Hello all,
I mentioned this in another thread, but I thought it would be good to make a new thread to request scans / images of old maps or posters.
I'd like to fix them up a little --- try to get rid of the fold lines, clean them up a little bit - to make nice clean map images. In a way this could be a request for you I suppose. If you have a map / poster / advertisement that you have that you'd like to see a little bit..."nicer" just let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I'm choosing these items because I don't think many people have been working on this, yet there are tons of people working on covers, manuals, etc.
Thanks!

How about this one?

-
I may have a few things I want to use for inlays.
-
rech0rd,
That is a pretty low-res scan, but I'll see what I can do. Do you happen to have the original or was this obtained on the internet?
-
BAM!
(http://www.seymoronion.com/_Work_Area/Ys_Map_Thumbnail.jpg) (http://www.seymoronion.com/_Work_Area/Ys_Map.rar)
Click on the Tumbnail to download a 600 dpi scan that is a RARed Bitmap @ 47.2 MB.
Original Size was roughly the same as a sheet of Letter Size Paper (8.5 x 11 inches).
It's not in the best condition; it definitely needs some work, but man, it'll be so worth it. ;)
Especially if the cleaned up version can be blown up and made into a poster. ;D
If you can clean it up, I'll send ya a big poster of it.
I'll also send one to the first person to post a better scan of it, making it easier for ya to tweak.
-
^^^ I have started working on it --- it is definitely taking a while :)
I assume the darker areas on the side are tape or something that wasn't really part of the original image? Also, there is an area toward the middle left that is much lighter in color - I assume this was not part of the original either (maybe your copy, but shouldn't be like that?)
I doubt we'll get any other scans, and what I've found online is lower resolution, so I'll just continue.

The darker areas on the left and right are from Tape that wasn't part of the original image.
It was Taped to the outside of a folder, that contained a homemade strategy guide with hand-drawn maps.
If I only knew then, what I know now... :'(
You are right about the lighter area; it is not suppose to be there either.
The aged parchment style is suppose to be fairly uniform.
I, and many other Ys Fans, greatly appreciate your efforts. :)
-
^^^ I think I'm about 3/8 done, haha. Not quite halfway there, but more than a third.
Anyway, with making so many modifications/edits, I don't know how it would look printed out in poster format -- depending on the size of the poster, that is. I'm hopeful that it will look pretty good, but I know that blowing up edited images sometimes highlights artifacts. I'm hoping the high resolution will prevent that.
If nothing else, I can guarantee the image itself will be an improvement over what I started with, so we'll just see. :)
-
I recieved Nintendo poster for US version of Lost Vikings 2 today. I'll scan it when I get home.
Poster for Lost Vikings 1 should arrive soon too.
-
^ Awesome! Thanks :)
-
Seymor Onion: I am still working on the YS poster -- it is taking me a really long time, because I have like 50 projects I am working on :) I've had to guess a little bit on the coloring in parts - I know it isn't gonna be perfect, so maybe I could send you a draft and see if it's heading in the right direction or if it looks terrible to you, hehe.

That's cool, there's no hurry. ;)
It doesn't have to perfectly match the original.
If someone who has never seen the original before, looks at your version, and it doesn't look odd to them, then I'd call that Success. 8)

I found a pretty nice scan here. No tape or anything like that. Should be much easier to clean! Ill definetly take you up on that a poster offer! ;)
http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HiRes/Ys_map.jpg
It would make a pretty sweet poster I must say.
-
Well crap, haha. You know how much time I've spent on the last one? hehe.
I think I'll do both. His scan is higher resolution after all - but this will be easy to touch-up.
EDIT: Upon closer inspection, this file is very odd...looks like parts of it have been blurred at an attempt to correct, and parts left pixelated. Or maybe just jpg artifacts from multiple edits, I'm not sure.
I'll see what I can do - and I'll still continue on the original.
-
Ys games are awesome. I wish they would just hurry up with the Vita one....stupid thing is gathering as much dust as my PS3.
Any idea if this Ys map or other maps would be purchasable in a small poster format at a later date? I would love some RPG maps in somewhere around the 20x30" range...for a reasonable price anyway.
-
I can't speak for everyone, but I would prefer for these not to be sold. Maybe just to cover the cost of materials / shipping - but I don't really want to work on this and then have someone sell it for a profit.
-
I didn't mean for profit....that could be taken in a bad way. Just to cover the cost/time/material of the person offering this service. I wouldn't go shouting it from the rooftops that I were printing these for others for the cost ether

