best bet is to take new back screens and call it a day.
Sadly, the quality of the original box art is so poor that it wont pass inspection here.

Definitely a question for one of the admins, but it does bring up a good point. If the source material is bad, even when its at its best, there's really nothing that can be done. My guess is that Acclaim just used a really cheap material for the box instead of what the other companies were using at the time. I'm not sure what games you have in your collection, but if you check out Alien 3 or WWF King of the Ring you'll notice that the quality of the label on the cart is worse that most other games (compare it to, say, one of the Capcom or Konami/Ultra games). It's much lower quality and is very easy to scuff and mar. It's not very glossy and from what I've read they're prone to having the glue on the label bleed through and show up as grey marks on the white parts of the label. These are both LJN games produced while owned by Acclaim, and both of them use the Acclaim-made NES cart shells. So I guess it would stand to reason - cheap, crappy materials on the cart label so cheap, crappy materials used for the box as well.
So, I guess in our case when we're trying to put together a cover for one of their boxes, the old adage holds true; a ventriloquist is truly only as good as his dummy. ;)

I meant rebuilding the retail cover based off of the production still, black borders and all. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