Working Designs-Sized Posters cost me around 5 dollars to ship via First Class w/Delivery Confirmation (within the USA) last year, including the cost of the Poster Tube.
I'm not sure how much it will cost to blow up the Ys Map to about that size.
Probably around five to ten dollars, I think.
There are three printing places here in Pearland, Texas.
I'll ask them later today, when they open.
I'm more than happy to sell extra Ys Map Posters, at cost to members of this forum, for anyone who doesn't have easy access to a printing place near their home.
So long as that's ok with sadikyo, as he is the one putting all the work into touching it up.
-
I have no problem with covering materials. I just didn't want to make an image, and have someone go sell it on etsy or somewhere and try to make a bunch of $$ off it, hehe.
Here is a VERY QUICK edit of the one Badchad uploaded (for preview purposes / to get an idea what it might look like / whatever):
https://www.box.com/s/b532bd2f7df83f09d1c0 (https://www.box.com/s/b532bd2f7df83f09d1c0)
I'm still working on the original. If only this new one was scanned at a higher resolution / better quality scan!
-
Are we gonna scan advertisements too? I have for some reason or another been tearing old RPG ads out when I get older magazines
-

If you (or someone) can make nice posters out of them, why not.
-
Yeah -- that's the kind of stuff I've been looking for. I've made some really nice touch-ups of some magazine ads - but unfortunately many of the ones I have aren't the highest resolution scans. So new scans of maps / posters / advertisements / etc. would be awesome. If you / others could submit some good scans of ads, I'd definitely like to work on those as well.
-
I can handle the Sega Master System/CD/Saturn maps that I haven't already scanned. There was only 1 for Master System (Miracle Warriors), 1 for Sega CD (Vay), and 1 for Saturn (Lunacy). I originally mentioned Lunacy here, though, no one has yet mentioned needing/wanting a scan:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6791.msg60136#msg60136
For Saturn, Madden 97 also had a foldout (playbook) in addition to Virtua Fighter (move list). Virtua Fighter is already done, since that was the manual as well:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?f3x3xk4lb94uf#0,2
Every other game that had a map (like Golden Axe Warrior for Master System or Albert Odyssey for Saturn) had the map inside the manual itself. For example:

We end to prefer that things work out that way, but with asshats like Game Case World, there's no way to keep that from happening except for simply not sharing your work :/
-
^Awesome!
I am EXTREMELY interested in Lunacy. That is way up there for me!
Edit: And yeah - I agree with Wiggy - I know it is just gonna happen no matter what we do, but whatever I can to do prevent it, I will. If that means only sharing through PM requests or sharing for a limited time then taking down until requests, then that may just have to do. People are already selling things like NES overworld maps, and other things, all over the place.
As opposed to a game cover, I could see the maps / posters being more attractive to try to sell for $$$, because I think someone would be much more interested in something like the YS poster here, than in a super mario world cover poster.

There's a local place that sells a 25-Pack of 2" x 36" Poster Mailing Tubes for $37.75 ($1.51 each). That includes 8.25% sales tax.
http://www.anchorbox.com/papertube2inch.htm
I've bought those tubes from them before; they're what I shipped my Working Designs Game Posters in, when people bought them from me, last year. I also happen to have 8 (of that size) left over.
Gas money isn't an issue, and I don't require any extra $ for my time, because the Printers, Tube Sellers, and the Post Office trip, are all along my Daily or Weekly route.
I also get a free roll of Packing Tape @ Anchor Box for every $10 I spend there, so that's not an issue. Hmm... What else... Ah, Shipping Labels.
I use a Thermal Shipping Label Printer (no toner) and the labels cost only four cents each.
So Packaging Costs will be no more than $1.55.
Note: If the overall weight is greater than 13 oz, and it ships domestically, I can use a Poster Tube that's provided by the Post Office for Free (https://ecom-prod.usps.com/store/browse/productDetailSingleSku.jsp?productId=P_O_1098M&categoryId=subcatMSS_B_Free); reducing packing costs to a mere 4 cents each.
I just ordered 100 Small and 100 Medium Free USPS Priority Mail Poster Tubes. I should get them within in 8 to 12 Days.
Shipping is Weight and Zone based; I can't calculate those numbers till I find out how much each poster size will weigh. I'd estimate that it will be between 2 to 6 dollars (Domestic).
I'll post the Dimensions, Weights, and Shipping Costs, as soon as I have that info.
I've submitted e-mail requests, for pricing on several poster sizes, to three local printers.
I haven't heard back from them yet.
At the very least, selling em at cost should severely undercut the sales of people who attempt to charge a premium. :P
And, no, I won't do this for Covers for Game or DVD Cases. That right there would be about as fun as knocking down a hornet's nest while wearing only swim trunks. :o
Just Posters that you guys say are ok for me to blow up and sell to ya'll at cost.
Also, I'm not gonna advertise this service on my website, or eBay, or esty, At All.
Although, I may mention it over on the PCEngineFX.com forums, unless you guys don't want me to.
At the very least, I'd like to send the people doing the "Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys" Dub (http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=11697.0) copies of the Ys Map Poster, for free, as my way of thanking them for doing the dub.
If you would rather offer at-cost poster mailing, sadikyo, or want me to stop doing it at any time, just let me know. ;)
-
You can do what you want, really :)
I like your ideas. As long you don't go off and sell the posters for $20 each to a bunch of people, I'm happy. And even then, I can't do anything about it.
You decide what you think is fair. Your time is valuable, after all.

I'm still trying to find a local place, that can make Posters for a reasonable price.
In the meantime, here are 6 Game Ad Scans. They were scanned at 600 dpi. The original dimensions of each Game Ad is about 8.5 x 11 inches.

I have a whole bunch of old gamepro magazines and sega visions magazines that I can look through :)
If anyone knows about games advertised in the late 90's early 2000's that they like I can focus on those ads more...
--edit--
Actually...it may not even be those years...I haven't looked at them since I cancelled my subscription which is an unknown amount of years ago. But either way I'll still go through them :)
-
Previous page had some ads for games from Working Designs so I thought this would be a nice addition.
Albert Odyssey (https://www.box.com/s/3pv6hdticsj1xe8d8qut) for the Sega Saturn (25 mbs)
While flipping through a few magazines I saw this ad and immediately thought of Forte and his collection, lol
Neo Geo Pocket Color (https://www.box.com/s/3yyomz6jlh8xddpvxr3h) (25 mbs)
-
These are all awesome guys! I love this kind of stuff and I'm hoping others do as well!
-
These posters really look nice I commend the hard work in restoring them.
I actually have a few posters that I've collected over the years and in the future I'm going to invest in a poster scanner to preserve them digitally and fix a few that are damaged by the sun over the years.
My question is how would I go about doing that, fixing sun damage in something like Photoshop? Also, how about fold lines, how would one take those out so that when I create a reproduction for myself they won't show up on the print?
-
Superchop, I LOVE ALBERT ODYSSEY! (Have my complete copy thanks to Seymor Onion)
I had that other SNK ad....tossed it out with the rest of the magazine I wasn't using.
I only keep the RPG Ads.

Any tips on what tools to use in Photoshop? Also did you use a regular scanner or a dedicated large format scanner?

I uploaded some Game Adds here:
https://www.box.com/s/tmbm644xdias8ntpeumg
And the Ys Art Book that came with one of the newer PSP games..I tore it apart and scanned it here:
https://www.box.com/s/nlgi1dxzda5xaex7fa87
-
Wow - nice uploads everyone :) And thanks for the YS Art upload ^^^ :) You sacrificed your book and 'took one for the team.' How incredibly selfless of you!!! That was a really cool thing to do.

Uploaded a bunch of new ads.
Video Game Ads Folder (https://www.box.com/s/d5k1xqiabvxecfg4ao89)
So far in the folder there are ads for
(Genesis) Shining Force 2
(Genesis) Eternal Champions (originally a 2 page ad...but first page didn't interest me enough to scan in)
(Genesis) Sonic & Knuckles
(SNES) Final Fantasy 3 (2 page ad)
(PS2) Final Fantasy X
(Saturn) Shining Wisdom
(Saturn) Dragon Force
(Saturn) Albert Odyssey
NeoGeo Pocket Color Ad 1
NeoGeo Pocket Color Ad 2 (water damage :( )
Final Fantasy 3 was one of my favorite ads but unfortunately the magazine it was in had some water damage from a flooded basement :( It doesn't seem too bad to fix but when it comes to photo editing I'm not exactly skillful. If someone can be so kind as to clean it up a bit I'd be grateful :)

actually i got a normal size scanner, i ve just folded the poster then i scanned it in parts. and in photoshop well you have to watch some tutorials online if you practice enough you can do a lot of things in a short time.
-
Question...I have a map/poster that I would love to see restored but what would be the best way to put it up here?
I'll have to scan it in parts since the map is bigger then my scanner bed but does it matter if the colors on some scans don't exactly match other scans?
I'd also post it up in pieces for whoever decides to take the task on so that wouldn't be an issue either right?
-
^^^ The different pieces wouldn't be a problem. If you put something heavy on top of the poster, it will flatten it out for the best possible scan.
What do you mean by different colors for the different scans? Do you mean just slightly off colors because it wasn't scanned all at once? Obviously an entire scan is going to be the best, but if all we can get is a collection of partial scans, it is at least better than nothing. You could always post up what you can and we can see about post-processing.
Also -- make sure that as you scan the different sections that there is a little bit of overlap. What I mean is - let's say the poster is folded into fourths. You could scan each quadrant exactly, but the best thing to do would be to scan, let's say, the upper left quadrant plus a little bit of the other quadrants around the perimeter of it. This will make connecting the pieces much easier / better.
-
Yeah, I scanned then in different sections with a lot of overlap between each.
I used this map a lot when I was playing the game so it's condition isn't exactly the greatest :(
This is just a preview of what it is and of course the actual scan will be in pieces at 600 dpi. I just wanted to play around a bit and put it all together to see how it'd come out.

On the map, the center image is actually the back of the box art. If it's easier I can always scan that in and upload it if it saves a lot of work trying to fix the creases.

I can handle the Sega Master System/CD/Saturn maps that I haven't already scanned. There was only 1 for Master System (Miracle Warriors), 1 for Sega CD (Vay), and 1 for Saturn (Lunacy).
I finished scanning in and assembling the Miracle Warriors map. I did the best I could with my 9"x12" scanner (ended up with 9 separate scans). The final assembled image is 7282x5159.
http://www.mediafire.com/?auhpzbtvuff1j
Before scanning, I checked SMS Power to see if someone already put together a scan. There was of the Japanese version, though, it was fairly low resolution.
Though, from this, I did learn the Japanese version came with a cloth map, whereas the US version was simply a paper map. Also, apparently the Japanese version came with a minature (and NSFW box art):

Just in case you have missed my post in other topic:

Did anyone else catch that? :)

My friend recently donated an enormous, wonderfully cared-for collection of SNES RPGs to me, including a bunch of mint condition maps and posters.
Flattening them out won't harm them, right? They'll refold okay? I'd love to contribute.
Off the top of my head there's... two different Chrono Trigger sheets, Actraiser, Final Fantasy 6, Illusion of Gaia, and more.

Please do scan them as flat as you can, with heavy book on them to keep the super flat, and some extra weight.
Also scan them as straight as possible.
And scan @ 600 DPI with moire removal (aka descreen or derasterization) on, but leave all other filters off, including auto tone correction.
And no the flattening doesn't harm them, the paper "remembers" the folds.
Thank you.
-
Definitely excited about the maps!
And thanks to everyone for contributions thus far!!! I have...well, a HUGE backlog of stuff to work on. I didn't think many people would post :)
So I guess I should change the thread title from "me" to "people, including myself" heh. Even the raw scans are awesome though!! I'll definitely share the ones I've worked on when I can.
Thanks again!

Just got SNES Aaaah! Real Monsters poster today.
I'll scan it tomorrow.
-
I scanned in the map for Lunacy (Sega Saturn). I also went ahead and scanned in the back insert as well while I had it out. It's in the same folder as the manual scan I posted on ratigators.com:

Riiiise from your grave!
